Towards controlling PCDD/F production in a multi-fuel fired BFB boiler using two sulfur addition strategies. Part II: Thermodynamic analysis

2014

Abstract A staged equilibrium process model was developed for a bubbling fluidized bed boiler firing SRF, bark and sludge. The model was used to study the influence of sulfur addition strategies (S-pellet additive and peat co-firing) on the behavior of copper, bromine, and alkalis. Aerosol samples collected from the backpass of the boiler were used to validate the chemistry predicted by the model. The model revealed that Cu existed as Cu 2 S (s3) in the reducing zone, and CuCl (g) (for all test cases) and CuO (s) (during peat co-firing) in the oxidation zones. CuBr 3(g) was also present after the introduction of tertiary air. However the model failed to predict the formation of CuSO 4 , an …

Biosynthesis of Sinapigladioside, an Antifungal Isothiocyanate from Burkholderia Symbionts

2021

Abstract Sinapigladioside is a rare isothiocyanate‐bearing natural product from beetle‐associated bacteria (Burkholderia gladioli) that might protect beetle offspring against entomopathogenic fungi. The biosynthetic origin of sinapigladioside has been elusive, and little is known about bacterial isothiocyanate biosynthesis in general. On the basis of stable‐isotope labeling, bioinformatics, and mutagenesis, we identified the sinapigladioside biosynthesis gene cluster in the symbiont and found that an isonitrile synthase plays a key role in the biosynthetic pathway. Genome mining and network analyses indicate that related gene clusters are distributed across various bacterial phyla including…

Insect-associated bacteria assemble the antifungal butenolide gladiofungin by non-canonical polyketide chain termination

2020

Abstract Genome mining of one of the protective symbionts (Burkholderia gladioli) of the invasive beetle Lagria villosa revealed a cryptic gene cluster that codes for the biosynthesis of a novel antifungal polyketide with a glutarimide pharmacophore. Targeted gene inactivation, metabolic profiling, and bioassays led to the discovery of the gladiofungins as previously‐overlooked components of the antimicrobial armory of the beetle symbiont, which are highly active against the entomopathogenic fungus Purpureocillium lilacinum. By mutational analyses, isotope labeling, and computational analyses of the modular polyketide synthase, we found that the rare butenolide moiety of gladiofungins deriv…

Investigation of Diketopiperazines Containing a Guanidino-Functionalized Sidechain as Potential Catalysts of Enantioselective Strecker Reactions

2005

Diketopiperazine 1 consisting of L-(γ-guanidino-α-amino)butyric acid and L-phenylalanine was synthesized as the hydroacetate and as the hydronitrate. Its structure was confirmed by X-ray analysis. In contrast to reports in the literature (Lipton et al.), compound 1 does not induce enantioselevtive catalysis of Strecker reactions. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Sexes in gynodioeciousGeranium sylvaticumdo not differ in their isotopic signature or photosynthetic capacity

2017

• In gynodioecious plants, females are expected to produce more or better seeds than hermaphrodites in order to be maintained within the same population. Even though rarely measured, higher seed production can be achieved through differences in physiology. • In this work, we measured sexual dimorphism in several physiological traits in the gynodioecious plant Geranium sylvaticum. Photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductivity, transpiration rate, water use efficiency and isotopic signatures were measured in plants growing in two habitats differing in light availability. • Females have been reported to produce more seeds than hermaphrodites. However, we did not observe any significant difference…

MILES extended: Stellar population synthesis models from the optical to the infrared

2016

We present the first single-burst stellar population models which covers the optical and the infrared wavelength range between 3500 and 50000 Angstrom and which are exclusively based on empirical stellar spectra. To obtain these joint models, we combined the extended MILES models in the optical with our new infrared models that are based on the IRTF (Infrared Telescope Facility) library. The latter are available only for a limited range in terms of both age and metallicity. Our combined single-burst stellar population models were calculated for ages larger than 1 Gyr, for metallicities between [Fe/H] = -0.40 and 0.26, for initial mass functions of various types and slopes, and on the basis …

Synthesis, Characterization, Thermal and Antimicrobial studies of N-substituted Sulfanilamide derivatives

2014

Abstract Four sulfanilamide derivatives N -[4-(phenylsulfamoyl)phenyl]acetamide (1), 4-amino- N -phenylbenzenesulfonamide (2), N -[4-(phenylsulfamoyl)phenyl]benzamide (3) and N -{4-[(3-chlorophenyl)sulfamoyl]phenylbenzamide (4) were synthesized and characterized by Infra-Red (IR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and UV–visible (UV–Vis) spectra. Also Liquid Chromatographic (LCMS) and High Resolution Mass Spectrometric (HRMS) methods were used. Crystal structures of 1–4 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) and their conformational and hydrogen bond (HB) network properties were examined with survey of the literature data. Compounds 1 and 2 crystallize in the same orthorho…
