A simple technique based on doping polymers within situgenerated silver nanoparticles (Ag/PS films) has been developed. In particular, an antiseptic material has been prepared by dissolving silver 1,5-cyclooctadiene-hexafluoroacetylacetonate in amorphous polystyrene, and the obtained solid solution has been heated for ca. 10 s at a convenient temperature (180°C). Under such conditions the metal precursor decomposes producing silver atoms that diffuse into the polymer and clusterize. Cadmium sulfide/magnetite/polymer multifunctional hybrid nanoparticles are prepared by crystallizing CdS in a controlled manner on the surface of phosphonate-functionalized polystyrene particles with a magnetic core. The supporting polymer magnetoresponsive nanoparticles are produced by a modified miniemulsion polymerization process: a first miniemulsion containing the core monomer (styrene) and a phosphonate-functionalized surface-active monomer is mixed with a second miniemulsion containing magnetite nanoparticles capped with oleic acid and the same surface-active monomer. We investigated the crystallization scenario of highly cross linked polystyrene particles dispersed in the good solvent 2-ethylnaphtalene and their mixtures with non-adsorbing low molecular weight polysterene polymer using time resolved static light scattering. The samples were prepared slightly below the melting volume fraction of the polymer free system. For the polymer free samples, we obtained polycrystalline solids via crystallization scenario known from hard sphere suspensions with little competition of wall crystal formation. We describe the living anionic polymerization of 2-vinylpyridine (2VP) and styrene (S) in continuous flow, comparing two micromixing devices with different mixing principles. The use of a continuous flow setup reduces the experimental effort for living anionic polymerizations significantly, compared to a conventional batch system. By adjusting the ratio of the flow rates of the monomer and initiator solutions a variety of different molecular weights can be rapidly synthesized within several minutes, using one setup. The preparation of LEDs with poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) as emitting material is well established, However, due to the presence of a distribution of conjugated chain lengths in the polymer, systematic investigations of the electroluminescence with polymeric materials are difficult, as far as the optical emission is concerned. The mechanism of polymer permeation through polymer gel membranes

Polymer gels are capable of producing separation effects on polymers. Applications for fractionation and for osmotic measurements are possible. Investigations are reported concerning the separation properties of polystyrene layers grafted onto a supporting cellulose basis. The permeation for pure solvents and the separating molecular limit for different solvents are tested. Their size depends uniquely on the interaction between the grafted polystyrene and the solvent.
Blends from redox active liquid crystal ionomers and amorphous ionomers

Abstract Biphasic blends (mixtures) of liquid crystal ionomers (prepared from ferrocene containing liquid crystal polymers by a redox reaction) and partially sulfonated polystyrene combine the constituent properties in a way, which is dependent on the measuring method. Polarizing microscopy shows homogenous textures similar to the pure liquid crystal polymer. Mechanical measurements show however the elastomeric behaviour of sulfonated polystyrene. The phase separated structure of these blends is proved by differential scanning calorimetry measurements.
Neutron reflectometry studies on the interfacial width between polystyrene and various poly(alkylmethacrylates)

From neutron reflectometry we have obtained the interfacial width (typically 2-8 nm) between incompatible polymers above the glass transition temperatures. The investigated polymer bilayers consist of a deuterated polystyrene top layer and various poly(alkylmethacrylates) as a bottom layer. We obtained interesting effects of the length of the alkyl group on the interfacial width. Using mean-field theory we calculate Flory-Huggins-Stavermann interaction parameters X from the interfacial width a I data. These results are compared with investigations of the interfacial width between deuterated poly(methylmethacrylate) and respective polyalkyl-methacrylates.
One-Step Block Copolymer Synthesis versus Sequential Monomer Addition: A Fundamental Study Reveals That One Methyl Group Makes a Difference

Block copolymers of polyisoprene and polystyrene are key materials for polymer nanostructures as well as for several commercially established thermoplastic elastomers. In a combined experimental and kinetic Monte Carlo simulation study, the direct (i.e., statistical) living anionic copolymerization of a mixture of isoprene (I) and 4-methylstyrene (4MS) in nonpolar media was investigated on a fundamental level. In situ 1H NMR spectroscopy enabled to directly monitor gradient formation during the copolymerization and to determine the nature of the gradient. The functional group distribution along the polymer backbone resulting from the living anionic copolymerization of styrene (S) and para-but-3-enyl styrene (pBuS) was investigated in cyclohexane at room temperature. A variety of copolymers with different comonomer contents x(S) = 0–0.84 have been synthesized with molecular weight dispersities Mw/Mn ≤1.12. All polymers have been characterized in detail by 1H NMR spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography (SEC), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).
