Levels of serum retinol-binding protein 4 before and after non-surgical periodontal treatment in lean and obese subjects: An interventional study

2018

AimWe aimed to evaluate serum RBP4 levels before and after periodontal therapy in lean and obese subjects with chronic periodontitis (CP) in order to determine its possible association with periodontitis. Materials and MethodsThis is an interventional study for which a total of 112 lean and 119 obese subjects were recruited. Patients with CP were evaluated before and after three months of non-surgical periodontal treatment. Periodontal, anthropometric, biochemical parameters and serum levels of TNF-, IL-6, hs-CRP and RBP4 were assessed. ResultsSerum RBP4 levels were associated with an increased probability of periodontitis (OR=1.60; 95% CI: 1.02-2.50), showing patients with CP to have highe…

THE SAXOPHONIST'S HERNIA: A RARE CASEREPORT OF ANTERIOR PRIMARY PERINEAL HERNIA IN A YOUNG MALE PATIENT.

2017

Perineal hernia is the protrusion of an intra-abdominal structure into the perineal area, that could be primitive or secondary to trauma or abdominoperineal resection. Main treatment could be transabdominal, transperineal or combined. Here is a rare case of anterior perineal hernia in a young saxophone male patient, treated with a mininvasive perineal approach. A 25-year-old Caucasian male patient referred 1-year history of perineal pain. The pain was more severe when he played his saxophone. Local exam was negative but a dynamic perineal ultrasonography revealed a small anterior perineal hernia. The defect was repaired with a polypropylene plug and the patient was discharged the day after.…

Confocal microscopy: a valid approach to evaluate the three-dimensional characteristics of root-end cavities

2013

Objective: To analyze, using confocal microscope, the three-dimensional characteristics of the root-end cavity preparations completed in root apices of extracted teeth determining their area, perimeter, circularity and cavo-surface angle. Study design: Thirty-two single-rooted extracted teeth underwent endodontic treatment and apical resection. Root-end cavities were prepared according to 4 protocols, as follows: Group1, stainless steel ultrasonic tips (SST) at 33 KHz power; Group 2, SST at 30 KHz power; Group 3, diamond-coated ultrasonic tips (DCT) at 30 KHz power; and Group 4, DCT at 33 KHz power. Finally, root-end cavity was evaluated using a confocal microscope, recording its area, peri…

Optical and Visual Quality of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens Using an Adaptive-Optics Visual Simulator

2013

To evaluate visual and optical quality of the implantable collamer lens for different powers and sizes of incision surgery.Prospective study in humans. An adaptive optics visual simulator was used to measure 3 powers of implantable collamer lenses and simulate the implantable collamer lens wavefront aberration's pattern for small- and large-incision surgery. Visual acuity (VA) and contrast sensitivity were measured in 11 observers for 3- and 5-mm pupils. Modulation transfer function, point spread function, and Strehl ratio were calculated. At 3 mm pupil, no statistically significant differences were found between both incision sizes for any implantable collamer lens power, except for -15 diop…

Repair of the mandibular nerve by means of autologous nerve grafting after resection of the lower jaw

1973

Summary On the basis of two cases we demonstrate our method of autologous nerve grafting for substitution of the mandibular nerve after mandibular resection. The sural nerve served as a donor nerve, the graft was imbedded microsurgically at the juncture points by means of a perineurial interfascicular nerve suture. Oversized grafts of about 20 cm in length were chosen intentionally in order to insert them without tension between the stumps of the recipient nerve and outside the regeneration zone of the bone. In both cases complete resensibilization of the lower lip was reached after about six months.

Endoscopic Treatment of Mesencephalic Ependymal Cysts: Technical Case Report

1998

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the results of different neuroendoscopic surgical procedures for the treatment of mesencephalic ependymal cysts. METHODS: The clinical records of five patients treated for symptomatic mesencephalic ependymal cysts were retrospectively studied. Two patients had been operated on using an endoscope-assisted microsurgical technique and three patients using a pure endoscopic procedure. RESULTS: Adequate fenestration of the cysts was achieved in all of the patients. Two of the patients were symptom-free, and the other three had improved significantly after a mean follow-up duration of 14 months. There was no surgical morbidity. CONCLUSION: Mesencephalic ependymal cysts can …

Ictal functional TCD for the lateralization of the seizure onset zone—a report of two cases

2004

Ictal functional transcranial Doppler sonography (I-fTCD) was used to lateralize the ictal onset zone in the presurgical evaluation of two patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. In one patient, I-fTCD and ictal SPECT were performed simultaneously during EEG-monitoring. In both patients, results were concordant with the ictal SPECT findings, PET and semiology. I-fTCD seems to be an interesting new method to non-invasively lateralize the seizure onset zone with high temporal resolution. I-fTCD and SPECT may give complementary information to lateralize the seizure onset zone.

Survey of Spanish dentists on the prescription of antibiotics and antiseptics in surgery for impacted lower third molars

2015

Background: This study explored the attitude of registered dentists in Biscay towards prescribing antibiotics and/ or antiseptics to prevent potential infections after surgical extraction of completely bone-impacted third molars in otherwise healthy individuals, with no history of infection. Material and Methods: We sent letters to 931 registered dentists in Biscay, with an explanation of the study objectives, description of a case of lower third molar impaction, including a panoramic radiograph, and a questionnaire. The questionnaire asked whether they would prescribe antibiotics and/or antiseptics, in the hypothetical case of lower third molar extraction surgery presented, and if so, when…

Effect of lingual-based flap design on postoperative pain of impacted mandibular third molar surgery : split-mouth randomized clinical trial

2020

Background The extraction of third molars is one of the most common procedures in oral and maxillofacial surgery clinic. Surgical extraction involves the manipulation of both soft and hard tissues, so the patient usually experiences pain, swelling, and trismus in the immediate post-operative period. Several studies have been conducted using different types of surgical flaps to provide access with the least possible damage of soft tissues. Designing and implementing an optimum flap, which provides easier technique, better visibility, minimal post-operative complications, and best healing, is an aspired goal of every oral surgeon. This study aimed to compare lingual-based four-cornered flap w…

Validation of tumour-free distance as novel prognostic marker in early-stage cervical cancer: a retrospective, single-centre, cohort study

2021

Background: The aim of the present study was to assess the prognostic value of tumour-free distance (TFD), defined as the minimum distance of uninvolved stroma between the tumour and peri-cervical stromal ring, in early-stage cervical cancer. Methods: Patients with pathologic FIGO 2009 stage IA1–IIA2 cervical cancer, treated by primary radical surgical treatment between 01/2000 and 11/2019, were retrospectively included. Adjuvant treatment was administered according to the presence of previously established pathologic risk factors. TFD was measured histologically on the hysterectomy specimen. Pre-operative TFD measured at MRI-scan from a cohort of patients was reviewed and compared with pat…
