Switching Reciprocity On and Off in a Magneto-Optical X-Ray Scattering Experiment Using Nuclear Resonance ofα−Fe57Foils

2012

Reciprocity is when the scattering amplitude of wave propagation satisfies a symmetry property, connecting a scattering process with an appropriate reversed one. We report on an experiment using nuclear resonance scattering of synchrotron radiation, which demonstrates that magneto-optical materials do not necessarily violate reciprocity. The setting enables us to switch easily between reciprocity and its violation. In the latter case, the exhibited reciprocity violation is orders of magnitude larger than achieved by previous wave scattering experiments.

High-power production targets for the Super-FRS using a fast extraction scheme

2003

Abstract The high-power production target of the Super-FRS [H. Geissel et al., these Proceedings] will be irradiated by very intense heavy-ion beams which will be delivered from the future SIS100/200 [An International Accelerator Facility for Beams of Ions and Antiprotons, GSI-Report, 2001] synchrotron facility at the Gesellschaft fur Schwerionenforschung (GSI) Darmstadt. This paper presents calculations of the thermodynamic and the hydrodynamic response of such a target, considering that a uranium ion beam with an energy of 1 GeV/u and an intensity of 10 12 particles will impinge within 50 ns on a solid carbon target with a thickness of 4 g/cm 2 . Due to the high beam intensity the target …

Recent results from the ATLAS SCT irradiation programme

2000

Abstract The irradiation facility at the CERN proton synchrotron, set up to irradiate full-size prototypes of silicon microstrip detectors for the ATLAS semiconductor tracker, is described and measurements of the detector currents during irradiation are reported. The detector dark currents can be described by bulk radiation damage models demonstrating the radiation hardness of the detector design and allowing the current damage factor α and the acceptor introduction term β to be determined. Results from testbeam studies of a module with an irradiated detector and binary readout in a magnetic field and with the beam incident over a range of angles are reported. The hit efficiency and spatial…

Beam study of irradiated ATLAS-SCT prototypes

2002

Abstract Prototypes of ATLAS-SCT modules with ABCD readout chips were tested in a 4 GeV/c pion beam at KEK's proton synchrotron. Of both SCT module geometries—barrel and forward—three identical modules were placed in the beam. One module of each type had been irradiated to 3×1014 protons/cm2 in the CERN PS previous to the beam test. A method has been developed to reconstruct the time-resolved shaper pulse from the binary hit information, allowing a more detailed study of the timing properties of the ABCD. The present results will be compared to a simulation of the charge collection and Front End electronics response.

Time-of-flight photoelectron emission microscopy TOF-PEEM: first results

1998

The time structure of the synchrotron radiation at BESSY (Berlin) is used to operate a photoemission electron microscope in a time-of-flight (TOF) mode. The electrons which are emitted from the sample surface with different energies are dispersed in a drift tube subsequent to the imaging optics. The screen of the microscope was replaced by a fast scintillator (tau = 1.4 ns) and the light is detected by an ultra fast gated intensified CCD camera (800 ps gate 1 MHz repetition rate). The resolving power in the energy domain is demonstrated and possible implications on the spatial resolution (chromatic correction) are discussed. Additionally, an improved contrast at very low emission energies i…

Design and commissioning of the GSI pion beam

2002

We describe the design of the secondary pion beam-line installed at the SIS 18Tm synchrotron at GSI, Darmstadt, and discuss the commissioning results. The experiments were performed with proton and C-12 primary beams at several energies using beryllium production targets. Pion yields in a momentum range between 0.4 and 2.8 GeV/c were identified, At the highest primary beam energies of 3.5 GeV for proton and 2.0 A GeV for carbon ions, the latter beam produces the highest low-momentum pion yield while at momenta of 1.5 GeV/c the yields are comparable and at 2.8 GeV/c the proton beam is superior. A momentum resolution of around 0.5% is achieved and the time resolution (a) ranges from 100 to 15…

Studies of high density baryon matter with high intensity heavy-ion beams at J-PARC

2016

Abstract In J-PARC heavy-ion project, we aim at studies of QCD phase structures and hadron properties in high baryon density close to the neutron star core. We have developed a heavy-ion acceleration scheme with a new linac and a new booster with existing two synchrotrons with the goal beam rate of about 10 11 Hz. We have also designed a large acceptance spectrometer based on a toroidal magnet. We have evaluated the spectrometer performance, and demonstrated reconstructing dielectron and dimuon spectra with full detector simulations. Finally, we designed a hypernuclear spectrometer which can utilize the full intensity ion beams.

Novel optical interferometry of synchrotron radiation for absolute electron beam energy measurements

2018

Abstract A novel interferometric method is presented for the measurement of the absolute energy of electron beams. In the year 2016, a pioneering experiment was performed using a 195 MeV beam of the Mainz Microtron (MAMI). The experimental setup consisted of two collinear magnetic undulators as sources of coherent optical synchrotron light and a high-resolving grating monochromator. Beam energy measurements required the variation of the relative undulator distance in the decimeter range and the analysis of the intensity oscillation length in the interference spectrum. A statistical precision of 1 keV was achieved in 1 h of data taking, while systematic uncertainties of 700 keV were present …
