Valorisation of urban green areas for producing renewable energy and biochar as growing substrate of Sicilian aromatic and nutraceutical species in a…

2020

This work is aimed at evaluating the possible building up of a gasifier for the energy valorisation of residual biomass deriving from urban areas and their surroundings. The area and the volumes of supply and economic convenience have been determined by implementing a GIS-based geographic method to the localisation and quantification of non-uniform elements of plant biomass. The pyrolysis and gasification processes of the lignocellulosic biomass obtained from pruning and maintenance operations of the urban and ornamental green include the production of a residual amount of biochar. The biochar can be used in agriculture as a soil improver and a substrate alternative to peat in the sustainab…

Los convenios internacionales y la promoción internacional del turismo sostenible

2020

Tourism has become one of the world’s most thriving industries and is a major source of environmental degradation. Therefore, since the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, the international community has adopted several international conventions at the sub-regional and global levels aimed at promoting the sustainable development of tourism. The latest manifestation of this common concern has been the adoption in September 2019 of the Framework Convention on Tourism Ethics, which aims to give new impetus to international and domestic efforts towards responsible, sustainable and accessible tourism. El turismo se ha convertido actualmente en una de las industrias más…

Reshaping the Urban Environment Through Mobility Projects and Practices: Lessons from the Case of Palermo

2016

Transport and mobility are crucial factors in the process of adaptation of contemporary urban areas to the challenge of sustainable development. In this perspective, however, cities need to perform a more effective integration between a wide range of different policies and planning practices. Together with a more effective integration between transport policy and land-use planning, for instance, cities could take growing advantage by organisational factors, as well as the spreading of new technologies and the related processes of social innovation. Through the description of several project and planning initiatives taking place in Palermo, the fifth Italian city, this paper attempts to expl…

Multifunctionality: Epistemic diversity and concept oriented research clusters

2008

International audience; This paper provides a mapping of the different uses of the word multifunctionality. To explore the diversity of meanings and interpretations, a comparative analysis was conducted through five national case studies in France, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Switzerland. The analysis conducted at national level makes it possible to identify eight Concept Oriented Research Clusters (CORCs), based on a relative homogeneity in the research practices, in the research questions addressed, in the concepts used or discussed by scientists to lead their work and in the scientific disciplines, the stream of thought or possibly the epistemic community researchers belong to. Special Issue: Water Management Strategies in Irrigated Areas

2016

The 2015 edition of the United Nations World Water Development Report highlighted that ‘water is at the core of sustainable development’. Water has upgraded the quality of human life, and any progress to achieve a more sustainable world will deal with the maintenance and/or the improvement of water management. Water demand has grown at more than twice the population rate in the XX century. By 2025, it is estimated that about 1.8 billion people will live in countries or regions with absolute water scarcity, and two-thirds of the world population could be under stress conditions.

Homo urbanus. Città e comunità in evoluzione

2022
