Managing the paradox of unwanted efficiency : The symbolic legitimation of the hypermarket format in Finland, 1960–1975

Occasionally, organisations are forced to adopt new practices that are inconsistent with the expectations of their stakeholders. An immediate adoption of the practices would risk the organisation’s legitimacy, but as previous research has noted, the perceptions of organisational stakeholders can be managed through symbolic actions. In this article, I examine how actors from four retail organisations symbolically legitimated the adoption of the hypermarket format within their individual contexts by means of internal professional magazines. Fabio Ciaramelli’s book L’ordine simbolico della legge e il problema del metodo proposes a convincing methodological perspective for legal knowledge in contemporary constitutional democracies. The central claim is that a middle path between strong objectivism and absolute discretion exists. Ciaramelli thinks that the key concept for legal methodology is that of “symbolic order”. In this paper I deal with this notion and try to emphasize some features of it from a perspective slightly different from Ciaramelli’s one.

Pro- gradu tutkielmassani haluan tuoda kielitieteen ”vaihdin”- käsitteen osaksi visuaalisen analyysin työkaluja. Keskityn tutkielmassani maalaustaiteeseen. ”Vaihdin” on kielitieteissä sana, jonka merkitys voi muuttua erilaiseksi, vaikka sen syntaksi pysyisi samana. Käsitteen lanseeraajaksi on nimetty tanskalainen kielitieteilijä Otto Jespersen, mutta se on esiintynyt myös venäläisen Roman Jakobsonin teksteissä. The author focuses on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales which, in her opinion, became a cultural phenomenon because of ending the civilisation of archetypes, metaphysical and existential truths dating back to the „kindergarten of mankind”. The centre of the article is the motif of death. almost omnipresent in the Danish writer’s works. Death will not spare anyone - this is the thesis argued by the author based on analysis of selected fairy tales by Andersen.

Abstract The new concepts of the ‘covariance matrix normalization’ and the ‘cascade’ structure of the adaptive least-squares estimator are shown to generalize and extend the use of internal information feedback in various robustness/alertness-oriented modifications to the standard ALS estimation algorithm.
