The diversity and evolution of chelicerate hemocyanins

2012

Abstract Background Oxygen transport in the hemolymph of many arthropod species is facilitated by large copper-proteins referred to as hemocyanins. Arthropod hemocyanins are hexamers or oligomers of hexamers, which are characterized by a high O2 transport capacity and a high cooperativity, thereby enhancing O2 supply. Hemocyanin subunit sequences had been available from horseshoe crabs (Xiphosura) and various spiders (Araneae), but not from any other chelicerate taxon. To trace the evolution of hemocyanins and the emergence of the large hemocyanin oligomers, hemocyanin cDNA sequences were obtained from representatives of selected chelicerate classes. Results Hemocyanin subunits from a sea s…

Cultivable Fungal Endophytes in Roots, Rhizomes and Leaves of Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile along the Coast of Sicily, Italy

2022

The presence of endophytic fungi in the roots, rhizomes, and leaves of Posidonia oceanica was evaluated in different localities of the Sicilian coast. Samples of roots, rhizomes, and leaves were submitted to isolation techniques, and the obtained fungal colonies were identified by morphological and molecular (rRNA sequencing) analysis. Fungal endophytes occurred mainly in roots and occasionally in rhizomes and leaves. Lulwoana sp. was the most frequent of the isolated taxa, suggesting a strong interaction with the host. In addition, eight other fungal taxa were isolated. In particular, fungi of the genus Ochroconis and family Xylariaceae were identified as endophytes in healthy plants at al…

Food supplementation reveals constraints and adaptability of egg quality in the magpie Pica pica

2015

Differences in the deposition of limited maternal resources to eggs can reflect the optimal allocation to manipulate offspring phenotype, or constraints caused by maternal condition. We examined multiple maternal substances transferred to eggs in the magpie Pica pica to test the hypothesis that certain substances represent constraint and some optimal allocation. We did this by supplementary feeding magpies prior to egg-laying and then comparing the effect of food on maternal substances in conjunction with laying order relative to a control group. Certain substances such as carotenoids, immunoglobulins and avidin responded positively to food supplementation, whereas others, such as testoste…

Molecular evidence for cosmopolitan distribution of platyhelminth parasites of tunas (Thunnus spp.)

2007

Global distribution of platyhelminth parasites and their host specificities are not well known. Our hypothesis was that platyhelminth parasites of large pelagic fishes are common around the world. We analysed molecular variation in three different taxa of platyhelminth parasites infecting four species of tunas: yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares, Scombridae) from Western Australia, southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii, Scombridae) from South Australia, Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis, Scombridae) from Pacific Mexico and northern bluefin tuna (T. thynnus, Scombridae) from two localities in the Mediterranean (Spain and Croatia). Comparisons of ITS2 and partial 28S rDNA demonstrated…

Olive yield as a function of soil moisture dynamics

2011

This study introduces a water-driven crop model aiming to quantitatively link olive yield to climate and soil moisture dynamics using an ecohydrological approach. A mathematical model describing soil moisture, evapotranspiration and assimilation dynamics of olive orchards is developed here. The model is able to explicitly reproduce two different hydroclimatic phases in Mediterranean areas: the well-watered conditions in which evapotranspiration and assimilation assume their maximum values and the real conditions where the limitations induced by soil moisture availability are taken into account. Annual olive yield is obtained by integrating the carbon assimilation during the growing season, …

Details from the Life of the Bonhoeffer Family: New Insights about the Biography and Theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer in the Memoirs of his Youngest S…

2020

Just recently, the autobiography of Susanne Bonhoeffer, the younger sister of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, has been rediscovered. She has bequeathed an excellent and extensive description of her family’s life and reveals new insights about the Bonhoeffer family and the history of her time. Her work will be a substantial contribution to further research. As the editor of this challenging project, I would like to investigate how this text may affect our perception of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s biography and theology. A lot of information about Dietrich Bonhoeffer is offered in the autobiography of his sister Susanne – last but not least about his time in prison, when Susanne was sent by her family to vis…

Zabezpieczenie na nieruchomości w postępowaniu karnym jako wyraz równorzędności reguł interpretacji w praktyce orzeczniczej sądu karnego

2021

Artykuł poddaje analizie instytucję zabezpieczenia na nieruchomości w postępowaniu karnym w kontekście połączenia w niej działania organów postępowania karnego w dwóch różnych procedurach i w dwóch różnych pozycjach procesowych. Zabezpieczenie następuje w zakresie tytułu wykonawczego w postaci stosownego postanowienia i wynika z postępowania karnego w fazie in personam. Tytuł wykonawczy uzyskany w procedurze karnej stanowi podstawę wpisu hipoteki przymusowej według regulacji procedury cywilnej do księgi wieczystej. Artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie powyższej problematyki w kontekście rozkładu ciężaru argumentacyjnego poszczególnych uczestników dyskursu wskazanej sytuacji procesowej, a także…

Sex roles during conspecific territorial defence in the Zenaida dove, Zenaida aurita

2012

Social monogamy in vertebrates often involves the joint defence of an all-purpose territory by pair members. Although both sexes presumably benefit from holding a territory, sex-related variation is often observed in territory defence at the interspecific level, particularly in birds. Most studies of territorial defence in monogamous birds, however, have been conducted on songbirds or on bird species living in temperate areas. In contrast, data on nonoscine tropical bird species remain scarce. We experimentally studied territorial defence in 20 pairs of Zenaida doves, a tropical and territorial monogamous bird species that maintains year-round pair bonds. Overall, males responded to intrusi…

Vigilance and food intake rate in paired and solitary Zenaida DovesZenaida aurita

2011

We quantified vigilance during feeding in the Zenaida Dove Zenaida aurita, a tropical species with stable pair-bonds and year-round territoriality. Both males and females decreased the proportion of time spent vigilant by 30% when feeding with their partner compared with when feeding alone. This reduction was achieved through increasing the length of inter-scan duration, while scan duration remained constant. No evidence was found for coordination of vigilance between pair members. The equal investment in vigilance by male and female Zenaida Doves might be related to the mutual benefits of long-term pair-bonding.
