Imaging of inner ear malformations: a primer for radiologists

2021

AbstractIn the multidisciplinary management of patients with inner ear malformations (IEMs), the correct diagnosis makes the differences in terms of clinical and surgical treatment. The complex anatomical landscape of the inner ear, comprising several small structures, makes imaging of this region particularly challenging for general radiologists. Imaging techniques are important for identifying the presence and defining the type of IEM and the cochlear nerve condition. High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences and high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) are the mainstay imaging techniques in this area. Dedicated MRI and HRCT protocols play an important role in the diagn…

Surgical treatment of cocaine-induced palatal perforations : report of three cases and literature review

2021

Destruction of the osteocartilaginous framework of the nose and sinuses is a well-known side effect of inhaled cocaine. Palate involvement is, however, a very uncommon event that may lead to oronasal communication with the subsequent food and liquids reflux and nasal speech. Given the addictive character of this etiologic agent, the management of cocaine-induced palatal perforations tends to be conservative by means of a prosthetic obturator. In this paper three cases with surgically treated cocaine-induced palatal perforations are reported and a review of the literature is made focusing on the management of this process. Despite the usual reluctancy, surgical palatal reconstruction should …

Surgical management of ameloblastoma. Review of literature

2019

Background Ameloblastoma is an odontogenic tumor that represents 1% of all tumors in the oral cavity and it is clinically classified in three types. Currently, solid and multi-cystic are considered locally aggressive, with high recurrence rates with conservative treatment. Material and methods Objective of the present review is to assess whether the surgical treatment should be conservative or radical. English articles published between 2009-2014, with available summary and in humans were included. Results 241 articles were found, 188 were excluded because analyzing. 53 articles were analyzed and finally 14 were selected for this review. Conclusions The optimal surgical treatment of amelobl…

Adipositaschirurgie bei monogenetisch bedingter Adipositas

2007

Surgical treatment of patients suffering from monogenetic forms of morbid obesity is considered to be the poorest investigated theme in bariatric surgery. This review article presents aspects of genetic disorders in morbid obesity as well as some aspects of surgical treatment in patients with monogenetic forms of morbid obesity (Prader-Willi-Syndrome). Gastric restrictive procedures such as vertical banded gastroplasty or adjustable gastric banding as well as malabsorptive and mix procedures such as biliopancreatic diversion or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass are used for treatment, similar to polygenetic forms of morbid obesity. Until to now there is no evidence-based data because of the small nu…

Communicating with the hepatobiliary surgeon through structured report

2019

Communicating radiological findings to hepatobiliary surgeons is not an easy task due to the complexity of liver imaging, coexistence of multiple hepatic lesions and different surgical treatment options. Recently, the adoption and implementation of structured report in everyday clinical practice has been supported to achieve higher quality, more reproducibility in communication and closer adherence to current guidelines. In this review article, we will illustrate the main benefits, strengths and limitations of structured reporting, with particular attention on the advantages and challenges of structured template in the preoperative evaluation of cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic patients with fo…

Chirurgische Therapie von Lebermetastasen kolorektaler Karzinome

2003

Resection is the only curative treatment of colorectal liver metastases proofed by a long-term follow-up. The operation is indicated if the metastases are completely removable with sufficient liver parenchyma remaining after resection and if the patient is fit for surgery. The resection is not indicated in cases with non resectable extrahepatic tumours and lymph node metastases distal the hepatoduodenal ligament. The postoperative mortality amounts to about 5 % and the 5-year-survival-rates range between 20 and 40 % depending on the selection of patients. Aims of new concepts of operative therapy are the improvement of resectability by preoperative portal vein embolization, the resection co…

2014

It has been claimed that endoscopic calcaneoplasty offers some advantages over open techniques in the surgical treatment of Haglund’s deformity due to reduced postoperative complications like stiffness and pain. Bony over-resection places patients at risk of these complications. The resulting question with regard to the quantitative differences of the extent of the bone removed using these two techniques has not yet been answered. The purpose of the study was to determine the resection volume of calcaneal bone for open and endoscopic surgical techniques.
