Acoustic characterization of the ancient theatre at Syracuse

The ancient theatre at Syracuse, the largest open air theatre in Sicily, experienced many structural changes along its history. Today its very renowned drama festival attracts visitors from all the world that fill the entire cavea: customized seats accomodation and a prominent stage play an important role in the theatre acoustics. Because no data were available in literature on its acoustical perfomance a measurement session was carried out by our team in the framework of a wide research project on ancient theatres acoustics in the modern use. The analysis focuses on the figure of Hieron, a Syracusan tyrant who met with mixed fortune in scholarly studies. Often compared with his brother Gelon, the second of the Deinomenides was seen as a rapacious and violent tyrant. We here reconsider the testimonies on Hieron in order to find out to what extent that judgement actually corresponds to the image which the tradition of Antiquity gave of the tyrant. The case of Hieron offers above all an opportunity to examine the lines which oriented the studies on tyranny in Sicily and to provide an outline of the latest prospects of research. Le Ninfe nell’arte di Siracusa

L’articolo mira a individuare il ruolo delle Ninfe e dell’immaginario ‘ninfale’ a Siracusa, che resta sottostimato nonostante le monete cittadine adottino come emblema civico la Ninfa locale Arethousa dal tardo VI al tardo IV sec. a.C. Ciò è dovuto alla difficoltà di riconoscimento delle Ninfe attraverso criteri iconografici univoci, salvo alcune raffigurazioni triadiche sui pinakes votivi ellenistici. Two drawings made between the late 18th and early 19th century, represent two palaces located in the cathedral square in Syracuse. These are the plants on the main floor of the palace of the commenda Borgia and the palace of the Borgia del Casale family. Both drawings represent the state of conservation, the distribution of rooms, the boundaries and the properties of the two buildings. The drawings also indicate the intentions of the owners in the management of the building, through new purchases and a distribution of rooms functional to their possible location.
