We investigated cues that mediate the aggregation behavior of immature pentatomid bugs by using nymphs of six different pentatomid bug species (Nezara viridula, Acrosternum hilare, Chlorochroa ligata, Chlorochroa sayi, Thyanta pallidovirens, and Euschistus conspersus). When first instars of any two species were put together in a Petri dish, they readily formed heterospecific aggregations similar to their natural conspecific aggregations. The chemical profiles of first and second instar nymphs of each species were determined by solvent extraction with pentane, followed by GC-MS analysis. In response to insect herbivory, plants emit volatile organic compounds which may act as indirect plant defenses by attracting natural enemies of the attacking herbivore. In nature, plants are often attacked by multiple herbivores, but the majority of studies which have investigated indirect plant defenses to date have focused on the recruitment of different parasitoid species in a single-herbivore context. Evolutionary psychologists and ethologists have largely attempted to explain this phenomenon via mating preferences and strategies. Here, we test one of the most popular evolutionary hypotheses for beauty-enhancing behaviors, drawn from mating market and parasite stress perspectives, in a large cross-cultural sample. – Spawning biomass and recruitment data for vendace from a central Finnish lake were analysed by fitting various recruitment models and comparing the fits statistically. The compensatory models of Ricker, Cushing and Beverton & Holt fitted the data better than the H0 hypothesis of constant proportionality, but model and parameter uncertainties were high. Additional variables were included in an attempt to reduce uncertainties. Heavy wind forcing during the first month after hatching of larvae reduced the recruitment success. Resume Un forage (Ravieres, Yonne; Sud-Est du Bassin de Paris, France), dans les sediments de plate-forme carbonatee du Bajocien-Bathonien, permet une analyse sedimentologique et sequentielle couplee a des analyses geochimiques (Sr, Mg, Fe, Mn et δ18O). Grâce au signal du strontium, des cycles geochimiques correlables aux cycles sedimentaires de transgression-regression de facies sont mis en evidence. Cependant, l'interpretation des cycles geochimiques necessite un changement de referentiel par rapport aux travaux jusqu'ici realises en domaine de bassin.

Seasonal succession of the phytoplankton was studied with shortinterval sampling in an eutrophic pond warmed during winter months by a small thermal power plant in central Finland since Octover 1978. Simultaneously with phytoplankton, also physical and chemical properties of water and zooplankton were studied.
