Metaphycus sp. nr. flavus (Encyrtidae: Hymenoptera) is a parasitoid species collected from the Mediterranean region which lays its eggs in the immature stages of several economically important soft scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccidae), including brown soft scale, Coccus hesperidum L. (= host insect). Preliminary tests suggested that the parasitoid is most successful in producing offspring when it oviposits in the younger stages of brown soft scale. In Y-olfactometer bioassays measuring wasp choices and residence times, naïve parasitoids were significantly more attracted to yucca leaves infested with 26, 27, or 28 d-old scale than to uninfested leaves, whereas leaves with older (29-30 d-old) …

Ongoing studies by our group showed that the outcome of the intrinsic competition between two solitary egg parasitoids, Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) and Ooencyrtus telenomicida (Vassiliev) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), is dominated by O. telenomicida. In this article we investigated the role played by the ovipositing O. telenomicida female in the suppression of a T. basalis competitor. Laboratory experiments were conducted by allowing an O. telenomicida female to puncture the eggs of Nezara viridula (L.) Summary Host-commensal relationships in the skin are a complex system governed by variables related to the host, the bacteria and the environment. A disruption of this system may lead to new steady states, which, in turn, may lead to disease. We have studied one such disruption by characterizing the skin micro- biota in healthy and immunodepressed (ID) mice. A detailed anatomopathological study failed to reveal any difference between the skin of healthy and ID mice. AbstractFive species of spirotrichonymphids representing three genera have been studied by light and immunofluorescence microscopy, and by transmission electron microscopy. The genus Spirotrichonympha, represented by S. flagellata from Reticulitermes grassei, is characterized by a compound axostyle composed of several fibers or subaxostyles. Three new species of the genus Adelphenaldis from Africa (including Madagascar) are described: Adelphenaldis capensis sp. n., A. mesoafricanus sp. n., and A. noyesi sp. n. The female of A. subsurrectionis (Fischer, 2003) and the male of A. claricornis (Fischer, 1993) are recorded for the first time and described.

Abstract The genus Crassocephalum in Asia, introduced there from Africa, was examined by extensive field work, herbarium studies, analyses of pollen and seed fertility, chromosome counts and ITS and trnL‐F sequencing. We found that Crassocephalum in Asia comprises two species and their interspecific hybrid. The two species are C. crepidioides (Benth.) S. Moore and C. rubens (Juss. ex Jacq.) S. Moore, of which the latter is a new record for Asia (north Thailand). The hybrid between these two species in north Thailand originated from a cross between C. crepidioides (2n = 40) as female and C. rubens (2n = 40) as male parent.

AbstractThe pattern of teethrows on the roof of the mouth and the numbers of teeth enable as diagnostic characteristics the determination of the Central European Urodela. Particularly the distinction between T. vulgaris and T. helveticus is now definite in all stages after metamorphose. The degree of development of the vomeromaxillarfold (Triturus) respectively of the vomerfold (Salamandra) indicates whether a specimen is an adult, juvenile or newly metamorphosed one.

Transmission electron microscopy was used to evaluate the ultrastructural morphology of some other symbiotic prokaryotes of Joenia annectens, an intestinal flagellate of the termite Kalotermes flavicollis. Three morphotypes are predominant and recognizable from their morphological characteristics. One morphotype is represented by spirochaetes that are mainly external and cover the flagellate, helping its movement. Rod-shaped bacteria, which represent the second morphotype, are also attached to the surface among the spirochaetes. Summary Three strains of Lactobacillus brevis and one strain of Lactobacillus buchneri grew very poorly on glucose. Good growth was observed on glucose plus glycerol; while glucose was fermented to acetate or ethanol, lactate and CO 2 , glycerol was dehydrated to 3-hydroxypropanal and subsequently reduced to propanediol-1.3. Cell extracts of L. brevis and L. buchneri grown on glucose plus glycerol contained a B 12 -dependent glycerol dehydratase and a propanediol-1.3 dehydrogenase. Glycerol was not metabolized when used as the only substrate. Fructose as sole carbon source was partially reduced to mannitol.
