We propose a topological characterization of Hamiltonians describing classical waves. Applying it to the magnetostatic surface spin waves that are important in spintronics applications, we settle the speculation over their topological origin. For a class of classical systems that includes spin waves driven by dipole-dipole interactions, we show that the topology is characterized by vortex lines in the Brillouin zone in such a way that the symplectic structure of Hamiltonian mechanics plays an essential role. The Complete Solution of the Classical SL(2,ℝ/U(1) Gauged WZNW Field Theory

We prove that any gauged WZNW model has a Lax pair representation, and give explicitly the general solution of the classical equations of motion of the SL(2,R)/U(1) theory. We calculate the symplectic structure of this solution by solving a differential equation of the Gelfand-Dikii type with initial state conditions at infinity, and transform the canonical physical fields non-locally onto canonical free fields. The results will, finally, be collected in a local B\"acklund transformation. These calculations prepare the theory for an exact canonical quantization.
Real symplectic formulation of local special geometry

We consider a formulation of local special geometry in terms of Darboux special coordinates $P^I=(p^i,q_i)$, $I=1,...,2n$. A general formula for the metric is obtained which is manifestly $\mathbf{Sp}(2n,\mathbb{R})$ covariant. Unlike the rigid case the metric is not given by the Hessian of the real function $S(P)$ which is the Legendre transform of the imaginary part of the holomorphic prepotential. Rather it is given by an expression that contains $S$, its Hessian and the conjugate momenta $S_I=\frac{\partial S}{\partial P^I}$. Only in the one-dimensional case ($n=1$) is the real (two-dimensional) metric proportional to the Hessian with an appropriate conformal factor.
The Schouten - Nijenhuis bracket, cohomology and generalized Poisson structures

Newly introduced generalized Poisson structures based on suitable skew-symmetric contravariant tensors of even order are discussed in terms of the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket. The associated `Jacobi identities' are expressed as conditions on these tensors, the cohomological contents of which is given. In particular, we determine the linear generalized Poisson structures which can be constructed on the dual spaces of simple Lie algebras.
Conifold Transitions and Mirror Symmetry for Calabi-Yau Complete Intersections in Grassmannians

In this paper we show that conifold transitions between Calabi-Yau 3-folds can be used for the construction of mirror manifolds and for the computation of the instanton numbers of rational curves on complete intersection Calabi-Yau 3-folds in Grassmannians. Using a natural degeneration of Grassmannians $G(k,n)$ to some Gorenstein toric Fano varieties $P(k,n)$ with conifolds singularities which was recently described by Sturmfels, we suggest an explicit mirror construction for Calabi-Yau complete intersections $X \subset G(k,n)$ of arbitrary dimension. Tracing symmetries and their breakdown through phases of heterotic (2,2) compactifications

We are considering the class of heterotic $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds with 9 fields corresponding to $A_1^9$ Gepner models. We classify all of its Abelian discrete quotients and obtain 152 inequivalent models closed under mirror symmetry with $\mathcal{N}=1,2$ and $4$ supersymmetry in 4D. We compute the full massless matter spectrum at the Fermat locus and find a universal relation satisfied by all models. In addition we give prescriptions of how to compute all quantum numbers of the 4D states including their discrete R-symmetries. Non-extremal black holes of N = 2, d = 4 supergravity

We propose a generic recipe for deforming extremal black holes into non-extremal black holes and we use it to find and study the non-extremal black-hole solutions of several N=2,d=4 supergravity models (SL(2,R)/U(1), CPn and STU with four charges). In all the cases considered, the non-extremal family of solutions smoothly interpolates between all the different extremal limits, supersymmetric and not supersymmetric. This fact can be used to find explicitly extremal non-supersymmetric solutions in the cases in which the attractor mechanism does not completely fix the values of the scalars on the event horizon and they still depend on the boundary conditions at spatial infinity. Observations on the Darboux coordinates for rigid special geometry

We exploit some relations which exist when (rigid) special geometry is formulated in real symplectic special coordinates $P^I=(p^\Lambda,q_\Lambda), I=1,...,2n$. The central role of the real $2n\times 2n$ matrix $M(\Re \mathcal{F},\Im \mathcal{F})$, where $\mathcal{F} = \partial_\Lambda\partial_\Sigma F$ and $F$ is the holomorphic prepotential, is elucidated in the real formalism. The property $M\Omega M=\Omega$ with $\Omega$ being the invariant symplectic form is used to prove several identities in the Darboux formulation. N=2 Super-Higgs, N=1 Poincare' Vacua and Quaternionic Geometry

In the context of N=2 supergravity we explain the occurrence of partial super-Higgs with vanishing vacuum energy and moduli stabilization in a model suggested by superstring compactifications on type IIB orientifolds with 3-form fluxes. The gauging of axion symmetries of the quaternionic manifold, together with the use of degenerate symplectic sections for special geometry, are the essential ingredients of the construction.
