Abstract A water-soluble iron(III) complex [Fe(H2O)3(L)]·5H2O (1) was prepared by reaction of iron(III) chloride with 5-chloro-3-(2-(4,4-dimethyl-2,6-dioxocyclohexylidene)hydrazinyl)-2-hydroxy-benzenesulfonic acid (H3L). The complex was characterized by IR, 1H NMR and ESI-MS spectroscopies, elemental and X-ray crystal structural analyses. The coordination environment of the central iron(III) is a distorted octahedron, three sites being occupied by L3− ligand, which chelates in O,N,O fashion, while three other sites are filled with the water molecules. Hierarchical Self-Assembly of Supramolecular Spintronic Modules into 1D- and 2D-Architectures with Emergence of Magnetic Properties

Hierarchical self-assembly of complex supramolecular architectures allows for the emergence of novel properties at each level of complexity. The reaction of the ligand components A and B with Fe II cations generates the (2 K 2) grid-type functional building modules 1 and 2, presenting spin-tran- sition properties and preorganizing an array of coordination sites that sets the stage for a second assembly step. Strong Emission Enhancement in pH‐Responsive 2:2 Cucurbit[8]uril Complexes

Organic fluorophores, particularly stimuli-responsive molecules, are very interesting for biological and material sciences applications, but frequently limited by aggregation- and rotation-caused photoluminescence quenching. A series of easily accessible bipyridinium fluorophores, whose emission is quenched by a twisted intramolecular charge-transfer (TICT) mechanism, is reported. Encapsulation in a cucurbit[7]uril host gave a 1:1 complex exhibiting a moderate emission increase due to destabilization of the TICT state inside the apolar cucurbituril cavity. Anthracyclines self-assemble in water into dimers. In the presence of sufficiently high salt (NaCl) concentrations, solutions of the antibiotic doxorubicin, but not those of the closely related molecules daunomycin and epirubicin, turn into gels barely compatible with the presence of small oligomers. The use of spectroscopic, scattering, imaging and computational techniques, allowed light to be shed on the self-assembly process that triggered doxorubicin gelification. Abstract Hypothesis To overcome the contamination of water by heavy metals the adsorption of the pollutant on gel phases is an attractive solution since gels are inexpensive, potentially highly efficient and form a distinct phase while allowing diffusion of the contaminated water throughout the material. Binding abilities of a chiral calix[4]resorcinarene: a polarimetric investigation on a complex case of study

Polarimetry was used to investigate the binding abilities of a chiral calix[4]resorcinarene derivative, bearing L-proline subunits, towards a set of suitably selected organic guests. The simultaneous formation of 1:1 and 2:1 host–guest inclusion complexes was observed in several cases, depending on both the charge status of the host and the structure of the guest. Thus, the use of the polarimetric method was thoroughly revisited, in order to keep into account the occurrence of multiple equilibria. Photocontrolled On-Surface Pseudorotaxane Formation with Well-Ordered Macrocycle Multilayers.

The photoinduced pseudorotaxane formation between a photoresponsive axle and a tetralactam macrocycle was investigated in solution and on glass surfaces with immobilized multilayers of macrocycles. In the course of this reaction, a novel photoswitchable binding station with azobenzene as the photoswitchable unit and diketopiperazine as the binding station was synthesized and studied by NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy. Glass surfaces have been functionalized with pyridine-terminated SAMs and subsequently with multilayers of macrocycles through layer-by-layer self assembly.
