Randomized pilot study and qualitative evaluation of a clinical decision support system for brain tumour diagnosis based on SV 1H MRS: Evaluation as …

2014

The results of a randomized pilot study and qualitative evaluation of the clinical decision support system Curiam BT are reported. We evaluated the system's feasibility and potential value as a radiological information procedure complementary to magnetic resonance (MR) imaging to assist novice radiologists in diagnosing brain tumours using MR spectroscopy (1.5 and 3.0T). Fifty-five cases were analysed at three hospitals according to four non-exclusive diagnostic questions. Our results show that Curiam BT improved the diagnostic accuracy in all the four questions. Additionally, we discuss the findings of the users' feedback about the system, and the further work to optimize it for real envir…

Using store level scanner data to improve category management decisions: Developing positioning maps

2009

This paper provides evidence of the usefulness of aggregated point-of-sale scanner data to infer the positioning of competing brands, providing valuable information for category management and hence facilitating decision making. Specifically, the authors propose a methodology to study the internal market structure based on market share models with latent heterogeneity when only macro-level time series data (not individual choices) are available. The proposed approach assumes a multidimensional decomposition, latent in the preference structure that is implicit to these types of models. By empirically applying this approach, the authors (1) simultaneously identify both latent dimensions of co…

Neural networks as effective techniques in clinical management of patients: some case studies

2004

In this paper, we present four examples of effective implementation of neural systems in the daily clinical practice. There are two main goals in this work; the first one is to show that neural networks are especially well-suited tools for solving different kind of medical/pharmaceutical problems, given the complex input output relationships and the few a priori knowledge about data distribution and variable relations. The second goal is to develop specific software applications, which enclose complex mathematical models, to clinicians; thus, the use of such models as decision support systems is facilitated. Four important pharmaceutical problems are considered in this study: identificatio…

Multiple Objective Analysis of Input-Output Models for Emergency Management

1990

This paper shows how a visual, interactive, dynamic multiple objective linear programming decision support system can effectively be used for analyzing input-output models. We have applied our approach to studying the quantitative effects of economic or political crises to the Finnish economy. Examples of such crises are nuclear power plant accidents, trade embargoes, and international conflicts. An input-output model of the Finnish economy with 17 industries (sectors) is employed. Our system has been implemented on a microcomputer and is being used by the National Board of Economic Defense. Several typical case situations are discussed.

Internet based exercise management system for worksite exercise and well-being intervention

2012

Reijo Kangas. 2012. Internet based exercise management system for worksite exercise and well-being intervention. University of Jyväskylä. Department of Sport Sciences, Master’s thesis in Sport and Exercise Psychology, 105 pages. The studies of exercise motivation theories can be used for the requirements of exercise management software systems. User-friendly mobile and web applications may wake up people’s interest of their own awareness of unhealthy manners like obesity, sedentary behavior and possible mental health problems of inactivity. The aim of the present study was to plan, organize and evaluate an internet based exercise intervention for workers. Other purpose of the study was to o…

Les dispositifs de prise en charge de la difficulté scolaire à l’école élémentaire : étude de leur fonctionnement et de leurs effets sur la réussite …

2018

With the Jules Ferry laws ensuring free and compulsory schooling, equal chances of succeeding were expected in a meritocratic established school system. Reality proved otherwise: attending school still does not allow all schoolchildren to progress in the same way, as some of them encounter difficulties from the beginning. The struggle against academic failure cannot stop a considerable amount of pupils from finishing school without satisfactorily mastering the basic elements of the programmes. Moreover, recent research works have seemed to prove programmes providing assistance for underachievers to be ineffective. This thesis offers a comparative evaluation of such support systems in element…

Subsurface Drip Irrigation and ICT for the Innovative Irrigation Water Management: Application to a Citrus Crop (C. reticulata cv. Tardivo di Ciacull…

2020

Subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) is considered one of the most efficient irrigation systems because it allows the optimization of crop water productivity maximizing, at the same time, farmers’ economic benefit. However, to take full advantage of SDI systems it is necessary to prevent emitter obstructions caused by root intrusion, as well as to apply water-saving strategies, such as regulated deficit irrigation (RDI). Regarding the first aspect, manufacturers are claiming different techniques to protect emitters from root intrusion, such as mechanical barriers, addition with different chemical compounds into the emitter itself or chemicals into irrigation water. On the other hand, the applic…

フィンランドのネウボラの視察から見えたわが国の利用者支援事業の課題 -ケースの視察及び利用者インタビューから- [Issues Related to Japan's User Support Project for Children and Childcare Support System Dis…

2016

The aim of this article is to introduce Neuvola, a childrearing support service in Finland, and to discuss issues related to Japanʼs User Support Project for Children and Childcare Support System. The authors visited and sat in on Neuvola sessions for three clients, and they conducted interviews with a client between October 4 and 8, 2015. Clients and Neuvola nurses were relaxed, and clients initiated the topics discussed during the visit. There was rapport between clients and Neuvola nurses, and clients seemed to be at ease in receiving the service. During the interviews, the client mentioned that she was able to talk about sensitive issues because the nurses would help the family to move …

SEMANTIC MANAGEMENT OF INTELLIGENT MULTI-AGENTS SYSTEMS IN A 3D ENVIRONMENT

2011

8 pages; International audience; This paper presents a new approach combining the 3D elements composing the environment of mobile agents with semantic descriptors from Building Information Models. Our proposal is based on the IFC standard, which is used in the field of Civil Engineering to build digital models of buildings during the design phase. The semantic of IFC objects composing the 3D environment is used to select and set up 3D objects and elements of simulation scenarios. The result of this process dynamically generates the input files for the JaSIM environment that performs the simulation. These files deserve the representation of the virtual environment in which the simulation is …
