Minimal Reporting Standards for Active Middle Ear Hearing Implants.

2017

There is currently no standardized method for reporting audiological, surgical and subjective outcome measures in clinical trials with active middle ear implants (AMEIs). It is often difficult to compare studies due to data incompatibility and to perform meta-analyses across different centres is almost impossible. A committee of ENT and audiological experts from Germany, Austria and Switzerland decided to address this issue by developing new minimal standards for reporting the outcomes of AMEI clinical trials. The consensus presented here aims to provide a recommendation to enable better inter-study comparability.

Good decision-making is associated with an adaptive cardiovascular response to social competitive stress.

2018

Competition elicits different psychological and cardiovascular responses depending on a person's skills. Decision-making has been considered a distal factor that influences competition, but there are no studies analyzing this relationship. Our objective was to analyze whether decision-making affects the response to competition. Specifically, we aimed to test whether good performers on a decision-making test, the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), showed an adaptive cardiovascular response to competition. In all, 116 participants (44 women) performed the IGT and were classified into Good or Poor decision-makers. Subsequently, they were exposed to a stress task in two different conditions: a face-to-f…

Osmolality of various viscoelastic substances: comparative study.

2000

Abstract Purpose To determine the osmolality of various viscoelastic substances. Setting Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, and Institute for Medical Device Testing, Memmingen, Germany. Methods The analysis was carried out according to the European Pharmacopoeia by means of a calibrated osmometer using the freezing-point depression method. Each syringe was analyzed as a duplicate analysis. Results Mean osmolalities (mOsmol/kg) of the sodium hyaluronate viscoelastic substances were Allervisc® 299; Allervisc® Plus 307; Amvisc® Plus 335; AMO Vitrax® 284; Biolon® 279; Dispasan® 311; Dispasan® Plus 314; Healon® 295; Healon GV® 312; Healon®5 322; HYA-Ophtal® 376; M…

A Decision Support Tool for Appropriate Glucose-Lowering Therapy in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

2015

Contains fulltext : 152084.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) BACKGROUND: Optimal glucose-lowering therapy in type 2 diabetes mellitus requires a patient-specific approach. Although a good framework, current guidelines are insufficiently detailed to address the different phenotypes and individual needs of patients seen in daily practice. We developed a patient-specific decision support tool based on a systematic analysis of expert opinion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on the American Diabetes Association (ADA)/European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) 2012 position statement, a panel of 12 European experts rated the appropriateness (RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method) of tre…

Comparative characteristics of older people with type 1 diabetes treated with continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion or insulin injection therapy :…

2019

Aim To compare clinical characteristics and outcomes in adults with type 1 diabetes aged ≥ 60 years using continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) vs. insulin injection therapy. Further, to determine the percentage of older adults with type 1 diabetes using CSII. Research design and methods Retrospective study using data of the Diabetes Prospective Follow-up Registry (DPV). Including percentage CSII use from 2008 to 2018, and the characteristics of 9547 individuals extracted from the DPV in March 2019 (N = 1404 CSII; N = 8143 insulin injection therapy). Wilcoxon rank sum tests were used for continuous variables and chi-square tests for categorical variables to compare clinical charac…

The ecdysone-induced DHR4 orphan nuclear receptor coordinates growth and maturation in Drosophila

2005

0092-8674 (Print) Journal Article Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't; A critical determinant of insect body size is the time at which the larva stops feeding and initiates wandering in preparation for metamorphosis. No genes have been identified that regulate growth by contributing to this key developmental decision to terminate feeding. We show here that mutations in the DHR4 orphan nuclear receptor result in larvae that precociously leave the food to form premature prepupae, resulting in abbreviated larval development that translates directly into smaller and lighter animals. In addition, we show that DHR4 plays a central role in the genetic cascades triggered by the steroid hormone ecdyson…

Current status on the adoption of high energy devices in Italy. An Italian Society for Endoscopic Surgery and New Technologies (SICE) national survey

2021

Background: In the past three decades, different High Energy Devices (HED) have been introduced in surgical practice to improve the efficiency of surgical procedures. HED allow vessel sealing, coagulation and transection as well as an efficient tissue dissection. This survey was designed to verify the current status on the adoption of HED in Italy. Methods: A survey was conducted across Italian general surgery units. The questionnaire was composed of three sections (general information, elective surgery, emergency surgery) including 44 questions. Only one member per each surgery unit was allowed to complete the questionnaire. For elective procedures, the survey included questions on thyroid…

Effects of Different Opioid Receptor Antagonists on the Electrically-Evoked Release of Endogenous Dopamine from the Isolated Neural Lobe of the Rat P…

2009

Abstract Isolated neural lobes of the rat pituitary gland were incubated in Krebs-HEPES solution which contained the dopamine uptake inhibitor GBR 12921 and in some experiments additionally pargyline. The release of endogenous dopamine evoked by electrical stimulation of the pituitary stalk was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. (+/-)- Naloxone increased the evoked dopamine release maximally by 440% (EC(50) 209 nM). The (+)-enantiomer of naloxone (up to 10 muM) did not affect the release of dopamine. The preferential kappa-opioid receptor antagonist MR 2266 increased the evoked dopamine release maximally by 135% (EC(50) 7 nM). MR 2267, the i…
