Momentum-space spectroscopy for advanced analysis of dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton coupled and bent waveguides

We perform advanced radiation leakage microscopy of routing dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguiding structures. By direct plane imaging and momentum-space spectroscopy, we analyze the energy transfer between coupled waveguides as a function of gap distance and reveal the momentum distribution of curved geometries. Specifically, we observed a clear degeneracy lift of the effective indices for strongly interacting waveguides in agreement with coupled-mode theory. We use momentum-space representations to discuss the effect of curvature on dielectric-loaded waveguides. Designed surface modes propagating along hyperbolic metamaterials

We report on surface-wave propagation (SWP) that occurs in semi-infinite hyperbolic metamaterials whose optical axis is set in the interface plane. In practice it is implemented by a multi-layered metal-dielectric nanostructure that is cut normally to the layers. Our theoretical analysis shows that various conditions can be designed enabling distinct regimes of SWP. We concluded that hybridization of SWP polarization leads to tighter confinement near the interface as compared with conventional surface plasmon polaritons. Near-field beam displacement at surface plasmon resonance

International audience; A finite-size beam exciting a surface plasmon polariton (SPP) in a prism coupling configuration experiences an in-plane displacement that can be used for the characterization of plasmonic components by means of near-field optical microscopy. We first demonstrate experimentally the existence of this displacement by taking near-field images of finite-width metal strips. Next, the properties of this shift are analyzed in detail. Absence of mutual polariton scattering for strongly coupled surface plasmon polaritons and dye molecules with a large Stokes shift

The understanding and control of the dynamics of hybrid modes consisting of strongly coupled surface plasmon polaritons and molecular excitations of dye molecules is of great timely interest, as it allows one to tailor interactions between optical signals as needed for active all-optical devices. Here we utilize dye molecules with an especially large Stokes shift to demonstrate the absence of mutual scatterings among the strongly coupled hybrid modes. We employ a quantum mechanical three-level model and show that the hybrid modes decay via dephasing and internal relaxation of the molecules to a fluorescing state of the dye, which can be used as a measure for the decay. Quantum plasmonics with multi-emitters: application to stimulated Raman adiabatic passage

We construct a mode-selective effective model describing the interaction of the localised surface plasmon polaritons (LSPs) supported by a spherical metal nanoparticle (MNP) with N quantum emitters (QEs) in an arbitrary geometric arrangement. Simplifying previously presented procedures, we develop a formulation in which the field response in the presence of the MNP can be decomposed into orthogonal modes, expanding the Green tensor of the system in the spherical vector harmonics basis and using the generalized global Löwdin orthogonalization algorithm. Optimization of surface plasmons launching from subwavelength hole arrays: modelling and experiments

International audience; The launching of surface plasmons by micro-gratings of subwavelength apertures milled in a thick metal film is important for the development of surface plasmon based circuits. By comparing the near-field optical images of such surface plasmon sources with the results of a Huygens-Fresnel principle based scattering model, we show that the properties of the locally launched SP beams such as divergence or uniformity can be tuned by adjusting the shape of the micro-gratings. This allows us to propose an optimized source array well adapted for providing a narrow, collimated and uniform beam. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.

Surface plasmon interference fringes in back-reflection

We report the experimental observation of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) interference fringes with near-unity visibility and half-wavelength periodicity obtained in back reflection on a Bragg mirror. The presented method based on leakage radiation microscopy (LRM) represents an alternative solution to optical near-field analysis and opens new ways for the quantitative analysis of SPP fringes. With LRM we investigate various SPP interference patterns and analyze the high reflectivity of Bragg mirror in comparison with theoretical models.

Optical near-field distributions of surface plasmon waveguide modes

International audience; Thin gold stripes, featuring various widths in the micrometer range, were microfabricated to obtain surface-plasmon guides on a glass substrate. Each metal stripe (MS) was excited by an incident surface-plasmon polariton which was itself launched on an extended thin gold film by the total internal reflection of a focused beam coming through the substrate. Excitation of surface plasmon polaritons guided mode by Rhodamine B molecules doped in PMMA stripe

In this letter we show the inclusion of Rhodamine B molecules (RhB) inside a dielectric-loaded surface plasmon waveguide enables for a precise determination of its optical characteristics. The principle relies on the coupling of the fluorescence emission of the dye to plasmonic waveguided modes allowed in of the structure. Using leakage radiation microscopy in real and reciprocal spaces, we measure the propagation constant of the mode and as well as their attenuation length.

Leakage radiation microscopy of surface plasmon coupled emission: investigation of gain-assisted propagation in an integrated plasmonic waveguide.

International audience; Using a single-mode dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide doped with quantum dots, we were able to slightly increase the propagation length of the mode by stimulated emission of plasmon. We analyse the amplification phenomenon in the visible range by combining leakage radiation microscopy and surface plasmon coupled emission techniques.
