Distribution and spatial structure of pelagic fish schools in relation to the nature of the seabed in the Sicily Channel (Central Mediterranean).

2009

Hydroacoustic data collected during two echosurveys carried out in the Sicily Channel in 1998 and 2002 were analysed to investigate the distribution and spatial structure of small pelagic fish species in relation to the sedimentological nature of the sea bottom. The study was carried out on two contiguous areas (labelled ZONE 1 and ZONE 2) of the continental shelf off the southern coast of Sicily, characterised by different dominant texture, ‘sand’ for ZONE 1 and ‘clayey-silt’ for ZONE 2. Simultaneous information on small pelagic fish schools and the seabed was obtained using a quantitative echo-sounder (SIMRAD EK500) that measures echoes due to the scattering from both fish schools and the…

Exotic Guavas are Foci of Forest Regeneration in Kenyan Farmland

2007

Fruiting trees in degraded areas are attractive for frugivorous birds and may become centers of regeneration. However, a number of tree species in degraded areas are exotic species. Thus, the question arises whether these exotic species can also act as foci for forest regeneration. In the farmland adjacent to Kakamega Forest, Kenya, we investigated the frugivore assemblage in, and seed rain and seedling establishment under, 29 fruiting exotic guava trees (Psidium guajava) at different distances to the forest. The results show that 40 frugivorous bird species visited guava trees. All of the seed and 82 percent of the seedling species found under the treecrowns were animal dispersed, 58 and 5…

Allium moly subsp. glaucescens (Asparagaceae), a new subspecies from the Iberian Peninsula

2015

Allium moly subsp. glaucescens is described as a new subspecies from the Iberian Peninsula. Different morphological characters from populations located in Valencia (Spain) are evidenced. Lower size of plants, smaller and narrower leaves, of noticeably bluish-green color (glaucous-pruinose), smaller and less flowers in the umbel-inflorescence are characteristic of the new subspecies. Ecology, habitat, cultivation and chemotaxonomy have also been considered and discussed in this work.

Anthicidae (Insecta: Coleoptera) of the Lesser Sunda Islands – A Preliminary Review

2021

An account of the Anthicidae (ant-like flower beetles) from the Lesser Sunda Archipelago (politically shared between Indonesia & Timor Leste) is presented for the first time. Thirteen species new to science are described and illustrated: Anthicomorphus badengsp. nov. (Bali), Anthicus (s. str.) miroshnikovisp. nov. (East Java, Lombok, Timor Leste), A. (s. str.) renschisp. nov. (Flores), Anthelephila anthophilasp. nov. (Timor Leste), A. barsevskisisp. nov. (Timor Island), A. nusatenggarasp. nov. (Lombok), A. tamborasp. nov. Another New Riparian Dendrobatid Frog Species from the Upper Amazon Basin of Peru

2003

A new dendrobatid frog of the genus Colostethus is described from the Cordillera El Sira, an isolated mountain ridge in the upper Amazon basin of central Peru. It has bright yellowish dorsolateral stripes thus resembling Colostethus exasperatus, Colostethus sp. (cf. exasperatus), and Colostethus nexipus, all from the upper Amazon basin of Ecuador and Peru. In morphology, the new species is most similar to Colostethus mcdiarmidi from the eastern Andean slopes of Bolivia and Colostethus alessandroi from the eastern Andean slopes of Peru. The new species can be distinguished from all these taxa on the basis of coloration including the color of the ring around pupil in life, adult male size, le…

New species of the rugose coral genus Lithostrotion Fleming in the upper Viséan from the Azrou-Khenifra Basin (Morocco)

2020

The new species Lithostrotion termieri Rodríguez & Somerville is described. It shows very large corallites of the rugose genus Lithostrotion Fleming. It has been recorded up to now only in upper Viséan rocks from the type locality, the Akrab ridge, Morocco also called Tizi Ben Zizouit by Termier & Termier (1950), who identified it as Lonsdaleia floriformis, and south-east from Tabainout, also from the Azrou-Khenifra Basin.

<i>Acacia cyclops</i> A. Cunn. ex G. Don (Leguminosae) in Italy: first cases of naturalization

2012

The first two cases of naturalization of <i>Acacia cyclops</i> are reported for Italy. Young trees were observed growing in the wild some 15 years ago on Linosa (Pelagie Islands, Strait of Sicily). A decade later, this alien plant should no longer be considered as a casual, since a very intensive process of self-sown regeneration has been observed in some plantations on Lampedusa, the major island of the same Archipelago. The available literature suggests the need for careful monitoring of the ongoing invasion process, as <i>A. cyclops</i> has already shown a very invasive behaviour elsewhere within Mediterranean-type biomes due to its ability to withstand high envir…

Freshwater discharge and sediment dispersal — Control on growth, ecological structure and geometry of Late Miocene shallow-water coral ecosystems (ea…

2007

Abstract Insolation-driven oceanographic changes are well documented in the Mediterranean deep-sea record and reflect episodes of high precipitation and/or freshwater discharge. In the shallow-water record, however, changes in relative sea-level and sea surface temperature are usually regarded as prime controls on Miocene coral reefs, whereas pulses of freshwater influx represent a hitherto unrecognized factor influencing their growth, ecological structure and geometry. On the island of Crete (NW Messara Basin, Greece) early Tortonian coral biostromes occur associated with deltas along the basin margin and rimming islands formed by large uplifted tectonic blocks. In turbid delta environment…

Description of a new species: Dorylaimus parasiticus , a parasite of amphibians in the Iberian Peninsula (Nematoda: Dorylaimida)

1995

Dorylaimus parasiticussp. nov. (Nematoda: Dorylaimidae) si described from the digestive tract and general body cavity of Salamandra salamandra, Rana perezi, and Bufo bufo, amphibians of the Iberian Peninsula (Spain). This is the first record of a member of the Order Dorylaimida size, a thick transversely striated body cuticle with 20 to 26 longitudinal ridges.

Effects of salinity, temperature and food level on the demographic characteristics of the seawater rotifer Synchaeta littoralis Rousselet.

2001

A strain of the seawater species Synchaeta littoralis, isolated from a Spanish Mediterranean coastal salt marsh, was cultured in the laboratory and fed with the alga Tetraselmis sp. The effect of three salinities (25 per thousand, 30 per thousand and 35 per thousand), two temperatures (20 degrees C and 25 degrees C) and two food levels (75,000 and 150,000 cells ml(-1)) on demographic parameters was studied using a life table approach. Average lifespan (LS) ranged between 4.0 and 7.3 days, net reproductive rate (R(0)) between 4.2 and 9.1 offspring per female, and intrinsic growth rate (r) between 0.50 and 0.95 day(-1). Salinity and temperature had a significant negative effect (***p<0.001) o…
