Protein knot server: detection of knots in protein structures

2007

KNOTS (http://knots.mit.edu) is a web server that detects knots in protein structures. Several protein structures have been reported to contain intricate knots. The physiological role of knots and their effect on folding and evolution is an area of active research. The user submits a PDB id or uploads a 3D protein structure in PDB or mmCIF format. The current implementation of the server uses the Alexander polynomial to detect knots. The results of the analysis that are presented to the user are the location of the knot in the structure, the type of the knot and an interactive visualization of the knot. The results can also be downloaded and viewed offline. The server also maintains a regul…

Symbolic threat fosters right-wing authoritarianism only among low authoritarians

2014

In a sample of 95 U.S. undergraduates (49.5% women, Mage = 20.99 years, SD = 3.48), we analyzed the effects of symbolic threat on right-wing authoritarianism (RWA). We used data from an experimental study in which negative political attacks on one's own favorite candidate were considered as symbolic threats. A hierarchic moderated regression showed that, as with societal threat, symbolic threat fostered an increase in RWA only among participants with low initial scores on RWA. This increase did not depend on the persuasive effect of being exposed to negative campaigning. The implications, limitations, and possible developments of the research are discussed. © 2014 Cises.

Algebraic Curves and Riemann Surfaces in Matlab

2010

In the previous chapter, a detailed description of the algorithms for the ‘algcurves’ package in Maple was presented. As discussed there, the package is able to handle general algebraic curves with coefficients given as exact arithmetic expressions, a restriction due to the use of exact integer arithmetic. Coefficients in terms of floating point numbers, i.e., the representation of decimal numbers of finite length on a computer, can in principle be handled, but the floating point numbers have to be converted to rational numbers. This can lead to technical difficulties in practice. One also faces limitations if one wants to study families of Riemann surfaces, where the coefficients in the al…

Knots, Music and DNA

2020

Musical gestures connect the symbolic layer of the score to the physical layer of sound. I focus here on the mathematical theory of musical gestures, and I propose its generalization to include braids and knots. In this way, it is possible to extend the formalism to cover more case studies, especially regarding conducting gestures. Moreover, recent developments involving comparisons and similarities between gestures of orchestral musicians can be contextualized in the frame of braided monoidal categories. Because knots and braids can be applied to both music and biology (they apply to knotted proteins, for example), I end the article with a new musical rendition of DNA.

EUROPEAN CONVERGENCE AND ITS IMPACT ON THE SOCIAL STRATEGY OF LATVIA

2014

The purpose of this study is to introduce evaluation of convergence policy activities in the European Union and to designate social development trends of Latvia in the context of reaching the goals of strategy “Europe 2020. The aim of the research has set the following tasks: to introduce the main EU social convergence theory investigations as the development challenges for improvement socio-economic well-being of the EU states; to evaluate current social situation and eventual social strategy of Latvia on 2014-2020; to estimate European convergence policy impact on the social development of Latvia. The strategic goals of EU policy are discussed as well as the development challenges for imp…

Clubes y selecciones nacionales de fútbol. La dimensión etnoterritorial del fútbol español

2006

The first part of this paper shows, from a general viewpoint, the historical simultaneity in the emergence and development of football and the building of modern Nation-States, as well as their next differentiation in the socio-economical context of globalization. This differentiation or institutional separation implies an alteration and readjustment of the identity dynamic associated to this sport. Above this historical and conceptual background we consider a research on the ethnoterritorial dimension of the Spanish football. After dedicating the second part of the article to study some ethnoterritorial keys of his historic development, in the third part we present the analysis of the Span…

Bases for induced characters

1996

AbstractIf G is a finite solvable group, we show that Isaacs' theory on partial characters on Hall π-subgroups can be developed for the nilpotent injectors of G. Therefore, the irreducible characters of G are partitioned into blocks associated to some nilpotent subgroups of G.

Riso e sorriso e altri saggi sulla nonviolenza nella Grecia antica

2018

Is nonviolence a specificity of oriental culture? The book explores the presence, in ancient Greece, of forms of thought and actions that can be brought back to the idea of nonviolent conflict management. It identifies the role that laughter and smile can play in the resolution of interpersonal contrasts; it illustrates the advice of ‘work on oneself’ as well as on the other, given by ancient philosophers; it focuses on some rules to combat violence without resorting to violence; it presents female mediation practices and identifies various forms of diplomacy, both from above and from below; at least it shows the effective dynamics in view of the reconciliation between adversaries in cases …

A code to calculate (high order) Bessel functions based on the continued fractions method

1993

Abstract We have developed a fast code to calculate Bessel functions of integer and fractional order based on the continued fractions method. This algorithm is specially useful in the case of Bessel functions of high order because it does not require any recalculation using normalization relations.
