THE ROLE OF UNBOUNDED TIME-SCALES IN GENERATING LONG-RANGE MEMORY IN ADDITIVE MARKOVIAN PROCESSES

2013

Any additive stationary and continuous Markovian process described by a Fokker–Planck equation can also be described in terms of a Schrödinger equation with an appropriate quantum potential. By using such analogy, it has been proved that a power-law correlated stationary Markovian process can stem from a quantum potential that (i) shows an x-2 decay for large x values and (ii) whose eigenvalue spectrum admits a null eigenvalue and a continuum part of positive eigenvalues attached to it. In this paper we show that such two features are both necessary. Specifically, we show that a potential with tails decaying like x-μ with μ < 2 gives rise to a stationary Markovian process which is not p…

Firm Demography in the Accommodation Industry. Evidence from Italian Insular Regions

2020

The purpose of this study is to analyse the spatial pattern and the post-entry performance of tourism businesses in the Italian insular regions of Sardinia and Sicily. Using geo-referenced micro-data for the period 2011-2014, we explore the spatial distribution of ac-commodation firms in the two insular regions, and then compare the coastal and inland areas of the two regions. We observe a higher dispersion of firms in Sardinia than in Sicily; the latter, however having a higher concentration of firms in coastal and urban areas. We do not find significant differences in survival probability across the two insular regions but we do detect significant differences be-tween coastal and inland a…

Amphibian survival compromised by long-term effects of chytrid fungus

2022

AbstractChytridiomycosis, the disease caused by the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), has been unambiguously implicated in the decline of amphibian populations worldwide. However, the impact of this devastating infectious disease can be difficult to gauge without empirical data on the population-level effects of Bd. Often, assessments of the amphibian chytridiomycosis panzootic are based primarily on expert opinions; as a result, declines in tropical areas are promptly attributed to Bd while its impact on temperate species not suffering from adult mass mortalities is frequently overlooked. Here, we investigated the survival probability in an amphibian species from a tempe…

Resident and transient dynamics, site fidelity and survival in wintering Blackcaps Sylvia atricapilla: evidence from capture-recapture analyses

2007

In their winter quarters, migrant birds may either remain within a small area (resident strategy) or move frequently over a large area looking for locally abundant food (transient strategy). It has been suggested that both strategies could simultaneously occur in the same population. We used time-since-marking capture‐recapture models to infer the coexistence of these two behavioural strategies (transient and resident) among wintering Blackcaps Sylvia atricapilla using weekly recapture data over a 7-year period. A related question is whether Blackcaps, if surviving to the next winter, always return to the same wintering area, so we also used this approach to analyse winter site fidelity and…

Steering Distillation Processes through Zeno dynamics

2005

A quantum system in interaction with a repeatedly measured one undergoes a nonunitary time evolution and is pushed into a subspace substantially determined by the two-system coupling. The possibility of suitably modifying such an evolution through quantum Zeno dynamics (i.e., the generalized quantum Zeno effect) addressing the system toward an a priori decided target subspace is illustrated. Applications and their possible realizations in the context of trapped ions are also discussed.
