An Approach to Cadastral Map Quality Evaluation in the Republic of Latvia

2009

An approach to cadastral map quality evaluation is proposed, which is elaborated and implemented by State Land Service of the Republic of Latvia. The approach is based on opinion of Land Service experts about cadastral map quality that depends on its usage points. Quality parameters of cadastral map objects identified by experts and its limit values are used for evaluation. The assessment matrix is used, which allow to define cadastral map quality that depends on its usage purpose. The matrix is used to find out, of what quality a cadastral map should be in order to be used for the chosen purpose. The given approach is flexible, it gives a possibility to change sets of quality parameters an…

Advertising Peer-To-Peer Networks over the Internet

2002

Weber, Matthieu Advertising Peer-to-Peer Networks over the Internet Jyvaskyla: University of Jyvaskyla, 2006, 120 p. (Jyvaskyla Licentiate Theses in Computing ISSN 1795-9713; 7) ISBN 951-39-2329-0 Finnish summary Most peer-to-peer networks nowadays are decentralized or even fully distributed, meaning that they do not require a central authority for proper operation. Joining such networks is however often performed by using a central directory of its members, thus breaking their decentralized characteristic. This work proposes an advertisement system for peer-to-peer networks that does not rely on a central service, nor requires any dedicated infrastructure to be setup, using only already ex…

Comparative Analysis of Natural Gas Pipeline Interconnections

2021

The paper shows a comparison between two intervention methods for interconnecting two gas transmission pipelines within a natural gas transmission system. One intervention implies shutdown of pipelines, while the other one in-service pipelines. Each method is described in detail along with the main technological issues, as well as the related advantages and disadvantages. The technological procedures imply special working techniques such as welding or hot tapping in service pipelines.

Co-designing a social media service for civic participation

2010

User participation in social media design processes has similarities with civic participation for example in urban planning. Internet enables new virtual environments that can be planned collaboratively and be used for civic participation. In the Monimos case study we developed a social media website for immigrants and multicultural associations in a participatory design process together with the users. In this paper we present the critical issues in co-designing a social media service that aims at civic participation. We also give suggestions for how to cope with the challenges in a multicultural participation process. We claim that constant meta-level discussion about the goals and partic…

Model-based approaches for the development of event-based systems using embedded services

2010

This paper presents a development use case of event-based system using (embedded) services specified in UPnP specification. Although we use only UPnP, we considered that the use case is also applicable for other (XML-based) service description technologies.

Improving problem solving and creativity through use of complex-dynamic simulations

2002

This article presents an instructional method to improve problem solving and creativity by employing computer-based simulations. The instructional method described is based upon empirical research conducted by the authors. The simulation presents contextually meaningful problem situations that require learners to analyze and prepare solution proposal(s). Following the learner input, the simulation assesses the proposal and offers back to the learners the consequences of their decisions while also iteratively updating the situational conditions. This type of simulation, unlike conventional simulations that are used for acquisition of knowledge, is complex-dynamic, requiring the learner to fu…

Human Factors Affecting the Patient’s Acceptance of Wireless Biomedical Sensors

2008

In monitoring arrhythmia, the quality of medical data from the ECG sensors may be enhanced by being based on everyday life situations. Hence, the development of wireless biomedical sensors is of growing interest, both to diagnose the heart patient, as well as to adjust the regimen. However, human factors such as emotional barriers and stigmatization, may affect the patient’s behavior while wearing the equipment, which in turn may influence quality of data. The study of human factors and patient acceptance is important both in relation to the development of such equipment, as well as in evaluating the quality of data gathered from the individual patient. In this paper, we highlight some impo…

2019

Background Key elements of instructional quality include the teacher's ability to immediately react in domain-specific classroom situations. Such skills - defined as action-related skills - can only be validly assessed using authentic representations of real-life teaching practice. However, research has not yet explained how teachers apply domain-specific knowledge for teaching and to what extent action-related skills are transferable from one domain to another. Aims Our study aims to examine (1) the relationship between action-related skills, content knowledge, and pedagogical content knowledge, and (2) the domain specificity of action-related skills of (prospective) teachers in the two do…

Student teachers' experiences of participating in mixed peer mentoring groups of in-service and pre-service teachers in Finland

2017

This article examines from the student perspective a new Finnish model of teacher development that uses the peer group mentoring (PGM) method for combining pre-service and in-service teacher education. Reflective reports of student teachers (N = 19) who participated in PGM were analyzed using the phenomenographic method. The results show that students' experiences varied from considering the activity as (1) a coffee break or (2) peer-support, to seeing it as (3) identity construction or (4) a way of participating in a professional community. In further development of the model more emphasis should be placed on the integration of theory and practice. peerReviewed

A Simulation Analysis for Assessing the Reliability of AC/DC Hybrid Microgrids - Part I: Underground Station and Car Parking

2021

This paper reports the results of a simulation study with the aim of evaluating the capability of two portions of a hybrid AC/DC MV/LV network of maintaining their operation in off-grid mode during the loss of the main AC grid due to a failure. In particular, the study aims to verify, in the case of islanded operation of the two microgrids, the continuity of the electricity service by exploiting the local generation plants, Energy Storage Systems (ESSs), and other flexible resources managed by suitable algorithms in different energy scenarios. The analysis was carried out considering two microgrids: an underground station and a car parking with Electric Vehicles (EVs). For assessing the per…
