“Ehrlich färbt am längsten”. Sichtbarmachung bei Paul Ehrlich

2013

"Staining is the Best Policy". Visualization in the work of Paul Ehrlich. For nearly all of his life, the biomedical scientist Paul Ehrlich dedicated himself to work on dyes and staining at the interface between so-called color-chemistry and histopathology. The article begins by sketching out the field of histopathology at the junction of pathological anatomy, microtechniques, and the development of chemical dyes in the early 1870s when Ehrlich began his training as a medical student. The article explores Ehrlich's work staining first tissue and blood, and then pathogens and vital staining in the 1880s. In the late 1880s and 1890s, Ehrlich experimented with dyes as therapeutic agents. Stain…

Do Minimal Interventions Increase Participation Rates in Voluntary Online Training at High School?

2020

In preparation for graduating from high school, students face the challenge of having to learn the subject matter of several school years with little guidance. The ability to self-regulate learning is conducive to this. Research has shown that students’ self-regulated learning can be successfully promoted through training. However, when such training is provided voluntarily, not all students participate and dropout rates tend to be high. Minimal interventions on utility value and implementation intention are promising approaches to increase the use of voluntary training. This study investigates whether short interventions can increase the participation in voluntary self-regulated learning …

Self-generated Drawing: A Help or Hindrance to Learning from Animation?

2017

The considerable potential of animations to aid learning about dynamic systems too often remains unfulfilled when the targeted subject matter is complex and unfamiliar. Various approaches designed to support learning from animation in such cases have met with limited success. Recent studies on learning from demanding texts indicate that educational outcomes can be improved if learners are required to self-generate drawings during their study of a text. This improvement has been attributed to the role of drawing in fostering deeper learner processing of the presented information and superior self-regulation as learning proceeds. It is possible that learner self-generation of drawings during …

Towards Personalization of Peer Review in Learning Programming

2017

Peer review is one of the effective processes for sharing knowledge and improving overall learning performance. This became more popular by the use of ICT. However, it is challenging to implement peer review in learning programming languages due to the complexity of the subject matter. A group of peer reviewers may have different overall performance but similar weaknesses on a given aspect of the programming tasks. Hence, they may not be able to help each other to address individual needs. In this paper, we present a personalized approach to peer review with consideration to criteria based assessment and individual performance on specific programming tasks. This is achieved using a novel pe…

Wizyta duszpasterska zwana kolędą w nowej perspektywie pastoralno-homiletycznej.

2012

Taking for granted that Marx’s economic theory enjoys a scientific status and, furthermore, that it installed a real Copernican revolution in sociology, the present paper explores the possibility of deriving a system of law deserving the name of “scientific” in so far as it would be in keeping with the theses of the latter scientific theory. In this context, the paper argues against a claim recently sustained by Fernandez Liria and Alegre Zahonero, for whom a system of right compatible with Marx’s theory would be compatible, too, with the classic juridical formulations conceived during the Enlightenment. The main reason why this paper testifies against such compatibility is that the enlight…

Objectivization of the electrical discharge measurement results taken by the acoustic emission method

2006

The subject matter of this paper refers to the improvement of the acoustic emission method (AE) in its application for diagnostics of insulation systems of power appliances whereas the detailed subject matter is connected with determining the possibilities and indicating the range of using statistical and digital methods of signal processing for the evaluation of the AE pulses generated by partial discharges (PDs), which can occur in paper-oil insulation of power transformers.

An overview of the service industries' future (priorities: linking past and future)

2011

The innovative future of service industries in detail from any viewpoint or theoretical perspective forms the central subject matter for this special issue. One of the sectors considered to be relevant for favouring the growth of the international economy is the services sector. The relative ease with which services can be implanted in certain activities with notably less capital than that required for most industries, as well as the direct and indirect effects it generates on the job market, are factors that have brought about belief and reliance on this sector to provide a means of growth and a way of recovering from any international economic crisis, and in the future may prove to play a…
