Aims: A major proportion of patients with diabetic foot syndrome are older than 65 years. Little is known about outcomes of these elderly patients. Methods: We analysed 245 treatment cases in an observational single-centre study for comorbidities and outcomes over a 6-month period. Results: In all, 122 patients had peripheral arterial disease which was significantly increasing with age ( n = 245, df = 1, χ2 = 23.06, p ⩽ 0.0001). Increasing age correlated positively with decreasing rate of revascularisations ( n = 122, df = 1, χ2 = 4.23, p = 0.039). In total, 23 (9.3%) patients died in the observation period. ABSTRACT PURPOSE: To study quantitative changes in endothelial cell count after implantation of the toric iris-fixated phakic intraocular lens. METHODS: A prospective, non-randomized, self-controlled clinical trial was conducted of 40 eyes (28 myopic, 12 hyperopic) of 23 patients with high ametropia and astigmatism. Non-contact computer-assisted endothelial microscopy was performed before and I1 2, and 3 years after surgery. RESULTS: In the myopic group, mean preoperative endothelial cell count was 3179±531 cells/mm p 2 (range: 1800 to 3900 cells/mm2). Objective To report operative modifications that render construction of the orthotopic Mainz pouch more simple, namely formation of the pouch using absorbable staples and utilization of the ileocecal valve as an antireflux mechanism. Patients and methods Between January 2001 and May 2002 out of 92 cystectomy cases, 21 patients (20 males and 1 female) underwent a simplified orthotopic Mainz pouch. The study was aimed to investigate the outcomes in patients initially successfully treated pharmacologically and immediate PCI <2 hours, and in patients initially successfully treated with pharmacological therapy and delayed PCI (12-72 hours). All patients had to have successful reperfusion, to receive the combination of a standard abciximab infusion plus half dose rtPA. Similar results were observed in both groups. Delayed PCI group showed a favorable trend in restenosis and bleedings (ns) and a significant reduced angiographic evidence of thrombus formation in IRA. Objective Our aim was to detect swallowing abnormalities in patients after short-term neurosurgical interventions under general anaesthesia, comparing patients with supratentorial operations with a group undergoing extracranial neurosurgery (nucleotomy). Methods 20 patients in each group were examined by fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) after general anaesthesia. Results No patient demonstrated dysphagia, aspiration, or oxygen desaturation. Conclusion In these patient groups, early postoperative feeding was safe. Postoperative food intake can probably be allowed early after general anaesthesia.
