Survivorship in animals depends on both foraging activities and avoidance of predation, and thus behavioural decisions often reflect a trade-off between predation risk and foraging efficiency. In this experimental study, we compared behavioural responses of free-living adult and juvenile Willow Tits Poecile montanus to a conspecific alarm call in two treatments. The alarm call was played back when a focal bird was either not feeding, or feeding on a sunflower seed on the middle part of a spruce branch. A recent study on geographical variation in egg size of Great Tits Parus major concluded that: (1) mean egg size tended to increase with increasing latitude; and (2) mean egg size was positively correlated with mean clutch size. Including new data on both egg and clutch size, we reanalysed the relationships between egg size, clutch size and latitude, and investigated the possible effects of habitat type, female body size and egg shape on these relationships. We examined the reactions of captive wild great tits to novel unpalatable prey with (1) a traditional aposematic signal (black and yellow) (2) a novel signal (light pink), and (3) a control signal (brown). Prey were offered either singly or in groups to see whether novel signals with fewer possibilities for synergistic benefits are more dependent on grouping than are the traditional signals. Mullerian mimicry, by definition, is the visual resemblance between two or more aposematic prey species. According to classical Mullerian mimicry theory, comimics draw mutual benefits from the resemblance because predators have to learn to avoid only one colour pattern. In contrast, the relatively untested quasi-Batesian mimicry theory suggests that, because of differences in unpalatablility, the less toxic mimic acts like a parasite on the more defended prey, decreasing its fitness. Competition for nest-boxes among four vertebrate species: an experimental study in orange groves

The experiment was carried out in eastern Spain from 1986 to 1988. The nest-boxes were placed at the height where natural holes occur, visited twice a week, and cleaned after every breeding season. Four vertebrate species used the nest-boxes: great tit Parus major, house sparrow Passer domesticus, tree sparrow Passer montanus, and black rat Rattus rattus. The first species to occupy the nest-boxes, the great tit, was the least able to defend them. During the third year breeding by the great tit in the nest-boxes decreased markedly, probably due to the increase of house sparrow and black rat occupation. Aims To determine patterns of nestling provisioning, the effort made by the parents, and the factors which affect them. Methods Mechanical counters to determine food provisioning patterns in 229 Great Tit Parus major nests over 4 years. Can experienced birds select for Müllerian mimicry?

Field experiments have shown that avian predators in the wild can select for similarity of warning signals in aposematic prey (Müllerian mimicry) because a common signal is better protected than a signal that is novel and rare. The original theory of Müllerian mimicry assumes that the mechanism promoting mimicry is predator learning; by sharing a signal, the comimic species share the mortality that is due to sampling by inexperienced predators. Predation events have not been observed in the wild, and learning experiments with naive bird predators in a laboratory have not unambiguously shown a benefit of a uniform signal compared with different signals.
