Selective T3–T4 sympathicotomy versus gray ramicotomy on outcome and quality of life in hyperhidrosis patients: a randomized clinical trial

Abstract Background: compensatory hyperhidrosis is the leading cause of patients' dissatisfaction after thoracic sympathicotomy.Objective: to reduce compensatory hyperhidrosis to increase patients' satisfaction. Sudomotor testing predicts the presence of neutralizing botulinum A toxin antibodies.

The increasing number of patients being treated with botulinum toxin A complex (BoNT/A) has led to a higher incidence of neutralizing anti-BoNT/A antibodies (ABAs). Because BoNT/A is known to inhibit sweating, here we report sudometry as a possibility for predicting the presence of ABA. Sixteen patients suffering from spasmodic torticollis were selected: in 2 patients, BoNT/A treatment continued to be effective, in 9 patients, the treatment effect was impaired, and in 5 patients, secondary treatment failure developed. Stress and thermoregulation: different sympathetic responses and different effects on experimental pain.

Stress and thermoregulation both activate the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) but might differently affect pain. Studies investigating possible interactions in patients are problematic because of the high prevalence of SNS disturbances in patients. We therefore analyzed the influence of these different sympathetic challenges on experimentally-induced pain in healthy subjects. SNS was activated in two different ways: by mental stress (Stroop task, mental arithmetic task), and by thermoregulatory stimulation using a water-perfused thermal suit (7 degrees C, 32 degrees C, or 50 degrees C). However, evidence is biased by focusing research on the target group of middle aged women only. Infant developmental profile of Crisponi syndrome due to compound heterozygosity for CRLF1 deletion.

Crisponi syndrome/CISS1, is an autosomal recessive ciliary neurotrophic factor receptor (CNTFR)-related genodermatosis caused in 95% of cases by mutations in CRLF1 on chromosome 19p13. The CNTFR pathway is important for CNS development. Crisponi syndrome/ CISS1 can be suspected in the presence of the following clinical triad: camptodactyly with fisted hands, intermittent hyperthermia and muscular contractions with feeding difficulties.

Enzyme replacement therapy with agalsidase alfa in children with Fabry disease.

Aim: To assess the effects of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) in children with Fabry disease. Methods: Safety and efficacy of ERT with agalsidase alfa, 0.2 mg/kg infused over 40 minutes every 2 weeks for 23 weeks, were studied in a multicentre open-label trial in nine boys and four girls. Median age at the start of the study was 11.0 years (range 3.5–18 years). Results: Fifty-four adverse events were reported in 11 patients. No serious adverse events related to ERT were reported. Botulinum Toxin Type B Blocks Sudomotor Function Effectively: A 6 Month Follow Up

This study analyzes the suppression of sweat gland activity by botulinum toxin type B. We injected botulinum toxin type B (between 2 and 1000 mouse units subcutaneously) in the lateral side of both lower legs in 15 healthy volunteers. Sweat tests were carried out before botulinum toxin type B injections, and at 3 wk, 3 mo, and 6 mo. We studied focal anhidrosis by iodine–starch staining and by capacitance hygrometry after carbachol iontophoresis, according to the quantitative sudomotor axon reflex test (QSART). Summary Although fractures of the condylar neck belong to the most frequent injuries of the jaws, and various nerves are found in close proximity to the temporomandibular joints, only little mention is made in the literature of neurological complications arising from accidents.
