Grain Composition and Functional Ingredients of Barley Varieties Created in Latvia

Abstract Cereals, including barley, have been recognised as functional foods that provide beneficial effect on the health of the consumer and decrease the risk of various diseases. The aim of investigation was to determine the grain composition of barley varieties and perspective breeding lines bred in Latvia and to evaluate its functional ingredients. The results of analysis showed that protein content among varieties ranged from 106.6-146.8 g·kg-1, total dietary fibre 187.4-208.2 g·kg-1, β-glucans 42.8 g-49.4 g·kg-1, and amount of α-tocopherol 6.03-8.93 mg·kg-1. Stepmothers’ constructions and negotiations of belonging

Applying a narrative approach and symbolic interactionist frame of reference, this study examines how Finnish stepmothers in their written narratives construct and negotiate their belonging. Belonging is a relevant concept in this study since it focuses on social interaction and intersubjectivity, and their emotional content. Three types of belonging were identified: (a) restricted belonging, (b) dyadic stepmother–stepchild belonging and (c) the spousal relationship as a focal dyad of belonging. As archaeologists, we have to deal with the dead, and as David Clarke once said, we like to keep our archaeology dead. From an epistemological perspective, alienation from the dead seems almost inevitable; otherwise, we would only project today’s conditions onto the past. Therefore, the past must be, and must remain, a foreign country. These alienating processes have ethical implications, however, especially when it comes to the study of human remains. Voldemar Langenfeld's list of Malus Mill. herbaria

Veicot ābeļu ģints (Malus Mill.) sistemātiku, tās morfoloģijas, evolūcijas un filoģenēzes pētniecību, profesors Voldemārs Langenfelds (1923 – 2007) ir izveidojis vairāk kā 600 lapu lielu ābeļu herbāriju. Herbāriji ievākti laikā no 1956. līdz 1969. gadam Latvijā un ārpus tās robežām. 1990. gadu beigās zinātnieks šo herbāriju nodeva Latvijas Universitātes Muzejam un tie glabājas Botānikas un mikoloģijas kolekcijās. Lielākā daļa (407) ir iekļauti kolekcijā Herbarium Latvicum (RIG II), pārējie – Herbarium Generale, 29 herbāriji atrodas ārpus minētajām kolekcijām. Šajos sarakstos sniegti dati par visiem V. Langenfelda ābeļu herbārijiem, kas glabājas LU Muzejā.
