Samples of normal esophageal squamous epithelium (n = 10), severe squamous cell dyplasia (n = 22), carcinoma in situ (n = 15), invasive squamous cell carcinoma (n = 172), lymph-node metastasis (n = 21) and 2 permanent esophageal squamous cell carcinoma cell lines were analyzed immunohistochemically for Bax expression using a polyclonal anti-Bax antibody. BACKGROUND The differential expression patterns of cytokeratin 20 (CK20) and 34βE12 antigen in low-grade papillary urothelial tumors of the bladder are discussed. METHODS A retrospective study of 120 patients with low-grade papillary bladder tumors (45 neoplasms of low malignant potential and 75 low-grade WHO G1 carcinomas) was performed. Overexpression of p63 is associated with radiation resistance and prognosis in oral squamous cell carcinoma

Summary Background : The tumor suppressor homologue p63 is expressed in basal and parabasal layers of intraoral mucosa. Full length transcripts with transactivational domain (TA forms) present with homology to p53 and implicate functions governing cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis control. To date studies show an increase of p63 expression in oral dysplasia and additionally high expression levels correlated with poor prognosis for patients with OSCC, whereas a possible link to radiation resistance of tumors has not been investigated yet. The growing population of long-term childhood cancer survivors is at increased risk for severe, therapy-related late effects and premature mortality. The cardiac and vascular late sequelae in long-term survivors of childhood cancer (CVSS) study is a cohort of patients from Germany diagnosed with a neoplasia prior to 15 years of age in the time period 1980 to 1990. Late mortality was evaluated in a total of 4505 individuals who survived 5 years or more after the initial diagnosis (5-year survivors). Survivors with a second primary tumor were excluded. Migration of renal tumor cells depends on dephosphorylation of Shc by PTEN.

The tumor suppressor PTEN is a phosphatase using FAK and Shc as direct substrates, and Akt as a key effector via PIP3. PTEN regulates cell migration and may influence metastases. We quantified PTEN in 135 clear cell renal cell carcinomas (ccRCC) by Western blot analysis and found statistically significant lower PTEN expression in patients who died, usually caused by metastases, within 5 years after surgery, compared to those surviving this time period. Trends in net survival from rectal cancer in six European Latin countries: results from the SUDCAN population-based study.

Rectal cancer is a common and serious disease. The aim of the SUDCAN collaborative study was to compare the net survival from rectal cancer between six European Latin countries (Belgium, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Switzerland) and provide trends in net survival and dynamics of excess mortality rates up to 5 years after diagnosis. The data were extracted from the EUROCARE-5 database. First, net survival was studied over the period 2000-2004 using the Pohar-Perme estimator. Survival of patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in Germany in the early 21st century.

This study provides up-to-date and detailed cancer survival estimates of German patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL, International Statistical Classification of Diseases 10th Revision [ICD-10] codes C82-C85) based on data from 11 cancer registries. Period analysis was used to calculate 5-year relative survival in 2002-2006, overall and by gender, age and histology. Comparison was made with patients with NHL in the United States (US) Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database in the same time period. The heterogeneity of changes in incidence and survival among lymphoid malignancies in a 30-year French population-based registry.

Our specialized population-based registry has allowed us to explore changes in incidence and survival by subtype over the last 30 years. Between 1980 and 2009, 4790 cases of lymphoid malignancies were registered using the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology. The incidence rate of lymphoid malignancies was 20.5 per 100,000 inhabitants per year, and ranged from 0.1 to 4 according to subtype. Five-year net survival was 65%, and ranged from 41% to 93% according to subtype. We observed an increase in 5-year net survival between the periods 1980-1989 and 2000-2009 (58% vs. 70%). Escalating doses of paclitaxel and epirubicin in combination with cisplatin in advanced ovarian epithelial carcinoma: a phase I–II study

Our objective was to identify a new active three-drug combination regimen consisting of paclitaxel (PTX), epirubicin (EPI) and cisplatin as first-line line chemotherapy for advanced ovarian carcinoma. A phase I study was carried out to evaluate the dose-limiting toxicity (DLT) and the maximally tolerated dose (MTD) of PXT and EPI in combination with a fixed dose of cisplatin every 4 weeks. Side-effects were recorded according to the NCI Common Toxicity Criteria.
