Multivariate regression analysis applied to the calibration of equipment used in pig meat classification in Romania.

2016

This paper highlights the statistical methodology used in a dissection experiment carried out in Romania to calibrate and standardize two classification devices, OptiGrade PRO (OGP) and Fat-o-Meat'er (FOM). One hundred forty-five carcasses were measured using the two probes and dissected according to the European reference method. To derive prediction formulas for each device, multiple linear regression analysis was performed on the relationship between the reference lean meat percentage and the back fat and muscle thicknesses, using the ordinary least squares technique. The root mean squared error of prediction calculated using the leave-one-out cross validation met European Commission (EC…

Bioavailability in vivo of naltrexone following transbuccal administration by an electronically-controlled intraoral device: a trial on pigs.

2010

Naltrexone (NLX), an opioid antagonist, is widely used in the treatment of opiate addiction, alcoholism and smoking cessation. Its current peroral administration induces various adverse side effects and has limited efficacy since bioavailability and patient compliance are poor. The development of a long-acting drug delivery system of NLX may overcome the current drawbacks and help in the improvement of treatment of addiction. The primary endpoints of this study were: a) to compare the NLX bioavailability and pharmacokinetics after delivering a single transbuccal dose, released by a prototype of intraoral device, versus an intravenous (I.V.) bolus of the same drug dose; b) to verify the func…

Release of naltrexone on buccal mucosa: Permeation studies, histological aspects and matrix system design

2007

Transbuccal drug delivery has got several well-known advantages especially with respect to peroral way. Since a major limitation in buccal drug delivery could be the low permeability of the epithelium, the aptitude of NLX to penetrate the mucosal barrier was assessed. Ex vivo permeation across porcine buccal mucosa 800 microm thick was investigated using Franz type diffusion cells and compared with in vitro data previously obtained by reconstituted human oral epithelium 100 microm thick. Both fluxes (Js) and permeability coefficients (K(p)) are in accordance, using either buffer solution simulating saliva or natural human saliva. Permeation was evaluated also in presence of chemical enhance…

Mini-laparoscopy, laparoendoscopic single-site surgery and natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery-assisted laparoscopy : novice surgeons’ pe…

2012

Study Type--Therapy (case series) Level of Evidence 4. What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? Over the last few years, minimally invasive urological surgery has evolved towards less invasive, 'scarless' procedures. New surgical concepts, such as those of natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) and laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) have been introduced. Mini-laparoscopy has been rediscovered in an attempt to reduce the invasiveness of standard laparoscopy. This study is the first to compare the perception of surgeons when first facing three different scarless options for performing a porcine nephrectomy and when dealing with the constraints of eac…

Xenotransplantation of parathyroids in rats using barium-alginate and polyacrylic acid multilayer microcapsules

2001

The integrity and function of encapsulated parathyroid tissue following xenotransplantation is limited by oxygen and nutrition supply and capsule fibrosis. Since some of these factors depend on stability and biocompatibility of the coating material, multilayer microcapsules have been developed. Parathyroid tissue pieces and digested single cells from pigs were encapsulated in barium-alginate and in polyacrylic acid (PAA) multilayer capsules. After 7 days of culture the function of the encapsulated cells were assessed. Subsequently, in a part of the cultured microcapsules the viability was directly assessed whereas the other part was transplanted in dark animal [DA] rats for 30 days. After e…

Evaluation of the healing of precoated vascular dacron prostheses.

1991

Knitted and woven Dacron grafts commercially coated with bovine collagen, gelatin and human albumin were implanted end-to-side between the infrarenal aorta and the bifurcation in 35 growing pigs. Grafts were explanted after 4, 8 and 12 weeks and compared to 6 uncoated knitted prostheses preclotted with blood that served as a control. Uncoated grafts rapidly developed a firmly attached neointima lined with endothelium. Compared with coated grafts the thrombus-free area of uncoated grafts was significantly larger (P less than 0.05). The slow resorption of albumin resulted in a delayed and incomplete neointimal healing and failing graft incorporation. Although the bovine collagen was only mini…

Low-frequency extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy improves renal pelvic stone disintegration in a pig model.

2009

OBJECTIVE To compare disintegration rates for renal stones treated by 60 vs 120 shock waves (SW)/min at the same energy settings, using standardized validated artificial stones in a pig model. MATERIALS AND METHODS Gypsum artificial stones (13 × 6 mm) were inserted into the renal pelvis on either side of 12 anaesthetized pigs by open surgery. Extracorporeal SW lithotripsy (ESWL) was applied using a new electromagnetic lithotripter (Lithoskop®, Siemens AG Healthcare, Munich, Germany) at 60 and 120 SW/min; 3000 SW were applied to each kidney with the same energy settings. Stone fragments were collected after nephrectomy, passed through calibrated test sieves, and weighed. Fragment size catego…

Deliberate Arterial Hypotension Does Not Reduce Intraocular Pressure in Pigs

1992

Among the accepted advantages of general anesthesia in ophthalmic surgery is improved control of intraocular pressure (IOP). Although standard textbooks advocate deliberate arterial hypotension to facilitate intraocular surgery by reducing IOP, scientific proof of such an effect is lacking. The authors investigated effects of induced arterial hypotension on IOP in an anesthetized porcine model. Forty-two piglets were anesthetized with piritramide, were placed in the prone position, and had the anterior chamber of one eye punctured with a small Teflon cannula to measure IOP. Six pigs were used in a pilot study to establish dose-response relationships for the hypotensive agents; 36 pigs were …

A novel technique to follow fast PaO2 variations during experimental CPR

2003

An ultrafast responding fluorescent-quenching PO2 probe allows time-resolved, in vivo measurement of PO2. This study describes several validation experiments of this new device in vitro, and reports its first use during cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an animal model of cardiac arrest. The influence of CO2, temperature and motion artefacts on the signal response of the PO2 probe was analysed in vitro by systematic variation of these values. Thereafter, with approval of the Review Board for the care and use of animals, CPR was performed in four pigs. The PaO2 course was recorded continuously at time resolution of80 ms in the abdominal aorta using an uncoated fluorescence-quenching probe (Fox…
