Deposition of binder-free oxygen-vacancies NiCo2O4 based films with hollow microspheres via solution precursor thermal spray for supercapacitors
2019
Abstract Hollow micro-/nanostructures and oxygen vacancies are highly desirable for supercapacitors due to high active surface area and outstanding electrochemical properties. In order to benefiting from the both effect, binder-free oxygen-vacancies NiCo2O4 based films with hollow microspheres were pioneering directly deposited via one kind thermal spray technology, named solution precursor thermal spray (SPTS) process. To our best knowledge, the rapid one-step SPTS route was firstly employed to synthesize and deposit NiCo2O4 films for supercapacitor applications. The CV data clearly demonstrated that the specific capacitances of more oxygen-deficient NiCo2O4 electrodes with hollow microsph…
Ruthenium Oxide Nanotubes Via Template Electrosynthesis
2011
Ruthenium oxide nanotubes were fabricated by a single-step galvanostatic deposition using porous anodic alumina membrane as template. For the electrodeposition process, we used a electrochemical cell specifically designed in order to employ only 0.5 ml of 0.02 M RuCl3•xH2O solution. The deposition from a very small volume was specifically addressed owing to the high cost of ruthenium compounds, which could be of some relevance from an applicative point of view. Several techniques were used to characterize the samples prior to and after thermal treatment, which was carried out at different temperatures in order to study the crystallization process of the deposit. Raman spectroscopy of as-dep…
Heat-to-current conversion of low-grade heat from a thermocapacitive cycle by supercapacitors
2015
Thermal energy is abundantly available, and especially low-grade heat is often wasted in industrial processes as a by-product. Tapping into this vast energy reservoir with cost-attractive technologies may become a key element for the transition to an energy-sustainable economy and society. We propose a novel heat-to-current converter which is based on the temperature dependence of the cell voltage of charged supercapacitors. Using a commercially available supercapacitor, we observed a thermal cell-voltage rise of around 0.6 mV K-1 over a temperature window of 0 degrees C to 65 degrees C. Within our theoretical model, this can be used to operate a Stirling-like charge-voltage cycle whose eff…
Analysis and design of bi-directional DC-DC converters for ultracapacitors management in EVs
2018
The on-board energy-storage system of an electric vehicle (EV) should be able to collect large amounts of energy and to deal with fast load variations. The use of hybrid power sources as storage devices is an attractive solution, aiming at maximizing both energy and power density. The battery/ultracapacitors (UCs) combination promises to provide significant benefits. An accurate design of bi-directional converters, capable of proplery managing the charge/discharge of the UCs from/to a voltage bus, is essential. In this paper, a bi-directional DC-DC converter connected to a bank of UCs is described and the simulation results are given as well. The designed converter is a buck-boost type, abl…
Modelling, simulation and characterization of a supercapacitor
2020
In the last decade, the issue of air pollution or the reduction of CO2 emissions has become of extreme interest both for civil society and then for the industrial and scientific research world. For this reason, the scientific research on automotive is called to answer with increasingly innovative solutions. One of the principal subjects are the storage and the utilization of the electric energy for electrical and hybrid vehicles. Nowadays, supercapacitors are getting more and more attention because of their characteristics that allow them to be a bridge between electrolytic capacitors and batteries in several application such as bust-mode energy delivery, regenerative breaks and so on. The …
Oxygen-deficient Co3O4 submicron porous sphere films as highly active supsercapacitor electrodes
2021
Abstract Herein, we report Co3O4 films with different content of oxygen vacancies and shapes of particles for supercapacitor electrodes. Under the similar area ratio of OII peak in the XPS spectrum of oxygen elements, the specific capacitance of electrode films with hollow spongy-like particles (963 F/g under a scan rate of 5 mV/s) is 1.6 times higher than that of the electrodes with solid irregular particles (596 F/g), indicating the effect of particle shapes on electrochemical properties. The films composed of submicron porous spheres and containing highest content of oxygen vacancies exhibited the specific capacitances as high as 1700 F/g under the scan rate of 5 mV/s. By contrast, after…
A Feasibility Analysis of an Electric KERS for Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles
2019
In this work, the authors evaluate the energetic and economic advantages connected to the implementation of an electric Kinetic Energy Recovery System (e-KERS) on an internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV). The e-KERS proposed is based on the use of a supercapacitor (SC) as energy storage element, a brushless motor generator unit (MGU) for the conversion of the vehicle kinetic energy into electric energy (and vice versa), and a power converter properly designed to manage the power transfer between SC and MGU. The low complexity of the system proposed, the moderate volume and weight of the components selected for its assembly, together with their immediate availability on the market, make …
A six legs buck-boost interleaved converter for KERS application
2020
This paper addresses the design of a bi-directional DC/DC power converter to interface a supercapacitor bank and a motor-generator unit. The design is based on an interleaved six legs topology in which the current is shared among six inductors to minimize their weight and cost, allowing, besides, a low switching frequency to lessen switching losses. The converter is conceived to be employed in an electric Kinetic Energy Recovery System for Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles. The system makes use of a supercapacitor as a storage system, and a motorgenerator unit connected to the drive shaft for vehicle acceleration and braking. The system uses available commercial devices, thus obtaining a …
Boosting the supercapacitive behavior of CoAl-layered double hydroxides via tuning the metal composition and interlayer space
2020
Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are promising supercapacitor materials due to their wide chemical versatility, earth abundant metals and high specific capacitances. Many parameters influencing the supercapacitive performance have been studied such as the chemical composition, the synthetic approaches, and the interlayer anion. However, no systematic studies about the effect of the basal space have been carried out. Here, two-dimensional (2D) CoAl-LDHs were synthesized through anion exchange reactions using surfactant molecules in order to increase the interlayer space (ranging from 7.5 to 32.0 Å). These compounds exhibit similar size and dimensions but different basal space to explore excl…
Ionic Liquid-Based Electrolytes for Supercapacitor and Supercapattery
2019
There is a strong desire to replace or complement aqueous and organic electrolytes by ionic liquids (ILs) in electrochemical energy storage (EES) devices to achieve high operating voltages and hence high energy capacity. ILs are regarded as the inherent and competitive electrolytes since they were introduced to the electrochemical research community because they can overcome many disadvantages of the conventional aqueous and organic electrolytes, such as narrow potential windows, volatility, and flammability. This paper reviews critically the recent literatures of IL-based electrolytes used in supercapacitor, supercapattery, and micro-supercapacitor. Supercapattery is a generic term for var…
