A note on the Lawrence-Krammer-Bigelow representation
2002
A very popular problem on braid groups has recently been solved by Bigelow and Krammer, namely, they have found a faithful linear representation for the braid group B_n. In their papers, Bigelow and Krammer suggested that their representation is the monodromy representation of a certain fibration. Our goal in this paper is to understand this monodromy representation using standard tools from the theory of hyperplane arrangements. In particular, we prove that the representation of Bigelow and Krammer is a sub-representation of the monodromy representation which we consider, but that it cannot be the whole representation.
The inhibitory effect of long-term associative representation on working memory
2020
Studies on how long-term memory affects working memory (WM) have found that long-term memory can enhance WM processing. However, these studies only use item memory as the representation of long-term memory. In addition to item memory, associative memory is also an essential part of long-term memory. The associative memory and item memory involve different cognitive mechanisms and brain areas. The purpose of the present study was to investigate how associative memory affects WM processing. Before the WM task, participants were asked to store 16 pairs of dissimilar pictures into long-term memory. The participants would obtain the associative memory of these pairs of pictures in the long-term …
The Augmented Reality as an Instrument for the Representation/Visualization of Architecture
2019
This paper deals with issues related to the representation/visualization of architecture and its narration through the augmented reality tools. Specifically, the possible scenarios and the different strategies to address the problems related to the application of AR platforms in the field of cultural heritage are presented. Some case studies will be analyzed and the use of augmented reality applied to museums and archaeological sites including the Museum of the Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine in Paris, the Regional Archaeological Museum A. Salinas in Palermo and the archaeological site of Selinunte. Thanks to these exemplary cases, the potential and critical aspects of the latest AR…
Anchoring by Imitation Learning in Conceptual Spaces
2005
In order to have a robotic system able to effectively learn by imitation, and not merely reproduce the movements of a human teacher, the system should have the capabilities of deeply understanding the perceived actions to be imitated. This paper deals with the development of a cognitive architecture for learning by imitation in which a rich conceptual representation of the observed actions is built. The purpose of the following discussion is to show how the same conceptual representation can be used both in a bottom-up approach, in order to learn sequences of actions by imitation learning paradigm, and in a top-down approach, in order to anchor the symbolical representations to the perceptu…
Farewell to representation: text and society
2017
Cultures develop the criteria to construct and recognize their texts, and pose them as normal, usual, ‘natural’. For us a book is a text, in Middle Ages for everyone a city was a text. But when it is necessary to critically inspect such a culture by analyzing its texts, it becomes necessary to understand their conditions of possibility and their functioning. So, from the semiotic point of view the text is something that needs to be recognized and constructed at the same time, that is to say invented according to the double meaning this word has for the ancient rhetoric (recovering) and for modern science (creating) (Marrone 2014). This is true for the semiotician who search for the fundamen…
Typology and Representation of Alterations in Territorial Units: A Proposal
2018
Abstract This article proposes a typology of boundary changes in territorial units at two points in time. The different types of changes are organized in a hierarchy and represented homogeneously, independently of the number of territorial units involved and of the changes to them. Each alteration is described precisely and unambiguously, and it is codified to allow the information to be treated automatically. In addition to providing efficient storage of the information about these changes, a canonical representation facilitates the automatic detection of inconsistencies in the database. At the same time, the typology allows us to define backward and forward equivalence rules, which helps …
Origins and originality : Authenticity in the media representation of Julie Fowlis
2018
This article examines the ways in which Scottish Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis is constructed ‘authentic’ in the media. Two narratives that I call ‘narrative of origins’ and ‘narrative of professionalism’ construct her authenticity as a representative of the folk music scene. Fowlis represents the new Gaelic speaker, but is presented in terms of stereotypical imagery connected to Scotland, which portrays tradition as stagnant, quaint and in need of preservation. However, she is also presented as a professional artist, remaking and reinterpreting the tradition of a living culture that she represents. Thus, here authenticity ascribed on the artist is viewed as a cultural memory device, built on …
Dynamic 4D Blood Flow Representation in the Aorta and Analysis from Cine-MRI in Patients
2007
International audience; Abstract: Natural evolution of aortic disease is characterized by a diameter increase that can result in aortic dissection or rupture. Currently the evaluation of risk of rupture or dissection is based on the size of the aorta. However, this parameter is not always relevant and it appears necessary to define new parameters. In this perspective, 3D velocity imaging acquired with ECG gated velocity-encoded cine-MRI allows the aortic blood flow study. As the acquired images are not directly usable, the present study proposes a 4D-representation Of aortic blood flow in order to optimize the visualization of the particularities of non-laminar flow within the aorta. Image …
