Oxazoline-containing compatibilizers for polyamide/SAN and polyamide/ABS blends
2002
Polyamide (PA) and acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene copolymer (ABS) may appear as a mixture in the recycled plastic stream. The incompatibility of these blends results in a blend with poor mechanical properties. The aim of this work is to partially convert the nitrile groups of the acrylonitrile/styrene copolymer (SAN) into oxazoline groups by reaction with aminoethanol (AE). Such modified SAN (SAN-m) can react with the amine or carboxylic acid end groups of PA, and therefore used as compatibilizers for blends of PA with ABS. SAN-m was found to reduce the SAN-domain size in the PA/SAN-blends. The initial acrylonitrile content of SAN-m had a strong influence on the degree of conversion into o…

Understanding the mechanism of non-polar diels-alder reactions. A comparative elf analysis of concerted and stepwise diradical mechanisms
2010
The electron-reorganization along the concerted and stepwise pathways associated with the non-polar Diels-Alder reaction between cyclopentadiene (Cp, 1) and ethylene (2) has been studied using the topological analysis of the electron localization function (ELF) at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory. ELF results for the concerted mechanism stresses that the electron-reorganization demanded on the diene and ethylene reagents to reach two pseudo-diradical structures is responsible for the high activation energy. A comparative ELF analysis of some relevant points of the non-polar Diels-Alder reaction between Cp and styrene (10) suggests that these concerted mechanisms do not have a pericyclic e…

Theoretical relations for the dependence of the z-average radius of gyration Rz as a function of the mass average molar mass Mw are derived for expanded coils, persistence coils with persistence of direction, persistence coils with persistence of direction and curvature, and for needles, all exhibiting a Schulz-distribution of their molar masses. These relations are applied to experimental data from light scattering of polystyrene in toluene and DNA-Na in aqueous NaCl-solution of 200 mol NaCl per m3 at room temperature. In the case of DNA it becomes evident that the double helix shows no important persistence of curvature and that the experimental data can be described adequately by a persi…
Efecto in vitro de la adición de resinas de intercambio iónico sobre la biodisponibilidad de electrolitos en fórmulas de nutrición enteral artificial
2008
The in vitro effect of the addition of ion exchange resins on the bioavailability of electrolytes in artificial enteral feeding formulas Objective: To determine in vitro free ion concentration in three standard artificial enteral feeding formulas following the addition of ion exchange resins. Method: Three standard types of AEF were chosen: Osmolite HN®, Nutrison Standard® and Isosource Standard®. The ion exchange resins used were: Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate and Calcium Polystyrene Sulfonate. 100 ml of AEF were mixed in a beaker with 1.5 g or 3 g of ion exchange resins for 48 hours at 37oC. Subsequently, the samples were precipitated and the supernatant obtained was used for determining t…
Interdiffusion in blends of polystyrene and polymethylstyrene studied by light scattering after temperature jumps across the phase boundary
1992
Abstract We describe a simple light scattering set-up for measuring interdiffusion coefficients D in polymer blends by generating spinodal decomposition and subsequent dissolution after temperature jumps across the phase boundary. In blends of polystyrene and polymethylstyrene (random copolymer of 60% m-methylstyrene and 40% p-methylstyrene) D values were obtained between 10−11 and 10−15 cm2s−1 at temperatures up to 50 K above the upper critical solution temperature. The results are discussed in relation to tracer diffusion in the same system.
Orientation and Dynamics of ZnO Nanorod Liquid Crystals in Electric Fields.
2010
ZnO nanorod polymer hybrids (i.e., ZnO nanorods coated with a block copolymer with a short anchor block (dopamine) and a longer solubilizing block of polystyrene (PS)) form liquid crystalline (LC) phases if they are dispersed at high concentration e.g., in a PS oligomer matrix. Due to the high mobility of the low T(g)-matrix the nanorod polymer hybrids show a switching behavior under an applied AC electric field. Hence, the orientation of the nanorod mesogens can be changed from planar (parallel to the substrate) to homeotropic (perpendicular) in full analogy to the switching of low molecular liquid crystals in an electric field. Dielectric measurements show that such a switching is mainly …

A Chemical Index Inspired by Biological Plastic Evolution: Valence-Isoelectronic Series of Aromatics
2004
Plastic evolution is a new perspective of the evolutionary process conjugating the effect, on one hand, of the acquired characters and, on the other, of the relationships that emerge among the principle of evolutionary indeterminacy, the principle of morphologic determination, and natural selection. Plastic evolution is applied to design the coordination index Ic. Ic is used to characterize the valence-isoelectronic series of cyclopentadiene, benzene, toluene, and styrene and compared to charge indices for dipole moment. The parameters needed to calculate Ic are minus the standard enthalpy of formation T, molecular surface area S, and molecular weight W. With the exception of the O heteromo…
