Abstract Current taxonomy of the Etheostoma asprigene species group recognizes four species, two of which ( Etheostoma ditrema Ramsey and Suttkus and Etheostoma nuchale Howell and Caldwell) are restricted to isolated springs and spring-fed stream systems above the Fall Line of the Mobile Basin of Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee. Previous studies of morphological and biochemical variation between disjunct populations of E. ditrema support the presence of multiple independent lineages. Uracrobates (Parauracrobates) truncatus sp. nov. is proposed, based on specimens from soil in Nepal. Parauracrobates subgen. nov. is distinguishable from subgenus Uracrobates by the notogaster truncated posteriorly (versus conical). An identification key to known taxa in the genus Uracrobates is given.

The stigma of 31 taxa of Aylostera (Cactaceae) was studied using environmental scanning electron microscopy. Seven stigma types could be defined, based on the degree of fusion of the stigmatic lobes and, when these are completely separated (types I and II), their orientation. Four types (types IV, V, VI and VII) are present only in Aylostera subg. Mediolobivia, two of which (types IV and VII) are species-specific. Stigma morphology was found to be a good diagnostic character in Aylostera subg. Mediolobivia, allowing in some cases to distinguish species that had been confused previously. Due to the lack of reliable morphological markers, the number, identity, and sequence of the head segments, particularly in the pregnathal region, are still a matter of ongoing debates. The puffs and Balbiani rings are the visible expression of sites of genetic activity (Beerman, 1952). Since Beermann’s original hypothesis, puffing patterns for several species of Diptera have been described. Thus for the genus Drosophila, Ashburner (1967, 1969a and 1969b) has reported the puffing pattern of Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila simulans, Beredens (1965) of Drosophila hydei, and Moriwaki and Ito (1969) of Drosophila ananassae. A peculiar new Orthotrichum species (Orthotrichaceae, Bryopsida) from central Argentina

A new epiphytic Orthotrichum species (Orthotrichum spiculatum F. Lara, Garilleti & Mazimpaka sp. nov.) is described from the sierra of Cordoba (Argentina). The new species has most of the characteristics of subgenus Pulchella (Schimp.) Vitt, but it is unique because of having eight exostome teeth pairs and 16 broad, strongly papillose endostome segments. Phenobarbital Induction of UDP-glucosyltransferase Activity in Drosophila melanogaster Meigen

The inducibility of UDP-glucosyltransferase activities towards the exogenous substrates 1-naphthol and 2-naphthol and the endogenous metabolite xanthurenic acid was demonstrated in Drosophila melanogaster Meigen larvae and adults using phenobarbital as an inducer. In adults, a 3.5-fold increase of glucosyltransferase activity toward xanthurenic acid and a 2.0-fold increase of the activity toward exogenous substrates (1-naphthol and 2-naphthol) was found.
