CNN-based People Detection in Voxel Space using Intensity Measurements and Point Cluster Flattening

2021

In this paper real-time people detection is demonstrated in a relatively large indoor industrial robot cell as well as in an outdoor environment. Six depth sensors mounted at the ceiling are used to generate a merged point cloud of the cell. The merged point cloud is segmented into clusters and flattened into gray-scale 2D images in the xy and xz planes. These images are then used as input to a classifier based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The final output is the 3D position (x,y,z) and bounding box representing the human. The system is able to detect and track multiple humans in real-time, both indoors and outdoors. The positional accuracy of the proposed method has been verifi…

Preliminary assessment of the ATHENA/WFI non-X-ray background

2017

We present a preliminary assessment of the non-X-ray background for the WFI on board ATHENA conducted at IAAT in the context of the collaborative background and radiation damage working group activities. Our main result is that in the baseline configuration originally assumed for the camera the requirement on the level of non-X-ray background could not be met. In light of the results of Geant4 simulations we propose and discuss a possible optimization of the camera design and pinpoint some open issues to be addressed in the next phase of investigation. One of these concerns the possible contribution to the non-X-ray background from soft protons and ions funneled to the focal plane through t…

Hidden Oscillations In The Closed-Loop Aircraft-Pilot System And Their Prevention* *This work was supported by Russian Science Foundation (project 14…

2016

Abstract The paper is devoted to studying and prevention of a special kind of oscillations-the Pilot Involved Oscillations (PIOs) which may appear in man-machine closed-loop dynamical systems. The PIO of categories II and III are defined as essentially non-linear unintended steady fluctuations of the piloted aircraft, generated due to pilot efforts to control the aircraft with a high precision. The main non-linear factor leading to the PIO is, generally, rate limitations of the aircraft control surfaces, resulting in a delay in the response of the aircraft to pilot commands. In many cases, these oscillations indicate presence of hidden, rather than self-excited attractors in the aircraft-pi…

Robotic Exploration of Planetary Surfaces – Rover Technologies Developed for Space Exploration

2009

Mobility is a key feature for any science mission and for space exploration in general. Missions with mobile systems provide a much wider spectrum of outcomes by employing a higher number of samples within an increased area of exploration. The additional degree of freedom of a rover in comparison to a lander or even a robotic arm allows the mission to be flexibly adapted to the landing site as it is encountered.

Spatially variable rate herbicide application on durum wheat in Sicily

2004

Using the conventional farming system, durum wheat requires high rates of herbicide spraying. Herbicide residues can cause pollution of soil and ground water and, therefore, of the entire environment. In order to minimise the environmental impact of herbicides, a home made system for spatially variable rate crop input application was designed, developed and set up by the Department of Engineering and Technologies in Agriculture and Forestry (I.T.A.F.). This system consists of a DGPS, a portable computer, a specifically developed software and a device for applying rates proportionally related to the machine forward speed (DPA). Tests of spatially variable rate herbicide application were carr…

Non-separable local polynomial regression cell-average multiresolution operators. Application to compression of images

2016

Abstract Cell-average multiresolution Harten׳s algorithms have been satisfactorily used to compress data. These schemes are based on two operators: decimation and prediction. The accuracy of the method depends on the prediction operator. In order to design a precise function, local polynomial regression has been used in the last years. This paper is devoted to construct a family of non-separable two-dimensional linear prediction operators approximating the real values with this procedure. Some properties are proved as the order of the scheme and the stability. Some numerical experiments are performed comparing the new methods with the classical linear method.

Polynomial Fuzzy Models for Nonlinear Control: A Taylor Series Approach

2009

Classical Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy models are formed by convex combinations of linear consequent local models. Such fuzzy models can be obtained from nonlinear first-principle equations by the well-known sector-nonlinearity modeling technique. This paper extends the sector-nonlinearity approach to the polynomial case. This way, generalized polynomial fuzzy models are obtained. The new class of models is polynomial, both in the membership functions and in the consequent models. Importantly, T-S models become a particular case of the proposed technique. Recent possibilities for stability analysis and controller synthesis are also discussed. A set of examples shows that polynomial modeling is…

New Results in Generalized Minimum Variance Control of Computer Networks

2014

In this paper new results in adaptive (generalized) minimum variance control of packet switching computer networks are presented. New solutions, corresponding to the new inverses of the nonsquare polynomial matrices, can be used for design of robust control of multivariable systems with different number of inputs and outputs. Application of polynomial matrix inverses with arbitrary degrees of freedom creates the possibilities to optimal control of computer networks in terms of usage their maximal bandwidth. Simulation examples made in Matlab environment show big potential of presented approach. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5755/j01.itc.43.3.6268

Optimal Design of an X-Band, Fully-Coaxial, Easily-Tunable Broadband Power Equalizer for a Microwave Power Module

2020

A microwave power module (MPM), which is a hybrid combination of a solid-state power amplifier (SSPA) as a driver and a traveling-wave tube amplifier (TWT) as the final high power stage, is a high-power device largely used for radar applications. A gain equalizer is often required to flatten the TWT output power gain owing to its big gain fluctuations over the operating frequency range. In this paper, the design of an X-band, fully-coaxial, easily-tunable broadband power equalizer for an MPM is presented. The structure is composed of a coaxial waveguide as the main transmission line and a coaxial cavity loaded with absorbing material as a resonant unit. Sensitivity analyses of the attenuati…

Simple and Flexible Power Loss Minimizer With Low-Cost MCU Implementation for High-Efficiency Three-Phase Induction Motor Drives

2021

This paper presents a simple, practical and low-cost implementation of a power losses minimization algorithm for three-phase induction motors taking also into account both iron core losses and magnetic saturation. The algorithm evaluates, in real-time, the optimal direct axis magnetizing flux component for efficiency enhancement of the drive. A further advantage of the proposed technique is represented by a flexible and low-cost implementation by means of an ATMEL ATSAM3X8E microcontroller. The power loss minimization algorithm is tested preliminarily by means of several simulations, then, experimentally validated by applying the proposed control strategy on a 5.5 kW Field Oriented Control …
