Alagna et al. (2019) suggest new transplantation methods for Posidonia oceanica (Linnaeus) Delile, inspired by its natural recovery process after disturbance due to dredging operations for gas-pipelines. They observe that P. oceanica vegetative fragments naturally settled only on loose calcareous stones deployed to fill the trenches of the gas-pipeline. No recovery was noted on dead matte, sand and large calcarenitic boulders. Following a new pilot restoration project currently ongoing in the same area, we demonstrate that natural recovery also occurs on dead matte. Rising temperature modulates pH niches of fen species

Rising temperatures may endanger fragile ecosystems because their character and key species show different habitat affinities under different climates. This assumption has only been tested in limited geographical scales. In fens, one of the most endangered ecosystems in Europe, broader pH niches have been reported from cold areas and are expected for colder past periods. Niche partitioning amongst northwestern Mediterranean cetaceans using stable isotopes

Abstract Ten species of cetaceans coexist in the Mediterranean Sea, one of the richest seas in biodiversity and endemisms worldwide. The conservation status of Mediterranean cetaceans has been a concern for many years, particularly due to increasing anthropogenic threats such as global warming and overfishing. Abstract Canopy-forming seaweeds of the genus Cystoseira (Fucales, Phaeophyceae) form diverse and productive habitats along temperate rocky coasts of the Mediterranean Sea. Complex responses of global insect pests to climate warming

Although it is well known that insects are sensitive to temperature, how they will be affected by ongoing global warming remains uncertain because these responses are multifaceted and ecologically complex. We reviewed the effects of climate warming on 31 globally important phytophagous (plant‐eating) insect pests to determine whether general trends in their responses to warming were detectable. We included four response categories (range expansion, life history, population dynamics, and trophic interactions) in this assessment. An invasive species, Carassius gibelio, alters the native fish community through trophic niche competition

Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analyses were used to determine isotopic niche width of the invasive fish species Carassius gibelio to help assess the niche overlap and potential impact of this species on the native fish fauna in the Karamenderes River, northwest Turkey. C. gibelio had the highest niche area of the coexisting species. The greatest overlap of isotopic niche was between C. gibelio and Mugil cephalus in the river mouth. The freshwater species displayed similar patterns when taking into consideration their relative abundance and isotopic overlap. Allochthonous carbon is a major regulator to bacterial growth and community composition in subarctic freshwaters

In the subarctic region, climate warming and permafrost thaw are leading to emergence of ponds and to an increase in mobility of catchment carbon. As carbon of terrestrial origin is increasing in subarctic freshwaters the resource pool supporting their microbial communities and metabolism is changing, with consequences to overall aquatic productivity.
