Sudomotor testing predicts the presence of neutralizing botulinum A toxin antibodies.

2002

The increasing number of patients being treated with botulinum toxin A complex (BoNT/A) has led to a higher incidence of neutralizing anti-BoNT/A antibodies (ABAs). Because BoNT/A is known to inhibit sweating, here we report sudometry as a possibility for predicting the presence of ABA. Sixteen patients suffering from spasmodic torticollis were selected: in 2 patients, BoNT/A treatment continued to be effective, in 9 patients, the treatment effect was impaired, and in 5 patients, secondary treatment failure developed. BoNT/A (100 mouse units, Dysport; Ipsen Pharma, Berkshire, United Kingdom) was injected subcutaneously into the lateral calves. Sweating was visualized with iodine starch stai…

Stress and thermoregulation: different sympathetic responses and different effects on experimental pain.

2009

Stress and thermoregulation both activate the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) but might differently affect pain. Studies investigating possible interactions in patients are problematic because of the high prevalence of SNS disturbances in patients. We therefore analyzed the influence of these different sympathetic challenges on experimentally-induced pain in healthy subjects. SNS was activated in two different ways: by mental stress (Stroop task, mental arithmetic task), and by thermoregulatory stimulation using a water-perfused thermal suit (7 degrees C, 32 degrees C, or 50 degrees C). Attentional effects of the mental stress tasks were controlled by using easy control tasks. Both, stress…

Gravimetrically Controlled Efficacy of Subcorial Curettage: A Prospective Study for Treatment of Axillary Hyperhidrosis

2002

Botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) proved to be effective for the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis by means of gravimetry. Quantitatively controlled studies for surgical treatment are lacking so far.To prospectively test the efficacy of subcorial axillary curettage by gravimetric evaluation of pre- and postsurgical sweat rates.Conservatively pretreated patients received subcorial curettage under tumescent local anesthesia using a sharp spoon. Sweat rates of each axilla were determined gravimetrically before and 4-8 weeks after surgery. Evaluation was performed with respect to baseline sweat rates greater than 50 mg/min (group A), greater than 25 and less than 50 mg/min (group B), and less than 25…

Changes of Expression of Intermediate Filament Proteins During Ontogenesis of Eccrine Sweat Glands

1992

The intermediate filament expression in fetal and adult human eccrine sweat glands was studied by immunoperoxidase microscopy performed on cryostat sections using monoclonal antibodies against various cytokeratins (CK), vimentin, and actin. In palmar skin of 14-week-old fetuses, the early dermal cords showed a primitive CK pattern similar to that of epidermal basal cells. From week 15 on (distal finger skin), inner cells of the proximal (ductal) portion of the glandular anlagen expressed CK 1/10/11 and 19 (markers of adult eccrine ductal luminal cells). In addition, CK 4 was expressed in ductal luminal cells mainly in the fetal period. In the distal portion of the sweat gland anlagen the in…

Human sweat odour conjugates in human milk, colostrum and amniotic fluid

2012

International audience; Using ultra performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry we identified for the first time glutamine-N-alpha-conjugates of the fatty acids (E)/(Z)-3-methylhex-2-enoic acid and (R)/(S)-3-hydroxy-3-methylhexanoic acid as well as cysteinylglycine-S-conjugates of (R)/(S)-3-methyl-3-sulphanylhexan-1-ol and (R)/(S)-3-sulphanylhexan-1-ol as constituents of human milk and colostrum. The glutamine-N-alpha-conjugates were detected also in human amniotic fluids. The mean values of glutamine-N-alpha-conjugate of (R)/(S)-3-hydroxy-3-methylhexanoic acid were highest in colostrums with a range of <0.1-382 mu g/kg, followed by the mature human milk with values from <0.1 to 39.…

Perspiration versus saliva--basic aspects concerning their use in roadside drug testing.

1999

Various aspects concerning the practical application and forensic interpretation of data obtained by saliva drug testing and drug monitoring from the skin surface are discussed. Basic information on the composition of saliva and skin secretions and their particular transport mechanisms, as far as known, are given. For drugs of abuse secretion into saliva is suggested to be by passive diffusion and to depend on lipid solubility, pKa, plasma protein binding and on the pH of saliva. Drug molecules from blood are considered to reach the skin surface by various routes such as by sweat and sebum as well as by inter- and/or transcellular diffusion. The role of the stratum corneum as a temporary dr…

A novel approach to CFTR mutation testing by pyrosequencing-based assay panels adapted to ethnicities.

2009

Abstract Background: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a common autosomal recessive genetic disorder caused by a variety of sequence alterations in the CFTR gene [cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (ATP-binding cassette sub-family C, member 7)]. Because the relative prevalence of mutations strongly depends on the ethnic background, first-level testing of CF as defined by recent consensus recommendations ought to be adaptable to the ethnicity of patients. Methods: We therefore developed and implemented a diagnostic approach to first-level testing for CF based on published mutation frequencies and Pyrosequencing (PSQ) technology that we complemented with standard procedures of mutation…

Menopausal syndrome limited to hot flushes and sweating a representative survey study.

2017

The menopausal syndrome is described as a series of various physical and nonphysical symptoms attributed to perimenopausal changes in hormone levels. However, evidence is biased by focusing research on the target group of middle aged women only. To overcome this bias, we examined the occurrence of menopausal symptoms during the entire life span in both women and men. Therefore, we studied the occurrence of menopausal symptoms with the widely used Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) across the entire life span in both women and men. To this end, we performed a nationwide cross-sectional survey study in Germany in which we examined a representative sample of 2527 persons aged from 14 to 95 years. Add…

CFTR p.Arg117His associated with CBAVD and other CFTR-related disorders

2013

International audience; BACKGROUND:The high frequency of the cystic fibrosis (CF) transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene mutation p.Arg117His in patients with congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD) and in newborns screened for CF has created a dilemma.METHODS:Phenotypic and genotypic data were retrospectively collected in 179 non-newborn French individuals carrying p.Arg117His and a second CFTR mutation referred for symptoms or family history, by all French molecular genetics laboratories, referring physicians, CF care centres and infertility clinics.RESULTS:97% of the patients had the intronic T7 normal variant in cis with p.Arg117His. 89% patients were male, wit…
