Automating HAZOP analysis of batch processes

1999

Abstract A support system for the hazard and operabilty studies of batch processes is presented. The search of causes and consequences is automatically performed using similar qualitative models, in form of logic minitrees, for the phases of the operation procedure and the equipment units. More models are considered for the equipment units, one for each subtask in wich they are involved. The search algorithm is integrated by rules for subdividing the plant to be analysed in nodes.

Studies regarding supported housing and the built environment for people with mental health problems : A mixed-methods literature review

2019

Abstract Places where people live are important for their personal and social lives. This is also the case for people with mental health problems living in supported housing. To summarise the existing knowledge, we conducted a systematic review of 13 studies with different methodologies regarding the built environment in supported housing and examined their findings in a thematic analysis. The built environment of supported housing involves three important and interrelated themes: well-being, social identity and privacy. If overregulated by professionals or located in problematic neighbourhoods or buildings, the settings could be an obstacle to recovery. If understood as meaningful places w…

Comparative Study of Several Machine Learning Algorithms for Classification of Unifloral Honeys

2021

Unifloral honeys are highly demanded by honey consumers, especially in Europe. To ensure that a honey belongs to a very appreciated botanical class, the classical methodology is palynological analysis to identify and count pollen grains. Highly trained personnel are needed to perform this task, which complicates the characterization of honey botanical origins. Organoleptic assessment of honey by expert personnel helps to confirm such classification. In this study, the ability of different machine learning (ML) algorithms to correctly classify seven types of Spanish honeys of single botanical origins (rosemary, citrus, lavender, sunflower, eucalyptus, heather and forest honeydew) was investi…

A review of interventions to support the educational attainments of children and adolescents in foster care

2018

This rapid review seeks to harvest and draw out common findings from intervention studies aimed at supporting the educational and socio-emotional attainments of school-age children and adolescents in foster care. Using carefully executed inclusion and exclusion criteria, data were collected systematically from six electronic databases. The 19 articles included were appraised critically for quality and analysed using qualitative content analysis. The survey of studies revealed an initial need to improve the quality and quantity of research designed to evaluate interventions of this kind. Nevertheless, an analysis of the findings produced sufficient robust evidence to inform policy and pract…

Life Satisfaction and Psychological Distress of African Immigrants in Italy and Spain: the protective role of social support and sense of community

2021

This article analyzes whether migrants’ distress factors are reduced, and life satisfaction increased by the sense of community and support from friendship or family networks, with age and length of residence serving as co-variables. Host country, gender, migration (economic/non-economic), employment (employed/unemployed) and legal status (regulated/unregulated) were all treated as moderating variables. We tested this theoretical model in two samples of African immigrants residing in Palermo (Italy) and Malaga (Spain), confirming the predictive capacity of the independent variables. Interesting results emerged relating to the effects of length of residence, employment status and support fro…

Doctoral: A smartphone-based decision support tool for the early detection of oral potentially malignant disorders

2023

Oral potentially malignant disorders can be defined as mucosal lesions and conditions with an increased risk of malignant transformation. Oral potentially malignant disorders are a significant health burden, and they are often diagnosed late due to scant attention to routine dental practice and the low number of specialized oral medicine centres. This report summarizes the DoctOral experience, a research initiative, providing a free smartphone-based decision support tool for the general medical/dental practitioner; the tool is based on the clinical appearance of oral lesions. Captured, oral pictures can be immediately examined via interactive decision trees and constructed on the smartphon…

Social Support and Resilience as Predictors of Prosocial Behaviors before and during COVID-19

2022

The objective of this research was to analyze the relationship between social support and resilience with prosocial behavior before and during the confinement caused by COVID-19. Materials and Methods: The participants were divided into a confined group (228 women and 84 men) and an unconfined group (153 women and 105 men), all of whom were university students. Instruments were applied to measure the variables proposed. Results: Social support predicted 24.4% of the variance in prosocial behavior among women and 12% among men in the confined group; no evidence of this relationship was found in the unconfined groups. Resilience predicted 7% of the variance in prosocial behavior among confine…

“They make a diference” : a qualitative study of providers’ experiences of peer support in outpatient clinics for people living with HIV

2022

Abstract Background Although the life expectancy of people living with HIV has increased, they are still often disconnected from society through stigma and discrimination. Peer support has been found to increase social support. Given the limited research on peer support from the providers’ perspective, this study explored how peer supporters experience their roles and contributions in outpatient clinics (OPCs). Additionally, healthcare professionals’ perceptions of working with peer supporters in OPCs were examined.  Methods This qualitative study included purposively selected peer supporters (n = 10) and healthcare professionals (n = 5) from five OPCs in Norway in 2020. In-depth interviews…

Demographics, Socioeconomic Status, Social Distancing, Psychosocial Factors and Psychological Well-Being among Undergraduate Students during the COVI…

2021

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted on academic routine because of the social distancing measures. This study examined the relationships of sociodemographic characteristics, social distancing aspects and psychosocial factors on psychosocial well-being among undergraduate students during the social distancing period due to COVID-19. A web-based survey was conducted of undergraduate students at a public university in Brazil (n = 620). Demographics, socioeconomic status (SES), social distancing factors, negative affectivity (DASS-21), sense of coherence (SOC-13), social support and psychosocial well-being (GHQ-12) were measured. The direct and indirect links between was variables was tested using s…
