New insights into symptomatic or silent atrial fibrillation complicating acute myocardial infarction
2015
International audience; Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most frequent heart rhythm disorder in the general population and contributes not only to a major deterioration in quality of life but also to an increase in cardiovascular morbimortality. The onset of AF in the acute phase of myocardial infarction (MI) is a major event that can jeopardize the prognosis of patients in the short-, medium- and long-term, and is a powerful predictor of a poor prognosis after MI. The suspected mechanism underlying the excess mortality is the drop in coronary flow linked to the acceleration and arrhythmic nature of the left ventricular contractions, which reduce the left ventricular ejection fraction. The p…
Laparoscopic treatment of a large pedunculated hemangioma of the liver: a case report
2016
Hepatic hemangiomas are the most common benign tumors of the liver, often asymptomatic and discovered incidentally. A 62-year-old woman was referred to our Institution under the suspicion of having an 8 cm-sized GIST. Due to the atypical features of the lesion on TC scan, a biopsy was performed. We report the case of pedunculated hepatic hemangioma with the aim to discuss the diagnostic approach, the possible causes of misdiagnosis and the opportunity of the laparoscopic approach.

Multimodalities imaging in diagnosis of pericardial cyst
2015
Pericardial cysts, an uncommon benign congenital anomaly belonging to the category of mediastinal masses. Cysts are usually detected incidentally on chest radiography or echocardiography, being most patients asymptomatic. In some cases, however, symptoms and complications occur, like dyspnea, chest pain, or persistent cough. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are the imaging techniques of choice to diagnose pericardial cysts. The removal of pericardial cysts is restricted to the cases with an uncertain diagnosis or in the presence of symptoms.
Multiple pulmonary and multivesicular interatrial septum hydatid cysts in a native italian patient
2008
Multivesicular, pulmonary and cardiac hydatidosis are rarely observed and can give rise to serious complications. Cysts can remain asymptomatic for a long time, until they reveal themselves perforating into cardiac chambers and/or pulmonary arteries or the systemic circulation. A rare case of multivesicular interatrial septum hydatid cyst with multiple pulmonary involvement in a native Italian farm labourer is reported. Clinical, radiological, serological and histological findings are described. MR imaging showed the exact anatomic location and the multivesicular nature of the cardiac cyst and was useful in planning surgical treatment. A successful outcome was achieved with a combination of…
Retroperitoneal neuroblastomas - a single institution experience in 90 patients
2007
Purpose Nowadays neuroblastomas are detected incidentally by ultrasound in early stages. Primary surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy are treatment options. However, the approach in babies is controversial. A surveillance strategy is propagated by some groups. In this retrospective study, we evaluated age and stage at diagnosis, therapy and outcome of patients treated at our institutions since 1970. Material and methods 90 patients with retroperitoneal neuroblastomas were treated. They were divided into 2 groups according to age at time of diagnosis: 1 year. Results 40 patients were 1 year (1- 18 years). Detection of an asymptomatic tumour: 1 year 10%. Tumor stage at diagnosis > 1 y…
Psychological Factors in Childhood Asthma
1994
The influence of the personality of asthmatic children and their mothers on the course of their illness is analysed, taking as a basis a sample of 48 asthmatic children. This is done through the assessment of the role of personality in the change that takes place, after the application of various psychological treatments (relaxation, systematic desensitization and stress inoculation) in three variables: number of days of illness, symptomatic relief drug use and school absences. The results obtained highlight the influence of personality on therapeutic success. Consequently, this study shows the importance of tending to personality traits in order to forecast and improve the effectiveness of…
Lipoma of the fossa femoralis mimicking a femoral hernia. Report of 2 cases
2018
Highlights • Femoral lipoma can be mistaken with femoral hernia. • Differential diagnosis between femoral lipoma and femoral hernia can result challenging. • The occurrence of femoral pain can lead to misinterpretation of the symptoms.
SARS-CoV-2 Viral Load, IFNλ Polymorphisms and the Course of COVID-19: An Observational Study
2020
The course of SARS-CoV-2 infection ranges from asymptomatic to a multiorgan disease. In this observational study, we investigated SARS-CoV-2 infected subjects with defined outcomes, evaluating the relationship between viral load and single nucleotide polymorphisms of genes codifying for IFN&lambda
Pulmonary function abnormalities in respiratory asymptomatic patients with inflammatory bowel disease
2002
BACKGROUND: There is evidence that pulmonary function abnormalities are present in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The aim of this crossover study was to assess the frequency of pulmonary dysfunction in patients with IBD and to define the importance of possible confounding factors. METHODS: We investigated a total of 44 patients with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis and no pulmonary symptoms or a history of respiratory diseases by means of pulmonary function testing and chest X-ray. As controls we examined 44 healthy subjects matched for gender, age, and smoking status. RESULTS: A total of 21% of the subjects with ulcerative colitis and 20% with Crohn's disease showed a…
