Using System Dynamics to understand Workplace Conflict
This study uses a systemic approach to explore the dynamics of learning and negative emotion in workplace intraorganisational conflict. Our dynamic hypothesis was that the endogenous dynamics between the level of intraorganisational conflict and the levels of learning and negative emotion, which are accumulating in the organisation as by-products of conflict, are causing the conflict level to oscillate. A review by Cronin & Berzukova (2006) identified two problematic, undesired patterns of intraorganisational conflict development over time (Group Disintegration, Groupthink) and one desired pattern of moderate conflict level (Cohesion and Resilience), which comprised our Reference Mode. …
Unintended Effects of Energy Efficiency Policy: Lessons Learned in the Residential Sector
2021
The European Union has set an ambitious goal to tackle climate change, and energy efficiency in the residential sector is among the measures required to close the gap between targeted and actual greenhouse gas emissions. While different policy tools have been applied, the diffusion rate of these measures remains low. A system dynamics simulation model of the residential sector was developed to assess the advantages and drawbacks of energy efficiency policy in the multi-family building sector based on experience accumulated over the last twelve years in Latvia. The model was validated in expert group model building sessions and with historical trends. Simulating the model, a hypothesis was t…
"Public Governance of Cultural Heritage". Using the institution of Trust to recover the degraded cultural assets owned by a Municipality
In Italy, the cultural heritage care has always been charged primarily to the State or,more generally, to the Public Sector, especially in the light of its natural aptitude to pursue general interests. However, nowadays the primacy of the public actors (first and foremost the Municipalities, viewed more and more as main actors in charge for the care of cultural heritage), risks being questioned by increasingly stringent budgetary constraints. The latter have been compromising the capability to guarantee a fair and widespread protection and to make the cultural heritage available to the community, as witnessed by the progressive accumulation of degraded or abandoned cultural heritage over ti…

A computational method to optimal control of a wind turbine system using wavelets
2011
Author's version of a chapter in the book: Proceedings of the IEEE International Syposium on Computer-Aided Control System Design (2011). Also avaliable from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/CACSD.2011.6044551 This paper deals with a computational optimization approach to the problem of state-feedback control design for a wind turbine system. The first step of the study is to develop a reduced order model for the system by considering the most important physical phenomena of aerodynamics and structural dynamics. Moreover, the behavior of the system can be influenced by the coupled dynamics between the tower motions and the blade pitch and turbine speed which can cause instabiliti…
Fuzzy Sliding Mode Controller Design Using Takagi-Sugeno Modelled Nonlinear Systems
2013
Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/734094 Open access Adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controller for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems is proposed in this paper. The unknown system dynamics and upper bounds of the minimum approximation errors are adaptively updated with stabilizing adaptive laws. The closed-loop system driven by the proposed controllers is shown to be stable with all the adaptation parameters being bounded. The performance and stability of the proposed control system are achieved analytically using the Lyapunov stability theory. Simulations show that the …
Introducing a strategic perspective in lean thinking applications through system dynamics modelling: the dynamic Value Stream Map
2020
PurposeLean Thinking is an operation management discipline which aims to identify, map and analyse the activities forming a process to detect “value waste” and outline the most effective flow of activities to execute in sequence. Process mapping is often developed in lean projects through the use of the Value Stream Map (VSM). Like many other management tools, the VSM adopts a static and non-systemic perspective in the representation of an organizational process. This may result in the implementation of Lean projects inconsistent with the overall organizational long-term strategy, thus leading to dysfunctional performance. In order to overcome this limit, the paper suggests combining VSM wi…
Dynamic business modeling for sustainability: Exploring a system dynamics perspective to develop sustainable business models
2019
In the last decade, business models for sustainability have gained increasing attraction by corporate sustainability scholars with international conferences and scientific journals encouraging the development of the debate on their design, use and innovation processes. Capitalizing on the basic principles, requirements, and methodological limitations found in the literature on sustainability‐oriented business model design, this paper aims to conceptualize a dynamic business modeling for sustainability approach, which combines an adapted sustainable business model canvas and system dynamics modeling. To this end, the paper also illustrates the key operating principles of the proposed approac…
