Evaluation of the indication for surgical extraction of third molars according to the oral surgeon and the primary care dentist : Experience in the M…
2008
Introduction. Third molar extraction is the most frequent procedure in oral surgery. The present study evaluates the indication of third molar extraction as established by the primary care dentist (PCD) and the oral surgeon, and compares the justification for extraction with the principal reason for patient consultation. Patients and method. A descriptive study was made of 319 patients subjected to surgical removal of a third molar in the context of the Master of Oral Surgery and Implantology (Barcelona University Dental School, Barcelona, Spain) between July 2004 and March 2005. The following parameters were evaluated: sex, age, molar, type of impaction, position according to the classific…
Surgical uprighting and repositioning of unerupted molars : features and findings of a retrospective sample
2021
Background Surgical uprighting and repositioning have been proposed to obtain a correct alignment of unerupted permanent molars. A retrospective clinical study was performed to verify the effectiveness of these techniques. Material and Methods In order for a case to be included in the study, adequate clinical documentation was required, including radiographic imaging before and after therapy. The degree of inclination of each treated molar was evaluated on pre-operative panoramic radiographs. Results Fifty-two molars were studied. Molar involvement was more frequent in the mandible (45 cases=86.54%) than in the maxilla (7 cases=13.66%). The mean age of patients treated with completely forme…
Relationship between volume of submandibular salivary stones in vivo determined with cone-beam computer tomography and in vitro with micro-computer t…
2021
Background Successful removal of salivary stones depends on exact pretreatment information of the location, the size and shape of the stones. This study aimed to compare the volume of submandibular sialoliths determined by preoperative Cone-Beam Computer Tomography (CBCT) scans with the volume of the removed stones on micro-Computer Tomography (micro-CT) scans. Material and Methods In this study, using twenty-one submandibular sialoliths, the pretreatment volumes in-vivo measured on CBCT were compared to the volumes of removed stones determined by micro-CT scans. The volume measured on micro-CT scans served as the gold standard. Pre-operative CBCT’s and in-vitro micro-CT’s were converted in…
Child Well-Being in Times of Confinement: The Impact of Dialogic Literary Gatherings Transferred to Homes
2020
The COVID-19 pandemic has created an unexpected situation that has forced people to find educational alternatives to support learning and ensure child well-being. The need for practices that 'open doors' at home as a way to promote a quality education and to foster an environment of supportive relationships and a sense of community, has led to the in-depth analysis of successful educational actions, particularly the Dialogic Literary Gatherings (DLGs). The aim of this article is to show how the transference of DLGs to the home environment has had an impact on child subjective well-being in times of confinement, promoting a safe and supportive environment for learning, interacting, coexistin…
I Cannot Read Your Eye Expression: Suicide Attempters Have Difficulties in Interpreting Complex Social Emotions
2020
International audience; Background: The ability to differentiate emotions in social contexts is important for dealing with challenging social situations. Suicide attempters show some difficulties in emotion recognition that may result in hypersensitivity to social stress. However, other studies on the recognition of social complex emotions found that suicide attempters have similar performances as depressed non-attempters. Objectives: To investigate differences in social emotion recognition in patients with current Major Depressive Episode (MDE) with and without history of suicide attempt. Methods: Two hundred and ten patients with MDE were recruited among whom 115 had lifetime history of s…

Effects of a home-based, exergaming intervention on physical function and pain after total knee replacement in older adults : a randomised controlled…
2023
ObjectivesTo investigate the effects of 4 months of customised, home-based exergaming on physical function and pain after total knee replacement (TKR) compared with standard exercise protocol.MethodsIn this non-blinded randomised controlled trial, 52 individuals aged 60–75 years undergoing TKR were randomised into an exergaming (intervention group, IG) or a standard exercising group (control group, CG). Primary outcomes were physical function and pain measured before and after (2 months and 4 months) surgery using the Oxford Knee Score (OKS) and Timed Up and Go (TUG) test. Secondary outcomes included measures of the Visual Analogue Scale, 10m walking, short physical performance battery, iso…
Palliative Care and End-of-Life Issues in Patients with Brain Cancer Admitted to ICU
2023
Background and Objectives: Palliative care is an interdisciplinary medical specialty focused on improving the quality of life of critically ill patients, including those with frailty, during their illness. Materials and Methods: We conducted an extensive literature review on Pubmed focusing on palliative care in neuro-oncology patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs). Results: We identified 967 articles and, after excluding 952 articles in accordance with the PRISMA flow chart, we included a total of 15 articles in the final selection. The potential role of palliative care in neuro-oncology appears necessary to ensure comprehensive end-of-life patient care. However, this seems under…
Hamstring Graft Preparation for ACL Reconstruction
2022
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction represents one of the most common procedures in orthopedic surgery. It usually involves the harvest of both gracilis and semitendinosus tendons from the ipsilateral knee. Different methods of hamstring graft preparation have been proposed in recent years, to create an adequate graft diameter reducing morbidity linked to gracilis tendon harvesting procedure. More recently, the use of only 1 of the tendons (semitendinosus) in a tripled or quadrupled arrangement has been described, especially in an all-inside type of reconstruction. Having a thicker tendon with a quadrupled semitendinosus (ST), instead of double gracilis and ST enables to have a …
PREOP: an international study of elderly surgical oncology patients to optimize preoperative assessment
2009
Purpose of the study: To test the predictive value of the Groningen Frailty Indicator (GFI), Vulnerable Elders Survey 13 (VES-13), timed “get up and go” and Preoperative Assessment of Cancer in Elderly (PACE) for postoperative mortality and morbidity. Method(s): International multi-center prospective cohort study. The combination of components of PACE, timed “get up and go”, the VES-13 and the GFI are administered within two weeks prior to the surgical procedure. Study population: Patients aged 70 years undergoing elective surgery for a solid tumor under general anesthesia are included. Outcome measures: Primary endpoint is 30 day morbidity and mortality. Secondary endpoints are length of h…
