Novel spectra in the supercontinuum generation with applications in the biodiversity conservation

2014

This paper presents some spectra of the supercontinuum generation obtained with microstructured fibers and tapered fiber devices excited with quasi-continuous pumps. These spectra are part of a group (collection) of multiple configurations that were studied and evaluated by our working group, and that could be very useful in LIDAR as well as bio-imaging applications. This work is limited to present some spectra that could be useful in applications of biodiversity conservation. The prototypes for specific applications will be evaluated in future research.

Towards a Thermodynamic Description of Supercontinuum Generation

2009

Based on the kinetic wave theory, we describe continuous-wave supercontinuum generation as a thermalization process, i.e., an irreversible evolution of the optical field towards a state of maximum nonequilibrium entropy.

Visible Light Generation and Its Influence to Supercontinuum in As2S3 Microstructured Fiber

2011

We demonstrate visible light generation in As 2 S 3 microstructured fiber for the first time. It limits the spectral range of supercontinuum. The visible light generation can be avoided by designing the fiber for the single-mode operation.

Nonlinear effects above 2 µm in chalcogenide suspended core microstructured optical fibers: Modeling and experiments

2011

We present our latest results on the linear and nonlinear modeling, and on the fabrication of chalcogenide suspended core microstructured optical fibers for mid-infrared generation. We focus on an AsSe glass composition. We have used a thulium-doped fiber laser to pump our fibers around 2 µm. In order to enhance further the nonlinearities and to manage the chromatic dispersion for supercontinuum application, we have tapered some of our microstructured optical fibers.

Solc filters in a reflective geometry

2017

We present the realization of a bulk optics birefringent Solc filter in a reflective geometry. This geometry reduces by half the number of required retarders, ensures the same spectral retardance function in pairs of retarders, and helps to make more compact filters. The key element is a quarter-wave Fresnel rhomb located in between the set of retarders and a mirror. Two cases are considered: the first Solc filter uses multiple-order quartz retarders, and the second one uses two liquid-crystal retarders. The latter has the advantage of being tunable via an applied voltage. Experimental results show how to filter the spectral content of a supercontinuum laser.

Spectral anomalies in supercontinuum focused waves

2006

The diffraction-induced spectral anomalies in the focal plane of an apertured spherical wave with supercontinuum flat-top power spectrum are investigated. Coherent broadband radiation (also incoherent white light) demonstrates a strong blue shift in the vicinity of the optical axis, and discrete spectral gaps with overall red shift arise out of this central region. Unlike narrow-band light, the spectral switch effect fades away with ultra-broad spectra.

Spatiotemporal Complexity in Step-Index Multimode Fibers

2016

We study supercontinuum generation in step-index fibers with a varying number of modes. We observe new spatiotemporal effects, including evidence of multimode spectral incoherent solitons, and a universal transition to spatiotemporal complexity.

Supercontinuum spectral control

2009

Supercontinuum (SC) generation in photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) is a cutting-edge phenomenon extensively studied in recent years [1]. SC has found many scientific and technological applications. The control of the SC spectral characteristics is crucial in most of them. A pioneering attempt in this direction was reported in Ref. [2]. We point out that SC is typically generated by accessing the anomalous dispersion regime of the fiber, i.e., when the group velocity dispersion (GVD) coefficient is lower than zero, β 2 ≪0. The recent achievement of soft-glass PCFs, namely, PCFs made up of a transparent material that shows higher nonlinear response than the widely used fused silica, opens new p…

Supercontinuum to solitons: New nonlinear structures in fiber propagation

2010

We review our recent work in the field of optical rogue wave physics and applications. Beginning from a brief survey of the well-known noise and incoherence processes in optical fiber supercontinuum generation, we trace the links to recent developments in studying the emergence of high contrast localised breather structures in both spontaneous and induced nonlinear instabilities. In the latter case, we discuss our recent measurements that have reported the experimental observation of the Peregrine soliton, a unique class of rational soliton predicted to exist over 25 years ago and never previously observed.
