The enthalpy of transfer (ΔHt) of nonionic polymers at a fixed concentration from water to aqueous substrate solutions as a function of the substrate concentration (fSmS) was determined. The substrates studied are sodium perfluorobutanoate to sodium perfluorooctanoate, and the polymers are poly(ethyleneglycol)s with molecular weights of 400 and 35 000. For the PEG 400-sodium perfluoroheptanoate−water systems, measurements were also performed at some polymer compositions. As a general feature, the enthalpy of transfer steeply changes with fSmS, reaching a maximum beyond which it decreases, tending to level off. An easy strategy to obtain inorganic reverse micelles based on halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and alkyltrimethylammonium bromides has been developed. The selective modification of the HNTs external surface with cationic surfactants endows to generate tubular nanostructures with a hydrophobic shell and a hydrophilic cavity. The influence of the surfactants alkyl chain on the HNTs functionalization degree has been investigated. Structure and properties of even-electron anionic species formed by bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) and divalent metal ions (MII) with stoichiometry [AOTMIICl2]– have been investigated by using electrospray ionization and different mass spectrometry techniques, such as high resolution, accurate mass measurements, collision-induced dissociation (CID) multiple-stage mass spectrometry. Enthalpies of dilution and osmotic coefficients of sodium decylsulfate (NaDeS)-dodecyldimethylamine oxide (DDAO) mixtures in water were determined at 298 and 310 K, respectively. From the enthalpies of dilution, the apparent and then the partial molar relative enthalpies of the surfactant mixtures were calculated. From the osmotic coefficients, calculated at 298 K, the non-ideal free energies were derived. The latter were combined with the partial molar relative enthalpies to obtain the non-ideal entropies. The confinement of finite amounts of nickel chloride in the hydrophilic core of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) reverse micelles dispersed in n-heptane has been investigated by FT-IR, UV-vis-NIR and fluorescence spectroscopies. The analysis of experimental data consistently leads to hypothesize that NiCl(2) forms small size ionic clusters stabilized by a monolayer of oriented surfactant molecules. The structure of (1R,2S)-dodecyl(2-hydroxy-1-methyl-2-phenylethyl)dimethylammonium bromide (DMEB) reverse micelles, at various water-to-surfactant molar ratio (R-w, R-w = [water]/[DMEB]) and DMEB concentrations, has been investigated by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS). SAXS data of dry reverse micelles are consistent with a model of spherical hydrophilic core surrounded by DMEB alkyl chains whose polydispersity decreases significantly with surfactant concentration. Abstract A calorimetric technique has been used to study complex formation between α-, β- and γ-cyclodextrins (αCD, βCD and γCD) and some surfactants (sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS), hexadecyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and p-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl) phenoxypoly(oxyethyleneglycol) (Triton X-100)). The experimental data indicate that some complexes (SDS-αCD, SDS-βCD and CTAB-αCD) are very stable and allow direct determination of their stoichiometry and molar enthalpy of complex formation. Those for other complexes closely fit a model based on an equilibrium reaction between surfactant, cyclodextrin and a single complex.
