Diapause as escape strategy to exposure to toxicants: response of Brachionus calyciforus to arsenic

2016

Invertebrate organisms commonly respond to environmental fluctuation by entering diapause. Production of diapause in monogonont rotifers involves a previous switch from asexual to partial sexual reproduction. Although zooplankton have been used in ecotoxicological assays, often their true vulnerability to toxicants is underestimated by not incorporating the sexual phase. We experimentally analyzed traits involved in sexual reproduction and diapause in the cyclically parthenogenetic freshwater rotifer, Brachionus calyciflorus, exposed to arsenic, a metalloid naturally found in high concentrations in desert zones, focusing on the effectiveness of diapause as an escape response in the face of …

Inter- and intraspecific variability in invertebrate acute toxicity response to Arsenic and Fluoride exposure

2018

The adverse effects of arsenic and fluoride exposure on six groups of freshwater invertebrates were investigated. Acute toxicity tests (48-h) with arsenic trioxide (As2NO3) resulted in the following pattern of sensitivity: Daphnia magna 24-h-old = Brachionus patulus 72-h-old = Daphnia. cf. prolata, 21-d-old = D. magna 5-d-old > Heterocypris incongruens juvenile instars > Culex sp. Heterocypris juv. incongruens instars were the second group more tolerant to arsenic and the second group that bioconcentrates arsenic the least. In contrast, invertebrates exposed to sodium fluoride (NaF), showed a different pattern of sensitivity: H. incongruens instars > B. patulus = D. magna 24-h-old > D. cf. …

Finance journal rankings : A paper affiliation methodology

2022

PurposeIn this paper, the authors use a new methodology, called paper affiliation index, to create finance journal ranking using expert judgment and research impact, both of which are based on secondary, objective measures, thus making it possible to produce lists every year without human manipulation at virtually no cost.Design/methodology/approachBibliometrics. Python implementation.FindingsA new ranking with 65 finance journals.Research limitations/implicationsThis procedure helps to reduce bias and to deal with known problems associated with current methodologies. The data used in the methodology comes from public sources; the procedure is therefore easily replicable. This methodology i…

The lai “Si bé, Fortuna, has dat lo torn”: a critical edition of the catalan poem from the novel Triste deleitación

2019

The Castilian novel Triste deleitación, written in the late fifteenth century by an author from the Crown of Aragon, includes several letters and poems. One of these poems, “Sy bé, Fortuna, as dat lo torn”, is written in Catalan. This article presents the poem’s annotated critical edition, which reports how it is indebted to the Catalan lyrical tradition. Written in an evolved form of the French lai cultivated by various Catalan poets, the poem is clearly influenced by Pere Torroella’s lai “Qui volrà veure un pobre estat”, and linked to two other similar lais also dependent on Torroella’s. This edition is completed by a translation into modern Catalan. La novel·la en castellà Triste deleita…

Irreproducibility in Research. What can we do about it?

2016

We all would agree with Karl Popper's statement: 'Non-reproducible single occurrences are of no significance to science.' But what if a substantial percentage of published scientific facts are of the irreproducible category? Such an alarming scenario may be close to reality, according to a number of recent reports. Indeed, some shocking statistics suggest that irreproducibility has gone awry in the last years. For instance, pharma and biotech companies can only reproduce between 11 and 25% high-impact research papers in the field of cancer research.
