Automatic recognition of multiple acoustic events is an interesting problem in machine listening that generalizes the classical speech/non-speech or speech/music classification problem. Typical audio streams contain a diversity of sound events that carry important and useful information on the acoustic environment and context. Classification is usually performed by means of hidden Markov models (HMMs) or support vector machines (SVMs) considering traditional sets of features based on Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) and their temporal derivatives, as well as the energy from auditory-inspired filterbanks. Quantification and classification of high-resolution magic angle spinning data for brain tumor diagnosis.

The goal of this work is to propose a complete protocol (preprocessing, processing and classification) for classifying brain tumors with proton high-resolution magic-angle spinning ((1)H HR-MAS) data. The different steps of the procedure are detailed and discussed. Feature extraction techniques such as peak integration, including also the automated quantitation method AQSES, were combined with linear (LDA) and non-linear (least-squares support vector machine or LS-SVM) classifiers. Hyperspectral detection of citrus damage with Mahalanobis kernel classifier

Presented is a full computer vision system for the identification of post-harvest damage in citrus packing houses. The method is based on the combined use of hyperspectral images and the Mahalanobis kernel classifier. More accurate and reliable results compared to other methods are obtained in several scenarios and acquired images.

Significance The way we organize our social relationships is key to understanding the structure of our society. We propose a quantitative theory to tackle this issue, assuming that our capacity to maintain relationships is limited and that different types of relationships require different investments. The theory accounts for well-documented empirical evidence on personal networks, such that connections are typically arranged in layers of increasing size and decreasing emotional content. Genome-Wide Association Study for Incident Myocardial Infarction and Coronary Heart Disease in Prospective Cohort Studies: The CHARGE Consortium

Background Data are limited on genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for incident coronary heart disease (CHD). Moreover, it is not known whether genetic variants identified to date also associate with risk of CHD in a prospective setting. Methods We performed a two-stage GWAS analysis of incident myocardial infarction (MI) and CHD in a total of 64,297 individuals (including 3898 MI cases, 5465 CHD cases). SNPs that passed an arbitrary threshold of 5×10−6 in Stage I were taken to Stage II for further discovery.
