Use of an artificial model of monitoring data to aid interpretation of principal component analysis

2000

Abstract An artificial data matrix of element concentrations at sampling locations was created which included six simulated gradients of correlated variables (Ca+Mg, Ni+V, Pb+Cu+Zn, Cd, Fe and K), representing a simplified model of a National survey. The data matrix model was used to explore the efficiency with which Principal Components Analysis (PCA), without and with Varimax rotation, could derive the imposed gradients. The dependence of PCA on outliers was decreased by log-transformation of data. The Components derived from non-rotated PCA were confounded by bipolar clusters and oblique gradients, both resulting in superimposition of two independent gradients on one Component. Therefore…

Geometric Measurement Analysis Versus Fourier Series Analysis for Shape Characterization Using the Gastropod Shell (Trivia) as an Example

2003

Varied and efficient methods have been developed to describe and quantify natural objects. The most common ones use superimposition techniques (e.g. Procrustes methods; Bookstein, 1991), decomposition into harmonics (Fourier series and functions, wavelets; Anstey and Delmet, 1973; Christopher and Waters, 1974; Gevirtz, 1976; Lestrel, 1997; Toubin and others, 1999; Verrecchia, Van Grootel, and Guillemet, 1996; Younger and Ehrlich, 1977), analysis of spiral functions (e.g. Raup parameters; Raup, 1961, 1966; Tursch, 1998), and combinations of parameters from elementary geometry (e.g. circularity index, lengthening; Coster and Chermant, 1989; Schmidt-Kittler, 1986; Viriot, Chaline, and Schaaf, …

Diffusion effects in a nonlinear electrical lattice

1998

International audience; We consider a nonlinear electrical network modeling the generalized Nagumo equation. Focusing on the particular case where the initial load of the lattice consists in the superimposition of a coherent information weakly varying in space and a perturbation of small amplitude, we show that the perturbation can be eliminated quickly, almost without disturbing the information.

Lens Effect and CMB Anisotropies: Deviations from Gaussianity

2003

The CMB sky can be seen as the superimposition of two components, one of them is the temperature distribution in the absence of lensing and the other one is the correction caused by lensing. In the model under consideration, the first of these components is Gaussian, but the second is not. Numerical methods to calculate angular correlations in the lens component are designed and tested. Some of these correlations are estimated. Deviations from Gaussianity are confirmed.

A Saturation Model of the Synchronous Reluctance Motor and its Identification by Genetic Algorithms

2018

This paper proposes a complete saturation model of the Synchronous Reluctance Motor (Syn1231), accounting for both the self-saturation and cross-saturation effects. This model is based on an analytical relationship between the stator flux and current components, and is characterized by parameters presenting an interesting physical interpretation, differently from many other saturation model in the scientific literature. It proposes also an identification technique of such a model based on stand-still tests, without the need of locking the rotor. The proposed saturation model permits the complete description of the magnetic behaviour of the machine with 8 parameters, fewer than those require…

Mountain building in NW Sicily from the superimposition of subsequent thrusting and folding events during Neogene: structural setting and tectonic ev…

2017

We present a 1:25.000 scale geological map of the Kumeta-Pizzuta ridge in north-western Sicily (Italy), achieved by integrating stratigraphic, structural and geophysical data. In this area, the tectonic edifice results from the piling-up of deep-water-, carbonate platform- and pelagic platform-derived tectonic units (Imerese and Sicilide, Panormide and Trapanese domains, respectively) resulting from deformations of the former southern Tethyan continental margin. The structural setting shows interference of tectonic events, different types of structural styles and different scales of deformational patterns. Early overthrust of the Imerese on the Trapanese units (since the late Serravallian) …

Differences between panoramic and Cone Beam-CT in the surgical evaluation of lower third molars

2017

Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability to identify the contiguity between the root of the mandibular third molar and the mandibular canal (MC) in panoramic radiographs compared with Cone Beam-CT. Material and methods Panoramic radiographs of 326 third molars and CBCT radiographs of 86 cases indicated for surgery and considered at risk were evaluated. The following signs were assessed in panoramic radiographs as risk factors: radiolucent band, loss of MC border, change in MC direction, MC narrowing, root narrowing, root deviation, bifid apex, superimposition, and contact between the root third molar and the MC. Results Radiographic signs associated with absence of MC co…

Software for automated application of a reference-based method fora posterioridetermination of the effective radiographic imaging geometry

2005

Objectives: Presentation and validation of software developed for automated and accurate application of a reference-based algorithm (reference sphere method: RSM) inferring the effective imaging geometry from quantitative radiographic image analysis. Methods: The software uses modern pattern recognition and computer vision algorithms adapted for the particular application of automated detection of the reference sphere shadows (ellipses) with subpixel accuracy. It applies the RSM algorithm to the shadows detected, thereby providing threedimensional Cartesian coordinates of the spheres. If the three sphere centres do not lie on one line, they uniquely determine the imaging geometry. Accuracy …

Spiral-CT und 3 D-Rekonstruktion des Tracheobronchialbaumes zur Auswahl geeigneter Doppellumentuben vor Einzellungenbeatmung

1997

Purpose To assess the potential of 3-D spiral CT in the selection of adequate double-lumen tubes (DLT) for one-lung-ventilation. Materials and methods 3-D spiral CT of eight different DLTs was performed with standardized acquisition parameters: section thickness 4 mm, table speed 6 mm/s, increment 3 mm and standardised thresholds, window settings and magnification zoom. The accuracy was confirmed by measuring 3-D objects on screen and original DLTs by vernier caliper. 3-D spiral CT was performed in 20 patients preoperatively with slice thickness 4-8 mm, pitch 1-1.5, increment 4-8 mm. To select the adequate DLT size the 3-D reconstructions of the patient's tracheobronchial tree and of the DL…

Shape change in the atlas with congenital midline non-union of its posterior arch: a morphometric geometric study.

2017

Background Context The congenital midline non-union of the posterior arch of the atlas is a developmental variant present at a frequency ranging from 0.7% to 3.9%. Most of the reported cases correspond to incidental findings during routine medical examination. In cases of posterior non-union, hypertrophy of the anterior arch and cortical bone thickening of the posterior arches have been observed and interpreted as adaptive responses of the atlas to increased mechanical stress. Purpose We sought to determine if the congenital non-union of the posterior arch results in a change in the shape of the atlas. Study Design/Setting This study is an analysis of the first cervical vertebrae from osteo…
