Regional-scale modeling of reference evapotranspiration: Intercomparison of two simplified temperature- and radiation-based approaches

2015

Two regionalized models for the distributed estimation of daily reference evapotranspiration, the temperature-based Hargreaves (HE) and the radiation-based Makkink (MK) equations, are applied in Southern Italy during the years 2007 and 2008. Spatially distributed meteorological inputs, such as air temperature and incoming solar radiation, were derived from geostatistical interpolation of ground data and from the Land Surface Analysis Satellite Application Facility (LSA-SAF) surface radiation product, respectively. Comparison of the latter with 83,394 daily measurements provided by 128 weather stations shows a not negligible seasonal error in daily solar radiation that is corrected by means …

Study of the cwaRS-ldcA Operon Coding a Two-Component System and a Putative L,D-Carboxypeptidase in Lactobacillus paracasei

2020

International audience; The cell surface is the primary recognition site between the bacterium and the host. An operon of three genes, LSEI_0219 (cwaR), LSEI_0220 (cwaS), and LSEI_0221 (ldcA), has been previously identified as required for the establishment of Lactobacillus paracasei in the gut. The genes cwaR and cwaS encode a predicted two-component system (TCS) and ldcA a predicted D-alanyl-D-alanine carboxypeptidase which is a peptidoglycan (PG) biosynthesis enzyme. We explored the functionality and the physiological role of these three genes, particularly their impact on the bacterial cell wall architecture and on the bacterial adaptation to environmental perturbations in the gut. The …

Learning From Mistakes: The Role of Phages in Pandemics

2021

The misuse of antibiotics is leading to the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, and in the absence of available treatments, this has become a major global threat. In the middle of the recent severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, which has challenged the whole world, the emergence of MDR bacteria is increasing due to prophylactic administration of antibiotics to intensive care unit patients to prevent secondary bacterial infections. This is just an example underscoring the need to seek alternative treatments against MDR bacteria. To this end, phage therapy has been proposed as a promising tool. However, further research in the field is mandatory to assure…

Predicting Skin Permeability by Means of Computational Approaches: Reliability and Caveats in Pharmaceutical Studies

2019

The skin is the main barrier between the internal body environment and the external one. The characteristics of this barrier and its properties are able to modify and affect drug delivery and chemical toxicity parameters. Therefore, it is not surprising that permeability of many different compounds has been measured through several in vitro and in vivo techniques. Moreover, many different in silico approaches have been used to identify the correlation between the structure of the permeants and their permeability, to reproduce the skin behavior, and to predict the ability of specific chemicals to permeate this barrier. A significant number of issues, like interlaboratory variability, experim…

Instance-Based Multi-Label Classification via Multi-Target Distance Regression

2021

Interest in multi-target regression and multi-label classification techniques and their applications have been increasing lately. Here, we use the distance-based supervised method, minimal learning machine (MLM), as a base model for multi-label classification. We also propose and test a hybridization of unsupervised and supervised techniques, where prototype-based clustering is used to reduce both the training time and the overall model complexity. In computational experiments, competitive or improved quality of the obtained models compared to the state-of-the-art techniques was observed. peerReviewed

Comparison of different predictive models for nutrient estimation in a sequencing batch reactor for wastewater treatment

2006

Abstract In this paper different predictive models for nutrient estimation in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) for wastewater treatment are compared: principal component regression (PCR), partial least squares (PLS), and artificial neural networks (ANNs). Two unfolding procedures were used: batch-wise and variable-wise. For the latter unfolding method, X and Y matrix augmentation with lagged variables were used in some models to incorporate process dynamics. The results have shown that batch-wise unfolding PLS models outperform the other approaches. The ANN models are good predictive models, but in this particular case-study, they do not outperform those multivariate projection models that …

Individual patient risk stratification of high-risk neuroblastomas using a two-gene score suited for clinical use

2015

Several gene expression-based prognostic signatures have been described in neuroblastoma, but none have successfully been applied in the clinic. Here we have developed a clinically applicable prognostic gene signature, both with regards to number of genes and analysis platform. Importantly, it does not require comparison between patients and is applicable amongst high-risk patients. The signature is based on a two-gene score (R-score) with prognostic power in high-stage tumours (stage 4 and/or MYCN-amplified diagnosed after 18 months of age). QPCR-based and array-based analyses of matched cDNAs confirmed cross platform (array-qPCR) transferability. We also defined a fixed cut-off value iden…

Osteoradionecrosis and Antiresorptive Drug-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaws

2019

With similar clinical appearances, osteoradionecrosis and antiresorptive drug-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (ARONJ) are different side effects of treatment regimens of mostly malignant diseases. While radiotherapy is usually used to control the progress of locoregional tumors, antiresorptive agents are administered in patients with generalized catabolic bone diseases. Although surgical techniques to treat both diseases are comparable, it should be noted that the pathophysiology is different. For the different genesis of both entities, they are dealt with separately in the following chapter.
