Polymer-specific effects of bulk relaxation and stringlike correlated motion in the dynamics of a supercooled polymer melt

We analyze dynamical heterogeneities in a simulated “bead-spring” model of a nonentangled, supercooled polymer melt. We explore the importance of chain connectivity on the spatially heterogeneous motion of the monomers. We find that when monomers move, they tend to follow each other in one-dimensional paths, forming strings as previously reported in atomic liquids and colloidal suspensions. The mean string length is largest at a time close to the peak time of the mean cluster size of mobile monomers. This maximum string length increases, roughly in an exponential fashion, on cooling toward the critical temperature TMCT of the mode-coupling theory, but generally remains small, although large…
Interfacial properties of glassy polymer melts: A Monte Carlo study

The properties of the interface between a polymer melt and a solid wall are studied over a wide range of temperatures by dynamic Monte Carlo simulations. It is shown that in the supercooled state near the glass transition of the melt an “interphase” forms, the structure of which is influenced by the wall. The thickness of this interphase is determined from the monomer density profile near the surface and is strongly temperature dependent. At low glass-like temperatures it is larger than the bulk radius of gyration of the chains.
Dynamic heterogeneity in supercooled ortho-terphenyl studied by multidimensional deuteron NMR

Using deuteron NMR, we have studied molecular reorientation rates and rate exchange processes in supercooled ortho-terphenyl. We monitor the re-equilibration of differently selected subensembles through four-time stimulated echo experiments. A comparison of the two-time with the four-time echoes suggests that the characteristic time scales for reorientation and dynamical exchange are relatively similar. The four-time correlation functions were described using various multi-state rate exchange models.
Temperature dependence of the static structure factor of ortho-terphenyl in the supercooled liquid regime close to the glass transition

Abstract Studying the temperature dependence of the static structure factor of ortho-terphenyl from the liquid state down to the glass we find that the main peak of S ( Q ) is split into two maxima which behave quite differently. While the maximum at Q =1.4 A −1 is not much affected by the temperature variation the one at 1.9 A −1 is significantly enhanced. This effect is connected with a change of the short range order, i.e. of the intermolecular distances, but evolves continuously. Thus the dynamic anomalies that have been observed in this system around a characteristic temperature T c ≈290 K are not simply due to a discontinuous change in S ( Q ) but can be attributed to the existence of…
Numerical study of silicon crystal ridge growth

Abstract The size of the ridge-like protrusions appearing on the external surface of dislocation-free 〈 100 〉 silicon crystals grown from a melt was studied theoretically. According to existing models the growth of the ridges is caused by the presence of { 111 } crystal planes at the crystal–melt interface. They affect the height of triple phase line, free surface orientation and the crystal growth angle. A numerical 2-dimensional model was proposed for the calculation of the size of the crystal ridges. In this paper, we present the results of deep inelastic neutron scattering (DINS) measurements on supercooled water confined within the pores (average pore diameter ~ 20 Ã ) of a disordered hydrophilic silica matrix obtained through hydrolysis and polycondensation of the alkoxide precursor Tetra-Methyl-Ortho-Silicate via the sol-gel method. Experiments were performed at two temperatures (250 K and 210 K, i.e., before and after the putative liquidâliquid transition of supercooled confined water) on a âwetâ sample with hydration h ~ 40% w/w, which is high enough to have water-filled pores but low enough to avoid water crystallization. International audience; In this work we investigate, by means of elastic neutron scattering, the pressure dependence of mean square displacements (MSD) of hydrogen atoms of deeply cooled water confined in the pores of a three-dimensional disordered SiO 2 xerogel; experiments have been performed at 250 and 210 K from atmospheric pressure to 1200 bar. The " pressure anomaly " of supercooled water (i.e., a mean square displacement increase with increasing pressure) is observed in our sample at both temperatures; however, contrary to previous simulation results and to the experimental trend observed in bulk water, the pressure effect is smaller at lower (210 K) than at higher (250 K) temperatur…
