Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw associated with bisphosphonates and denosumab in osteoporosis

2016

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical characteristics and evolution of our series of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) associated with denosumab in osteoporotic patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present 10 new cases of MRONJ in patients receiving denosumab for osteoporosis. We describe the mean doses of denosumab, previous bisphosphonate intake, and the clinical characteristics associated with the osteonecrosis, such as local contributing factors, symptoms, and evolution after treatment. RESULTS: The mean number of denosumab doses was 3.4 2.2. In 90% of patients, there was a prior history of oral bisphosphonate intake, with a mean duration of 46.78 25.11 months. The most c…

BRONJ in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: A multicenter case series

2016

Objective: Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is a potentially severe adverse effect of various medications (bisphosphonates, anti-resorptive, and anti-angiogenic drugs). ONJ pathogenesis is still unclear although some risk factors have been recognized. Of these, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been hypothesized as a potential risk factor for developing ONJ. This observational study will describe a multicenter case series of patients affected with RA and ONJ, and it will attempt to evaluate the association between features of ONJ and pharmacological, systemic, and site variables. Methods: Demographic, pharmacological, and clinical data from 18 RA patients with ONJ were collected and registered fr…

Development and evaluation of occlusive systems employing polyvinyl alcohol for transdermal delivery of sumatriptan succinate

2010

The aim of the present study was to develop a sumatriptan succinate transdermal system for applying migraine treatments efficiently and easily. For this system polyvinyl alcohol was employed as a matrix and Azone((R)) was added as a permeability enhancer. The physical characteristics, mechanical properties, and in vivo bioadhesion of the systems were evaluated, as was in vitro permeation across porcine skin. A uniform distribution of the drug in the matrix was observed, and moisture uptake values were constant. With regard to mechanical parameters, occlusive layer inclusion made the system more resistant, and no significant differences were detected with respect to other systems. Although A…

Nesteroīdo pretiekaisuma līdzekļu lietošanas paradumi sabiedrībā

2022

Bakalaura darba tēma ir “Nesteroīdo pretiekaisuma līdzekļu lietošanas paradumi sabiedrībā’’. Aktualitāti nosaka tas, ka nesteroīdie pretiekaisuma līdzekļi ir vieni no vispieprasītākajiem medikamentiem. Bieži vien to lietošana notiek bez ārsta konsultācijas, jo medikamenti ir viegli pieejami pārdošanā. Neracionāla medikamentu lietošana var nodarīt neatgriezenisku kaitējumu veselībai. Pētniecības darba mērķis ir noskaidrot nesteroīdo pretiekaisuma līdzekļu lietošanas paradumus sabiedrībā. Izvirzītā hipotēze - sabiedrība pakļauta neracionālai nesteroīdo pretiekaisuma līdzekļu lietošanai, sakarā ar zināšanu trūkumu. Bakalaura darbs sastāv no 4 nodaļām un 8 apakšnodaļām. Darba teorētiskās daļas …

Seawater carbonate chemistry and nest guarding behaviour of a temperate wrasse

2021

Organisms may respond to changing environmental conditions by adjusting their behaviour (i.e., behavioural plasticity). Ocean acidification (OA), resulting from anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), is predicted to impair sensory function and behaviour of fish. However, reproductive behaviours, and parental care in particular, and their role in mediating responses to OA are presently overlooked. Here, we assessed whether the nesting male ocellated wrasse Symphodus ocellatus from sites with different CO2 concentrations showed different behaviours during their breeding season. We also investigated potential re-allocation of the time-budget towards different behavioural activities b…

Seawater carbonate chemistry and shell mineralogy, microstructure, and mechanical strength of four Mediterranean gastropod species near a CO2 seep

2017

Marine CO2 seeps allow the study of the long-term effects of elevated pCO2 (ocean acidification) on marine invertebrate biomineralization. We investigated the effects of ocean acidification on shell composition and structure in four ecologically important species of Mediterranean gastropods (two limpets, a top-shell snail, and a whelk). Individuals were sampled from three sites near a volcanic CO2 seep off Vulcano Island, Italy. The three sites represented ambient (8.15 pH), moderate (8.03 pH) and low (7.73 pH) seawater mean pH. Shell mineralogy, microstructure, and mechanical strength were examined in all four species. We found that the calcite/aragonite ratio could vary and increased sign…

Physiological advantages of dwarfing in surviving extinctions in high-CO2 oceans

2015

Excessive CO2 in the present-day ocean-atmosphere system is causing ocean acidification, and is likely to cause a severe biodiversity decline in the future, mirroring effects in many past mass extinctions. Fossil records demonstrate that organisms surviving such events were often smaller than those before, a phenomenon called the Lilliput effect. Here, we show that two gastropod species adapted to acidified seawater at shallow-water CO2 seeps were smaller than those found in normal pH conditions and had higher mass-specific energy consumption but significantly lower whole-animal metabolic energy demand. These physiological changes allowed the animals to maintain calcification and to partial…
