SIFT Texture Description for Understanding Breast Ultrasound Images
2014
Texture is a powerful cue for describing structures that show a high degree of similarity in their image intensity patterns. This paper describes the use of Self-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT), both as low-level and high-level descriptors, applied to differentiate the tissues present in breast US images. For the low-level texture descriptors case, SIFT descriptors are extracted from a regular grid. The high-level texture descriptor is build as a Bag-of-Features (BoF) of SIFT descriptors. Experimental results are provided showing the validity of the proposed approach for describing the tissues in breast US images.
A Knowledge-Based System for the Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease
2003
Therapies to slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease are most effective when applied in its initial stages. Therefore it is important to develop methods to diagnose the disease as early as possible. It is also desirable to establish standards which can be used generally by physicians who may not be experts in diagnosis of the disease. One possible method to obtain an early diagnosis is the evaluation of the glucose metabolism of the brain. In this paper we present a prototype of an expert system that automatically diagnoses Alzheimer’s disease on the basis of positron emission tomography images displaying the metabolic activity in the brain.
Mesoporous Silica-Based Materials with Bactericidal Properties
2019
[EN] Bacterial infections are the main cause of chronic infections and even mortality. In fact, due to extensive use of antibiotics and, then, emergence of antibiotic resistance, treatment of such infections by conventional antibiotics has become a major concern worldwide. One of the promising strategies to treat infection diseases is the use of nanomaterials. Among them, mesoporous silica materials (MSMs) have attracted burgeoning attention due to high surface area, tunable pore/particle size, and easy surface functionalization. This review discusses how one can exploit capacities of MSMs to design and fabricate multifunctional/controllable drug delivery systems (DDSs) to combat bacterial …
Clinical pharmacology of citrus aurantium and citrus sinensis for the treatment of anxiety
2018
Objective. The aim of this review is to analyze preclinical and clinical studies investigating the anxiety effects ofCitrus aurantiumorCitrus sinensisessential oils (EOs).Design. The bibliographic research was made on the major scientific databases. Analysis included only articles written in English and published on peer-reviewed scientific journals describing preclinical experiments and clinical trials carried out to investigate the antianxiety effects ofCitrus aurantium or Citrus sinensisEOs on anxiety disorders. Clinical studies reporting the antianxiety effects of products containingCitrus aurantiumorCitrus sinensisEOs in combination with other active substances, including medicinal pla…
γδ cells involved in contact sensitivity preferentially rearrange the Vγ3 region and require interleukin-7
1997
Ptak and Askenase showed that both alphabeta and gammadelta cells are required for transfer of contact sensitivity (CS). This study confirms that day 4 immune cells depleted of gammadelta cells fail to transfer CS to trinitrochlorobenzene (TNP-Cl) systemically and demonstrates that administration of anti-gammadelta monoclonal antibodies (mAb) in vivo abolishes the CS reaction. Moreover, gammadelta cells accumulate at the antigen challenge site: these cells have the unusual phenotype CD8alpha+, CD8beta-, IL-4 R+ which we suggest is due to their state of activation. Following immunization with contact sensitizer on the skin, the absolute number of gammadelta cells increases in the regional ly…
Anti-endothelin drugs in solid tumors
2010
Importance of the field: The endothelin (ET) axis, which includes the biological functions of ETs and their receptors, has played a physiological role in normal tissue, acting as a modulator of vasomotor tone, tissue differentiation and development, cell proliferation and hormone production. Interestingly, it also functions in the growth and progression of various tumors. Several researchers have identified the blockade of the ET-1 receptor as a promising therapeutic approach. Areas covered in this review: The clinical investigation of an orally bioavailable ET antagonist, atrasentan, in prostate cancer, is encouraging. In this neoplasia, it has shown antitumor activity, bone metastasis con…
Comparison of frequency domain measures based on spectral decomposition for spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity assessment after Acute Myocardial Infa…
2021
Abstract The objective of this study is to present a new method to assess in the frequency domain the directed interactions between the spontaneous variability of systolic arterial pressure (SAP) and heart period (HP) from their linear model representation, and to apply it for studying the baroreflex control of arterial pressure in healthy physiological states and after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The method is based on pole decomposition of the model transfer function and on the following evaluation of causal measures of coupling and gain from the poles associated to low frequency (0.04−0.15 Hz) oscillatory components. It is compared with traditional non-causal approaches for the sp…
Stimulation with carbachol alters endomembrane distribution and plasma membrane expression of intracellular proteins in lacrimal acinar cells.
2000
The events that lead to Sjogren's autoimmune processes in the lacrimal gland remain poorly understood. The acinar cell's responses to acute cholinergic stimulation include release of secretory products across the apical plasma membrane (apm) and a number of processes related to traffic between endomembrane compartments and the basal-lateral plasma membranes (blm), such as recruitment of Na, K-ATPase, accelerated recycling, and accelerated transcytosis of secretory IgA. We tested the hypothesis that stimulation-induced acceleration of endomembrane traffic is accompanied by changes in compartmentation and increased blm expression of proteins that are normally sequestered in endomembrane compa…
