Self-Localization of Distributed Microphone Arrays Using Directional Statistics with DoA Estimation Reliability

2019

This paper addresses the problem of self-localization of distributed microphone arrays from microphone recordings by following a two-step optimization procedure. In the first step, the relative geometry of the sources and arrays is inferred by the proposed maximum likelihood estimator. It is derived under the assumption that the acquired unit-norm vectors pointing towards the unknown source positions follow a von Mises-Fisher distribution in a D-dimensional space. In the second step, the absolute positions and synchronization offsets between the arrays are estimated from the inferred relative geometry by using the Least Squares procedure. To improve the accuracy of the method, we propose as…

Geochemical Interactions of Plutonium with Opalinus Clay Studied by Spatially Resolved Synchrotron Radiation Techniques

2017

Plutonium plays an important role within nuclear waste materials because of its long half-life and high radiotoxicity. The aim of this study was to investigate with high spatial resolution the reactivity of the more oxidized forms of Pu(V,VI) within Opalinus Clay (OPA) rock, a heterogeneous, natural argillaceous rock considered as a potential repository host. A combination of synchrotron based X-ray microprobe and bulk techniques was used to study the spatial distribution and molecular speciation of Pu within OPA after diffusion and sorption processes. Microscopic chemical images revealed a pronounced impact of geochemical heterogeneities concerning the reactivity of the natural barrier mat…

A space-division time-division multiple access scheme for high throughput provisioning in WLANs

2005

Directional antennas may dramatically increase the capacity of a Wireless LAN by allowing several stations to simultaneously communicate. Since deployment of directive/smart antennas on the customer's terminals is awkward (for technological, cost, robustness, and convenience reasons) it is of interest to deploy advanced antenna solutions only at the Access Point. When omnidirectional transmissions are used at the Mobile Stations, the asynchronous nature of the 802.11 MAC handshake structurally limits the possibility to exploit spatial reuse. Significant throughput enhancements can be achieved only at the expense of redesigning (part of) the 802.11 MAC protocol: mainly a form of synchronizat…

Predictive analysis of Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy response by means of the ECG

2016

Aims: Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) is an effective treatment for heart failure patients with moderate to severe symptoms. Unfortunately, a significant proportion of patients (up to 35%) do not respond to CRT (patients called "non-responders"). This results in a large cost-effectiveness relation for heart failure treatment. This study aims to assess the prediction response to CRT by means of analysing the ECG. Methods: We retrospectively analysed the surface ECG and QRS previous to CRT implantation in 45 consecutive patients with dilated (27) or ischemic (18) cardiomyopathy. We extracted the QRS and then processed a measure of energy of a discrete version of the Stockwell Transfor…

Infanticide in the evolution of reproductive synchrony: effects on reproductive success.

2007

Synchronous breeding in animals and plants has stimulated both a theoretical and empirical examination of the possible benefits of active synchronization. The selective pressures of predation and infanticide are the strongest candidates proposed to explain the evolution of reproductive synchrony. Alternatively, breeding asynchronously with conspecifics may ensure a greater availability of resources per breeder. However, the possible fitness benefits resulting from active asynchronization have not yet received attention in evolutionary ecology. Here we present a hypothesis, based on a graphical model, illustrating the costs and benefits of the two modes of reproduction. We tested the hypothe…

Synthesis and characterization of indium oxide at high pressures

2018

Multithreaded Translation of Ptolemy II Designs on Multicore Platforms

2008

Ptolemy II is an open source environment for system design and test based on component data flow. This paradigm tries to make parallel systems more deterministic and understandable. In this work we propose a technique to translate designs developed with Ptolemy II, into multithreaded Java implementations on multicore platforms. We have chosen Java mainly because Ptolemy II is implemented in Java and then we get direct code reuse. The counterpart is a certain amount of overhead that we expect to be less relevant as Java runtime environment will evolve. The main goals are to produce efficient parallel simulators and software devices with competitive performance level. We show by means of an e…

Quantitative study of cardiac wall motion from cine-MRI using frequency-based optical flow methods

2010

The aim of this thesis is to study parietal desynchronisation of the left ventricle from conventional cine-MRI. The first part of our work consisted in the quantification of the left ventricle wall motion of the heart directly from conventional retrospective SSFP type cine-MRI sequences used in the study of cardiac function. The developed methods for measuring displacements within the images are frequency-based optical flow methods. These techniques seem to be particularly adapted to MRI specificities. We have demonstrated their robustness in the event of Rician noise and pixel intensity variations as a function of time. These variations are often associated with the through-plane motion of…

A Web-Oriented Java3D Talking Head

2009

Facial animation denotes all those systems performing speech synchro- nization with an animated face model. These kinds of systems are named Talking Heads or Talking Faces. At the same time simple dialogue systems called chatbots have been developed. Chatbots are software agents able to interact with users through pattern-matching based rules. In this paper a Talking Head oriented to the creation of a Chatbot is presented. An answer is generated in form of text trig- gered by an input query. The answer is converted into a facial animation using a 3D face model whose lips movements are synchronized with the sound produced by a speech synthesis module. Our Talking Head exploits the naturalnes…
