Detrital zircon and micropalaeontological ages as new constraints for the lowermost tectonic unit (Talea Ori unit) of Crete, Greece

The Talea Ori unit is the lowermost known tectonic unit of Crete and the most external part of the Hellenides. Its stratigraphy ranges from Late Carboniferous to Oligocene and outcrops of the lower part are only known in the Talea Ori mountains (central Crete). In this area, a black sandstone at the base of the Galinos Beds, thought to be the oldest formation, contains zircons which were dated using the single grain evaporation method. The majority of these grains yielded Late Carboniferous ages (Variscan), while a small group yielded Early Proterozoic ages. Risk taking in natural predation risk gradients: support for risk allocation from breeding pied flycatchers

Predation risk is vital in foraging decisions because activity involves some degree of risk. In a natural setting, predation risk shows temporal variation, which has been largely neglected in antipredator studies. We tested a prediction of the risk allocation hypothesis in which allocation to antipredator behaviours will depend on temporal variation in perceived risk. Individuals are predicted to allocate heightened antipredator behaviours to brief infrequent periods of high risk, but with increasing frequency of high-risk periods, individuals will invest less in these behaviours. Species richness-standing crop relationship in stream bryophyte communities: patterns across multiple scales

Summary 1 We tested for a unimodal (‘hump-backed’) relationship between species richness and standing crop at various spatial scales in stream bryophyte communities. Bryophyte species and their biomasses were determined from 20 to 25 quadrats in eight river and six stream sites in northern Finland. 2 Regression analyses revealed a quadratic relationship between richness and biomass in only two of the river sites and a positive correlation in one other. Etude expérimentale de la lamination des stromatolithes à Rivularia haematites en climat tempéré: édification des lamines micritiques

The lamination of Rivularia haematites stromatolites (D.C.) Agardh was studied experimentally for 7 years. Micritic laminae are found to form in three stages: biological formation of dark laminae during the wet season, microsparitic calcification of these laminae in the form of clearly individualized polycrystalline aggregates and, finally, micritization of the latter by bacterial action. These three stages develop over 2 to 3 years. The occurrence of transverse, longitudinal and circular microfibrils in the outer sheath is thought to explain the nucleation and the three-dimensional structure of the microsparitic crystals of the dark laminae and of the polycrystalline aggregates.

Habitat geometry of benthic substrata: effects on arrival and settlement of mobile epifauna

Abstract The effect of substratum complexity on the early stages of colonization by mobile epifauna was assessed through a comparative study based on the architecture of artificial substrata. We conducted field observations over 4 years, on six types of small plastic substrata placed in the low intertidal zone of an exposed rocky shore, for varied immersion periods (1, 2, 4 and 12 wk). Protected areas host important remnants of marine turtle nesting stocks in the Dominican Republic

AbstractNesting by marine turtles in the Caribbean has declined considerably, mainly because of human exploitation, but there has previously been no monitoring in the Dominican Republic. We present the first detailed assessment of the status of marine turtle nesting in the country, based on surveys during 2006–2010. Nesting populations of hawksbill Eretmochelys imbricata and leatherback turtle Dermochelys coriacea are of regional importance and the green turtle Chelonia mydas is still present, although nesting in low numbers. G12 rotaviruses are globally emergent rotaviruses causing severe childhood gastroenteritis. Little is known about the evolution and diversity of G12P[8] rotaviruses and the possible role that widespread vaccine use, globally, has had on their emergence. In Sicily, Italy, surveillance activity for rotaviruses has been conducted uninterruptedly since 1985, thus representing a unique observatory for the study of human rotaviruses in the pre- and post-vaccine era.
