Bimodal sill emplacement from an inhomogeneous source: a case study of olivine-gabbronorite and diabase with Ni-Cu sulphides in a sill within Permian…

2009

A small outcrop of mafic rocks, located between the Permian-Triassic sediments of the Cenozoic tectonic unit of the Maghrebian chain in Western Sicily, is an olistolith made up of olivine gabbronorite within diabase. Textures, microprobe analyses, and major and trace element geochemistry confirm the co-genetic nature of the various rocks: the gabbronorite is the result of olivine and orthopyroxene accumulation, with interstitial clinopyroxene and plagioclase, in a framework of a gabbrodioritic diabase. At least two stages of magmatic crystallisation during ascent in the continental crust are described, on the basis of reconstructed conditions of T, P and XH2O. The primitive magma was recons…

Sulphur-gas concentrations in volcanic and geothermal areas in Italy and Greece: Characterising potential human exposures and risks

2013

Abstract Passive samplers were used to measure the atmospheric concentrations of SO 2 naturally emitted at three volcanoes in Italy (Etna, Vulcano and Stromboli) and of H 2 S naturally emitted at three volcanic/geothermal areas in Greece (Milos, Santorini and Nisyros). The measured concentrations and dispersion patterns varied with the strength of the source (open conduits or fumaroles), the meteorological conditions and the area topography. At Etna, Vulcano and Stromboli, SO 2 concentrations reach values that are dangerous to people affected by bronchial asthma or lung diseases (> 1000 μg m − 3 ). H 2 S values measured at Nisyros also exceed the limit considered safe for the same group of …

New Insight on Archaeological Metal Finds, Nails and Lead Sheathings of the Punic Ship from Battle of the Egadi Islands

2023

The wreck of the Punic ship exhibited at the Archaeological Park of Lilybaeum (Marsala, Italy) is a unique example in the world. In this paper, the investigation of some metal finds (30 nails and 3 fragments of sheathings) belonging to the wreck of the Punic ship is reported. Portable X-ray fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy allowed us to identify the elements and compounds constituting them and make some deductions about their composition. X-ray diffractometry, polarised optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy of the collected micro-samples allowed us to explain the degradation that occurred in the underwater environment.

Water-borne polymeric nanoparticles for glutathione-mediated intracellular delivery of anticancer drugs

2013

A new family of water-borne, biocompatible and carboxyl- functionalized nanogels was developed for glutathione- mediated delivery of anticancer drugs. Poly(N-vinyl- pyrrolidone)-co-acrylic acid nanogels were generated by e- beam irradiation of aqueous solutions of a crosslinkable polymer, using industrial-type linear accelerators and set- ups. Nanogels physico-chemical properties and colloidal stability, in a wide pH range, were investigated. In vitro cell studies proved that the nanogels are fully biocompatible and able to quantitatively bypass cellular membrane. An anticancer drug, doxorubicin (DOX), was linked to the carboxyl groups of NGs through a spacer containing a disulphide cleavab…

MOBILITY OF MERCURY IN THE VOLCANIC/GEOTHERMAL AREA OF NISYROS (GREECE)

2017
